For weeks, the Barack Obama campaign has warned that Hillary Clinton would try to use her ties to the Democratic establishment to muscle 'super delegates' into backing her presidential bid, overriding a popular vote majority and Obama's plurality of pledged delegates elected in primaries and caucuses.

Now, however, as Obama has gained steadily in the polls, the Clinton campaign has reversed field. Top Clinton aides are pleading with uncommitted super delegates to hold off making any commitments, fearful that any commitments they make would be to back Obama, not Clinton.

A set of talking points emailed to Clinton supporters within organized labor describes the arguments to use on uncommitted super delegates. In the email, the Clinton campaign suggests telling the uncommitted delegates that "it would be unfair and unjust to cut off the nominating process now. There might come a time when the process needs to come to a close, but that time is not now."

In language that could have been lifted from the Obama playbook just a few weeks ago, the email says Clinton backers should make the case to super delegates that: "If House, Senate and DNC members try to end this process now, it would be very damaging to those institutions, the Democratic Party and our chances in November."

The entire DNC, members of Congress, governors, labor leaders and other key interest group leaders make up the 842 "automatic" or "super" delegates to the convention who are free to cast ballots for the candidate of their choice, regardless of how their state voted. To win, a Democratic candidate must have the support of at least 2025 delegates out of a total of 4048; 20.8 percent of the delegates are super delegates.

Just over three weeks ago, on February 6, Obama was the one warning that the super delegates might side with Clinton, even though he was ahead in the popular vote and in the pledged delegate count:

"If this contest comes down to superdelegates, we are going to be able to say we have more pledged delegates, which means the Democratic voters have spoken. . . . The argument we would be making to superdelegates is, if we come into the convention with more pledged delegates then I think we can make a very strong argument that our constituencies have spoken and I think that's going to be pretty important when it comes to the general election."

Clinton and her aides, three weeks ago, were, in turn, adamant in defending their efforts to persuade super delegates to endorse the New York Senator.

On February 16, Clinton told reporters that super delegates have "first-hand knowledge of the candidates" and "if people want to go after delegates in places that I've won who are supporting somebody else, what's good for the goose is good for the gander." At the time, Clinton had a substantial lead among super delegates. One estimate on February 8 gave her a 213 to 142, a 71 vote advantage.

More recently, however, the trend among super delegates making endorsements has been decidedly in Obama's favor; he has picked up the support of 35, including three who switched from Clinton. The Clinton campaign did not respond to queries as to how many super delegate endorsements she has picked up in recent weeks. The most recent super delegate count on RealClearPolitics shows her lead among super delegates dropping to 59, 241-182.

The count among pledged delegates chosen through primaries and caucuses is 1193 for Obama and 1038 for Clinton, or a 155 vote in favor of the Illinois Senator. Obama has so far won a total of 10,305,403 votes, according to RealClearPolitics, to Clinton's 9,379,822, a difference of 925,581 votes.

In the Clinton campaign's talking points email, Clinton supporters were told to argue that "late momentum in the primary may be an important factor impacting the perception of a candidate's strength going into the general election. If, as we expect, Hillary Clinton wins Ohio, Texas and Pennsylvania, the current dynamics of this race will shift dramatically."

mrs clinton-please follow these three simple steps

1-proceed to xerox machine
2-xerox tax return
3-distribute tax return

"I'm working on it" is so lame---just make a copy & publish it-
it's 2008---
"I'm working on it does NOT work"

Obama 08-yes we can (release our tax returns)

I've done mine..however, I am sure that the Clintons have a slightly LARGER return than mine. But hey, they have an accountant that could be working on this for them..she says's she's so busy, she can hardly sleep. Well, one word from her and her accountants can do whatever needs to be done...she can release 2007 returns no problem. Sheesh, as if she's the one who will have to log onto HRBLOCK.com and pull them up and copy them herself..who is she kidding~!

Are there pro-choice Catholics? Are there pro-Palestinian-state Jews?

Faith is just that. The alliances between members and each other or the clergy or doctrine are not based on reason. If you compare this to members of other churches, it is easy to imagine members who do not agree with every view of their pastor, the religious community to which they belong, and/or church doctrine...

Idiotic. Obama receiving campaign funds from Rezko during his Illinois senate race does not mean that Obama is complicit in Rezko's wrong doing.

Don't you think the Clinton campaign was all over that. The Chicago Tribune has debunked HRCs claim that Rezko was a slumlord and that Obama had any complicity in his indictment charges.

Clinton supporters seem to jump on any of her campaign rhetoric and think by repeating it over and over that they are helping her "projection." I suppose you can dismiss and ignore Hsu.

