GOP Strategist: Obama Needs To 'Address' His Middle Name

Fallout from Randy Cunningham's insinuative invocation of Barack Obama's middle name at a McCain event continues to percolate, even in the wake of a forthright and creditable apology from John McCain himself. In the immediate aftermath, McCain made it clear that any such commentary that was "disparaging to the integrity, character [or] honesty of either Sen. Obama or Sen. Clinton was wrong." That response only earned him enmity from conservative commentators, including Cunningham himself, who, feeling slighted, vowed to back Hillary Clinton.

This was the backdrop for a discussion of the matter on MSNBC. Republican analyst Cheri Jacobus, initially stuck up for McCain, noting that the candidate was not on hand during Cunningham's remarks and adding that she thought that "[it was] nice that he apologized."

From there, however, the discussion went right off the rails, with Jacobus accusing the Obama campaign of being "thin-skinned" (this despite the fact that the Obama campaign's reaction was simply to offer their thanks to McCain - Bill Burton stated yesterday "It is a sign that if there is a McCain-Obama general election, it can be intensely competitive but the candidates will attempt to keep it respectful and focused on issues."). From there, Jacobus only got several degrees more ridiculous, insisting, "[Obama] has this middle name. Why doesn't he address it and get it out of the way?"

But what's to address? His parents gave him a middle name back in 1961, which, decades later, coincidentally ended up being the same as the last name of a dictator with whom the United States went to war. Is Jacobus suggesting there was some sort of secret plan hatched by Obama's psychic parents forty-seven years ago to provide a minor stumbling block to his presidential ambitions? And hey, Saddam Hussein was a U.S. ally as recently as 1983 - does this mean, for twenty or so years, Obama was the type of person that Donald Rumsfeld would shake hands with?

Here's the stooopid part I don't get. What's the problem with Hussain anyway? Since Saddam Hussain DID NOT cause 9/11, DID NOT invade the US and POSED NO THREAT to the US, I don't see why this is an issue.

King Hussein of Jordan was a strong U.S. ally for many years.

That's right, and that's what any normal person with a fully functioning cerebral cortex would get.
However, this nonsense isn't aimed at the likes of you and me - it's aimed squarely at the folks who don't think for themselves, those who speak in sound bites "cuz that's what ah heard on the tee vee". Those that will vote Republican even as their house is being foreclosed and wonder how they will pay for their medication or their kids' college. That's the audience - keep 'em dumb and scared - and we'll protect you from those people with scary names like Hussein. I'm not sure what bothers me the most - the casual racism or the drooling ignorance on display for all to see. I guess it's both.
How about Bruce - you like Bruce? Go check out which *hole's middle name is Bruce, then come back here talking about Hussein.

How does one "address" a middle name? Did he have input concerning it? I have a middle name and sometimes I am compelled (usually) to use it in some way; if I use it typically it's just the first letter. I'm not a big fan of it. Heck, I'm not thrilled about my first name either and for yrs couldn't stand it. Found out I despised the middle name more. I was stuck.

Only thing in favor on the side of my first name was that it was less crappy than the other first names my mother considered.

What's Obama supposed to do here? Apologize for his name? Sheesh.

Hell, I would be happy if Obama WAS Muslim. It might give him an insight into that part of the world every other politician seems to be lacking.

Of course he isn't, he is a good Christian, but I hope and pray he does have the insight.

The purpose of the government (specifically the Republican branch) is to keep the masses stupid. That is the only way to control the people. Tell them only what you want them to know and think. D. Eisenhower was shocked to learn the average American I.Q. was not what he thought. I'm not shocked. I read the blogs.

And now, in 2008, We have to add a new and embarrassing slogan to the history of our great country: Non-european names need not apply.

I have a friend that I grew up with whose middle name is Adolf (no joke, seriously). I've always thought that he owed me an explanation for that and now I feel justified (that part is a joke).

The only thing that is clear when people try to make something of Barack's middle name, is that the intelligence level of those making the claim is low.

Honey, it's not just his middle name. So do you have a Barrack Hussein Obama bumper sticker posted on your car?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:05 AM on 02/28/2008

One question, if the Obama camp didn't think using Barrack's middle is an issue. Why haven't we seen it on advertisments? Do you see anyone driving around with a "Barrack Hussein Obama" for President bumper stickers? There is something really wrong with all of this. It is like he just came out of nowhere. I have a very uneasy feeling about this man. He seems to have cast a spell on alot of people. He delivers the phrase "Change" well if he gets elected there really will be a change. All politicans spew words that we all want to hear. And when some get into office, their words seem to fade away. I just how that those of you who support Barrack Hussein Obama, really look into who he is and who he has associated with. I am a registered Gay Republican who doesn't like McCann and is leaning towards Hillary since Edwards dropped out. .... a name is a name is a name

To xenite69...
You don't get to pick your own name, your parents do. There is nothing wrong with the name Hussein, it is a popular name where Obama's father came from. I believe it means "beautiful child" or something to that effect. People who are xenophobic or racist will pick at anything, including a name, to discriminate against someone that they hate because of race or ethnicity. Cunningham's point was to incite the haters and the bigots, and those with low IQ, nothing else.

