A movie about to be filmed in Pittsburgh is casting Gothic characters -- including an albino-like girl and deformed people -- to depict West Virginia mountain people.

"'Regular-looking" children need not apply.

That's the gist of an open casting call for paid extras for "Shelter," a horror film starring Julianne Moore that will begin shooting in Pittsburgh in March.

The casting call scheduled for Sunday invites "men and women of all races, 18 or older," to try out as extras, according to the announcement from Downtown-based Donna Belajac Casting. But the extras wanted for the West Virginia scenes evoke images of "Deliverance" and "The Hills Have Eyes."

"It's the way it was described in the script," Belajac said Monday. "Some of these 'holler' people -- because they are insular and clannish, and they don't leave their area -- there is literally inbreeding, and the people there often have a different kind of look. That's what we're trying to get."

...

The announcement -- which was sent out in a news release and posted on the casting company's Web site -- asked for people with the following attributes:

"Extraordinarily tall or short. Unusual body shapes, even physical abnormalities as long as there is normal mobility. Unusual facial features, especially eyes."

The announcement requests "a 9-12-year-old Caucasian girl with an other-worldly look to her."

"Could be an albino or something along those lines -- she's someone who is visually different and therefore has a closer contact to the gods and to magic. 'Regular-looking' children should not attend this open call.'"

That's disgusting. Could they get away with any other lurid stereotype like that in this country? No way, the PC people would be all over them. Can they quote studies or statistics about this supposed inbreeding, or is it just popular fallacy? I hope this movie bombs.

Lol It is known that the vertical family tree is most common in the religious zealot environment, it explains the serious lack of intelligence too.

I must have lived in the wrong WV years ago, since people there were like.... regular people. But then again you shouldn't let the facts get in the way.

I think a lot of these people need to stop and realize that bigotry comes in all forms. It doesn't have to be racial. I'm so sick of listening to idiots spewing bigotry towards white Southerners. Hey yeah we do have some inbreeding around in Appalachia. That doesn't make us any dumber than a bunch of bigots who think they're better than everybody else. Aren't you the same bunch who go on and on about tolerance? But for some reason it's okay to spew about how ignorant white Southerners are. Go figure!

Swinton, I presume, as I don't know any other Tildas. She definitely nailed exactly that role in Broken Flowers with Bill Murray.

My family has been in Appalachia since before the Revolutionary War. We are not inbred or unusual looking unless, in my case, you consider extremely handsome to be odd.

We also hold the body count record for the clan feuds that sometimes took place there. I think of that as post-natal abortion. Sounds to me that some of these sum bi*ches should never have been born.

They need to be looking in North Carolina. More reported cases of incest there than any where in the United States. Not to mention most of the people from North Carolina are descendants of West Virginians. Loads of people migrated south when the Mason-Dixon line was drawn.

I question your assertion that "most" of the people in NC were W. Virginians. Look at colonial history, there were many migrants from Virginia; Scots who came after the failed Jacobite rebellion in Scotland; German enclaves; and shipwrecked sailors, often English, along the coast. When the Mason Dixon line was drawn, W. VA. was still part of Virginia. Anyone who moved south from that line would just end up in Virginia. And why would they? It had nothing to do with the Civil War, it was laid out decades earlier.
