Army Chief Of Staff General George Casey:

Army Chief Of Staff General George Casey: "No Reason To Doubt" Obama On Troop Shortages

After the Pentagon denied Barack Obama's account of military shortages in Afghanistan, Army Chief of Staff General George Casey said, "I have no reason to doubt" the Senator.

During last week's Texas Democratic debate Senator Obama said:

"You know, I've heard from an Army captain who was the head of a rifle platoon -- supposed to have 39 men in a rifle platoon. Ended up being sent to Afghanistan with 24 because 15 of those soldiers had been sent to Iraq," Obama told CNN moderator Campbell Brown.

"And as a consequence, they didn't have enough ammunition, they didn't have enough Humvees. They were actually capturing Taliban weapons, because it was easier to get Taliban weapons than it was for them to get properly equipped by our current commander in chief," he added.

General George Casey backed up Senator Obama while testifying Tuesday in front of the Senate Armed Services Committee.

"I have no reason to doubt what it is the captain said," Casey said. "This was 2003 and 2004, almost four and a half years ago. We acknowledge and all worked together to correct the deficiencies that we saw in that period, not only in Afghanistan but in Iraq. It was a period that we worked our way through."

It's amazing that anyone would even doubt Obama's remarks at all, given all the outrage about ill-trained and poorly-equipped troops headed off to the surge last year.

Everything Obama said was also being related by journalists to be the reality of the situation, as far as readiness issues were concerned.

And with all the recent flap about MRAPS delays, Obama is, as always, ahead of the argument. He's proving his judgment to be solid and sound, once again.

The Bush malfeasance is wide spread but this takes the prize for stupidity and malfeasance. But they ahve also ruined our country in MANY ways. They have run a surplus economy into the ground with debt as far as the eye can see, they lied about WHY we went to war, they mismanaged Afghanistan that we had some small reason to fight since Bin Laden was there. However, the entire Bush administration is littered with one disaster after another. Sickening results to our prestige, to our economy and to the American soul. He will go down in history as the very worst President we have ever had. His legacy is un-fixable except by a few misguided neo-cons (mostly cons)who jump to his every word and lie reflexively. Come quickly next election and save us from this oaf.

FISA UPDATE!

Not much to report, actually, except that the House has not caved, and the WH is using every fear tactic that they can come up with. An interesting read over at DailyKos:

http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/2/27/144117/624/646/465142

Do monitor developments at Kos, FireDogLake, and especially Glenn Greenwald at Salon.

In the meantime, letters and calls to Pelosi, Conyers and your own congressman would be worth the effort. Do not mail letters to Capitol Hill, as everything is delayed with Anthrax scans. Mail to their district offices.

Also at Kos an article about House Dems being targeted based on their refusal to bow to Telecom immunity¦They deserve a call if you can find the time. And an honorary $25 to one or two of them would be a nice gesture.

Please take action.

Yes bribes usually work for the Democrats, their freezers are full.

Very interesting piece by David Ignatias. It seems that the anti-war movement was right all along. The real Al Qaeda threat is growing because of the war in Iraq is the duh part. But importantly the fight against Islamic Extremism is far less the "transformational challenge of the 21st century" McCrazy and Bush would have you believe.

What I would like to see is Obama (Barack Hussein Obama) look staright at J. Sydney McCain and say,

"McBomb, with all your military expertise, you were wrong about this fucking war in Iraq, and I was right. So, go fuck yourself".

It would be enormously fun to watch. I'd love to see that, also.

But Obama isn't anything like his rude, crude, murderous, profiteering, fascist distant cousin Cheney.

Chomsky is correct. If we think about our own nation, those men (and women) we celebrate every July 4th were considered by the Brits to be traitors, revolutionaries.
If Iraq had invaded the US, wouldn't have you been out there fighting for your country?

It depends, if our country was run by a ruthless dictator who was ruthlessly killing and torturing civilians and using chemical weapons on his own people and they invaded to take him out and free our Country for the people, then yes I would be fighting for my Country right alongside the Iraqiis.

Perhaps part of the problem was that Obama, in relating the anecdote, 1) made it sound like a direct conversation with the captain, and then later it might have been secondhand or thirdhand information, 2) made it sound like a current situation, and 3) made it sound like he didn't know that platoons are led by lieutenants, not captains (who command companies), maybe dimishing his C-in-C potential.

That's funny, my platoon in Viet Nam was run by my platoon SERGEANT. In light of that little mistake on your part, I'm wondering how you would fare as a C-in-C.

Hell, Bush can't name any of his wingmen and he had plenty of C-in-C potential.

Bush Sr. tried to tell the VFW that Pearl Harbor Day was September 7th despite being a veteran of the Navy in WWII, and he had plenty of C-in-C potential.

Perhaps we should amend the constitution to specify that all applicants should be well-versed in small unit tactics and be able to define the difference between bounding overwatch and travelling overwatch.

Or maybe you should just get your head out of your nethers.

Thank you, Mr. High Road. Where's the bunk? It seems like a straightforward observation is enough to set Obama's supporters off. If you're such a big Obama supporter, why don't you push yourself away from that computer and go down and register as a Democrat. Your first choice was Kucinich, a nonviable candidate if there ever was one.

The guy WAS a lieutenant at the time. Obama did not "make it sound like" your made up interpretation. All you're trying to do is find fault where none exists.

Does Senator Obama have any news from Afghanistan that's current? Seems he's four years behind the times.

This is yet another misleading headline headline from HuffPo. This is lame. You're counting on the fact that no one reads past the headline. I smell desperation.

The 28th Infantry Division Band distinguished itself during WWII. During the Battle of the Bulge, the divisional command post at Wiltz, Luxembourg, came under severe attack. Members of the 28th Infantry Division Band took up arms and fought as part of holding line around Wiltz to stop the German advance. The band put away their instruments, dug foxholes and picked up carbines. A clarinetist, Private First Class Collins, manned a bazooka and then drove a truck loaded with the band's music. He was going to save the music, but 10 miles out of Bastogne the convoy was ambushed and all the music burned. Only 16 of the band's 60 men survived the fighting in the Ardennes.

This is a bunch of crap. Let's stay on issue! This is about a Mccain saying Obama don't know anything about the war. When a top officer That is in that Area of exspatese says Obama is right on. Mccain seems to think this war will be over and done, we'll win by staying there months after HE takes charge of the white house-----------------and I call him a lunatic. He hates Cuba, and he's bitter toward other Nations. He has little control over his temper and stood in the senate house calling other senators Who didn't agreee with him filthy dirty names. You don't think they won't remember that, and do all they can to show him up every chance they have. This man don't have the temperment to be President of the United State's.