Last time I checked, it is common for any of the candidates to have their middle name on a bumper sticker............I don't even know what Hillary Clinton's middle name is. Do I care? No. It isn't important! As for his supporters, I am an Obama supporter. I have looked up his record on the library of congress (which by the way, he has accomplished alot in a short time), I have read his book about his life written way before he was running for President, and I generally do a fact check on all of his policies and read them in detail. I am getting tired of everyone assuming Obama supporters just follow along mindlessly and don't do any research. I have and so has everyone Obama supporter I know.............the research is why I'm supporting him! Enough with the fear tactics, this is not what America is about. Also, please stop being so horrible within the Democratic party...........I don't like the way Hillary Clinton has run her campaign, but I intend do back the Democratic nominee.........other Democrats should do the same. All this bickering is not good for the party.

Actually it is not common for candidates to have their middle name on a bumper sticker. The reason Hillary always uses her middle name is probably because her last name was acquired through marriage, and I think when she was first married she never changed her last name until it became an issue in Arkansas. I have a John Kerry bumper sticker with no middle name. Same for Ned Lamont, etc. The only people who want to make this an issue are the ones seeking to divide us. The xenophobics/racists will use anything they can to divide and conquer, but it is up to us to make sure they do not succeed.

I don't regularly use my middle name, why would I start? If he hasn't used it all his life, Why should start now? Hussein was his grandfathers name and passing it on to him is no different than those with William as their middle name. Man buddy - you sound so paranoid? Funny, you can support someone like bush but are this paranoid about Barack Obama? Unreal.

It begins.

The "same old, politics as usual, smoke & mirrors" nonsense, or as Senator Obama called it, "the silly season".

In the last 7+ years, this type of commentary has been pivitol on having Americans take their eyes off the ball/objective and allowed the current administration to make chop suey of the Constitution and the economy of this great country.

There is another portion of this type of 'silliness' that DOES merit complete attention, though.

That it is ''crazies'' who commit ''hate crimes'' and this continual assault from a part of the Republican base - the Tennesee GOP's statement, as well as radio talk show host Cunningham AND this GOP commentator can be seen as stirring up that type of frenzy or hate in those who are already overflowing with anger and frustration and have no 'TRUE' place to vent it.

IT IS DANGEROUS and DOES NOTHING to address this nation's daunting challenges.

If the GOP carries on that tact, I believe and pray that the backlash from any decent American ~ REGARDLESS of any political party affiliation should and will be tremendous.

Stirring up ''hate''; all too often can lead to ''hate crimes''.

GOP, continue at your own & Senator Obama''s peril!

IT IS HIS NAME! Get over it. People who would be swayed by the "H" word in his name are not people who would vote for him even if his name were Barack John Obama. His supporters and the media are to blame for his name being made an issue. It doesn't MATTER what his middle name is and for his supporters to object to the use of that middle name shows that it bothers them as much as it does the people who won't be voting for him because of it.

I don't think he needs to "address" it, but I think his supporters and the news media need to address why the hell it bugs them so much. I am not an Obama supporter (don't attack, I just don't think he has enough foreign policy experience at a time when it is EXTREMELY necessary that he have it), but it sure as heck isn't because of his freaking name.

Anyone running for office should be an open book. The real issue is why are the liberals (McCain included) trying to hide his real name and jump all over anyone who uses it. "Barack Hussein Obama for president" has a nice ring to it.

Why aren't we using ALL the candidates middle names, then?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:18 AM on 02/28/2008

But if he hasn't used his middle name his entire life, why should he start now? So mental midgits can snicker when they say it like school boys? Which is what they're doing now. I say grow up to those that see this as an issue.

Keith Obermann last night reported that Randy Cunningham was hired by John McCain's campaign to speak at this event, to draw red meat against Obama, to stir the brew. McCain says he never met the man but he did meet him before. Why does Obama have to address his Middle Name? Who cares?

Senator Barack Obama as a born-again CHRISTIAN should drop his Islamic middle name.

Arab Muslims don't like anyone from an Islamic background turning to Christianity.
In fact, Muslims don't like Barack Obama.

Please, don't drop the names of African American Muslims supporting Barack Obama, because African American Muslims are not accepted as real Muslims in the Islamic world, because most of them only became Muslims out of spite for the racist White American Christians.

I am beginning to feel sorry for Barack Obama.

Wow - where to begin with your sweeping generalizations?! Nice to know someone is representing ALL Arab Muslims, AND African American Muslims. You must be incredibly busy to be in constant contact with so many millions!