Hillary now claims that she does not support NAFTA. She certainly used NAFTA in her considerable efforts to push American tech jobs to India corporations, in return for considerable contributions to Hillary and Bill.
The Senate India Caucus has at least twenty-five members; why is Hillary Rodham Clinton the only one with a building named after her in the punjab region of India.

The media has conveniently steered clear of this subject.

The Rezkos stuff is all bogus. The house purchase claim also doesn't hold water. You can bet Obama wishes he never met the guy, but it's pretty clear Obama wasn't involved in any wrongdoing.

I feel certain that the main thing we want this time is a return to LEGAL elections, where the people cast the votes and the delegates vote the will of the people. We don't want Bush's Supreme Court to tell us that the election is over and the Republicans won, nor do we want anything similar from the superdelegates!

You have got to admit that since childhood we are taught Lady's first. Even as my Wife and I are walking on a public sidewalk I take the roadside of the walk as if I am suppose to be struck by the drunk driver before her. Its just

I know. She's always been the first one out on stage (lady's first). She's always been the first one to stand up (lady's first). Someone always gets her chair for her (common courtesy). It's a stupid complaint and frankly, I always assumed she got first question out of politeness. Besides, if you go first doesn't that mean that you can score first too??? Look at the earlier debates, she always got to speak longer.

I believe the custom actually derived from the times people used to empty their chamber pots from upper floors to the gutter. As someone who was around back then, we could ask John McCain about that...

She was asked the first question in 6 of the last 10 debates. Is that really a sign of a conspiracy?

Typically, getting the first, most visible opportunity to speak is considered a plus.

Odd for her to complain, all the while saying "I don't mind..."

Last, many of the questions pitched to the candidates are directed at them specifically...

Let's hope that the nomination is decided on the voice of the people, and not by a handful of superdelgates.

We all agree that this election should be about unity, progress, and change--something the nation has lacked for this past 7 years. We should carry this message of unity into the general election.

Obama is a man of substance and conviction. Merely the fact that we would nominate and elect such a man after the past 8 years cannot fail to have positive effects on a world made cynical and disillusioned by the choices and acts of the Administration during that period.

The enthusiasm we see at rallies is more than ephemeral excitement. For many, Obama represents the desire for a transformation towards a politics grounded in truth, genuine compassion, and substantive efforts to benefit the many, rather than the few.

If you haven't been to a rally, or have, and want to take it with you, you can get the entire Obama rally setlist--all the way from U2's "City of Blinding Lights", to which Obama takes the stage, to the Obama victory anthem "Signed, Sealed, Delivered" at ITunes, here:

HILLARY CLINTON clearly won the debate last night. You know this because MSNBC and other networks are not covering it - and they are criticizing his "me too" responses and weak positions from Barack. Clearly she "won."

What are you talking about.... They said she won last night. From Buchanan to drool boy to Olbermann they all gave the debate to her

She won the first half
The second half was even

That "me too" shit goes both ways OK. You should be thankful that Obama isn't attacking her like she is him. He's in the lead and doesn't need to attack her. She's losing and she's gone berzerk to do anything to get at him, from feigned outrage to citing Comedy shows (hmmm. maybe my dick in a box is a good present).

It took her til last night to clarify her position on NAFTA while his has been clear for months
Where are her tax records? Did she lose them or is she scrubbing them for nefarious income sources?
Where are the white house records?

As far as experience goes, yes she's interacted with the government longer, but he's interacted with actual constituents and community organizations for much longer. His first gov't job was as a community organizer. Obama is a politician of his constituents while she's a politician of D.C. (just look at the bills she's sponsored).

I think both of their healthcare plans are adequate except that he's not the one in bed with the Insurance industry.

We need an intervention for Hillary. A majority of the super delegates should unify and press Hillary to stand down for the good of America and the good of the Democratic party. No more debates and no "soldiering on". The people have spoken. If she does not win by a very large majority in TX and OH, she needs to end her campaign immediately and allow the Democrats to get on with the business of dealing with McCain. It's uncomfortable to see similarities between Hillary and Bush: she won't admit mistakes (Iraq war vote, Iranian Republican Guard vote), she doesn't have the wisdom to surround herself by competent staff (her campaign strategists should have been fired long ago), she takes her supporters for granted in the same way Bush and the Republican party do ("the inevitable candidate", targeting primarily large already democratic states while ignoring the smaller one). It's time to end the agony now.

The debates should over without a doubt. There is a whole campaign with the Repubs that has to be won and the candidates including Obama have been worn out with what has been asked of them. That's one way to defeat the Dems - but wait, Hillary is one. Hmmm. Win at all costs even the cost of having her party lose? Stop this insanity. Time to finish this race and have Hill go home to NY while Obama recoups and goes forward with hopefully a bit of rest somewhere to put the glow back. He needs to be fresher against the Mac - don't want the 74 year old looking livelier than the 46 year old!
