Julianne Moore Movie Casts For Inbred, Albino & Deformed-Looking West Virginians

A movie about to be filmed in Pittsburgh is casting Gothic characters -- including an albino-like girl and deformed people -- to depict West Virginia mountain people.

"'Regular-looking" children need not apply.

That's the gist of an open casting call for paid extras for "Shelter," a horror film starring Julianne Moore that will begin shooting in Pittsburgh in March.

The casting call scheduled for Sunday invites "men and women of all races, 18 or older," to try out as extras, according to the announcement from Downtown-based Donna Belajac Casting. But the extras wanted for the West Virginia scenes evoke images of "Deliverance" and "The Hills Have Eyes."

"It's the way it was described in the script," Belajac said Monday. "Some of these 'holler' people -- because they are insular and clannish, and they don't leave their area -- there is literally inbreeding, and the people there often have a different kind of look. That's what we're trying to get."

The announcement -- which was sent out in a news release and posted on the casting company's Web site -- asked for people with the following attributes:

"Extraordinarily tall or short. Unusual body shapes, even physical abnormalities as long as there is normal mobility. Unusual facial features, especially eyes."

The announcement requests "a 9-12-year-old Caucasian girl with an other-worldly look to her."

"Could be an albino or something along those lines -- she's someone who is visually different and therefore has a closer contact to the gods and to magic. 'Regular-looking' children should not attend this open call.'"

I'm from that Scots failed-Jacobite uprising stock my father's side, and it was inbred and I'm paying for it with genetic damage. but I look perfectly normal except for the red hair. I never lived in the South as my inbred relatives came here in the late l9th century, to Chicago and Oregon.

As a life long West Virginian I never get tired of reminding folk that Deliverance was filmed in Georgia and South Carolina. Not West Virginia.
And still, I don't think of banjo music when I meet someone from either of those states.

well put....as an nc mountaineer, the banjo is a big part of my identity, and i'm proud of my heritage. One banjo and one fiddle constitutes a string band in my opinion and both require a very high aptitude (and a LOT of patience) to play together. I know very few inbreds, and they're just the republicans ;).

Puh--leeze there are inbred people all over. I take umbrage to the notion that it's only Appalachia or backwoods southern areas that this occurs. There was a town in Maine the government broke up that was totally inbred. Shame on Hollywoopd for promulgating ths stereotype some people have of us southerners.

Hey, I live in WV. Trust me - it's all true. I've been here 8 years and never seen so many cases of incest on the news. And those are just the ones that get caught. Many of them look more normal than in the past and a few even speak well, but underneath... yikes.

speaking as a native of NC, i've never seen any "inbreds" in that area but have seen them in places like Missouri. however, you can find plenty of people who start rumors of other Carolinians of being inbred. it's very fashionable gossip among the snob class of blue bloods from the region. i guess they hate feeling left-out.
