GOP Strategist: Obama Needs To 'Address' His Middle Name

Fallout from Randy Cunningham's insinuative invocation of Barack Obama's middle name at a McCain event continues to percolate, even in the wake of a forthright and creditable apology from John McCain himself. In the immediate aftermath, McCain made it clear that any such commentary that was "disparaging to the integrity, character [or] honesty of either Sen. Obama or Sen. Clinton was wrong." That response only earned him enmity from conservative commentators, including Cunningham himself, who, feeling slighted, vowed to back Hillary Clinton.

This was the backdrop for a discussion of the matter on MSNBC. Republican analyst Cheri Jacobus, initially stuck up for McCain, noting that the candidate was not on hand during Cunningham's remarks and adding that she thought that "[it was] nice that he apologized."

From there, however, the discussion went right off the rails, with Jacobus accusing the Obama campaign of being "thin-skinned" (this despite the fact that the Obama campaign's reaction was simply to offer their thanks to McCain - Bill Burton stated yesterday "It is a sign that if there is a McCain-Obama general election, it can be intensely competitive but the candidates will attempt to keep it respectful and focused on issues."). From there, Jacobus only got several degrees more ridiculous, insisting, "[Obama] has this middle name. Why doesn't he address it and get it out of the way?"

But what's to address? His parents gave him a middle name back in 1961, which, decades later, coincidentally ended up being the same as the last name of a dictator with whom the United States went to war. Is Jacobus suggesting there was some sort of secret plan hatched by Obama's psychic parents forty-seven years ago to provide a minor stumbling block to his presidential ambitions? And hey, Saddam Hussein was a U.S. ally as recently as 1983 - does this mean, for twenty or so years, Obama was the type of person that Donald Rumsfeld would shake hands with?

Senator Barack Obama as a born-again CHRISTIAN should drop his Islamic middle name.

Arab Muslims don't like anyone from an Islamic background turning to Christianity.
In fact, Muslims don't like Barack Obama.

Please, don't drop the names of African American Muslims supporting Barack Obama, because African American Muslims are not accepted as real Muslims in the Islamic world, because most of them only became Muslims out of spite for the racist White American Christians.

I am beginning to feel sorry for Barack Obama.

Sen. Obama is a member of the United Church of Christ - which is not an evangelical church nor does it advocate being 'born again'.

I grew up in the UCC and trust me - most born again Christians I know would find it far too liberal to even call Christian.

When did all the adults leave the Republican party? I expect childish behavior from some in the left, but conservatives are supposed to be the mature ones. I guess if you can't stand on the issues, you can only resort to name calling.

I never liked people from any background or position using cheap shots like in this case,
Obama's middle name. I don't care what his middle name is. Now having said that, I am not inclined to have Obama as President. It's not that he does not sound good, but I can see a REAL problem with his inexperience. I checked on how he had been voting, and there are some real concerns with that. He also can't explain how he thinks he is more experienced the Hillary. Sorry folks, but I do want to see more substance in this situation. I am not willing to go for someone who does not have it. Not now, we have too much at stake here. He also does tend to ride on Hillary's coat tails, both on the debates and in his campaign. It's hard for me to get behind seeing that, with my observations. It's not inexperience by me that I see this. I am very observent of each candidate. Hillary is more apt in operational position, Obama is good for Marketing.

The likes of Jacobus and MSm like CNN, CBS, FOX and others still think we are in the 1990s when they used to spin and feed us rubbish packaged as news of informed analysis. This Youtube, Blackberry, cellphone era, they look ever more ridiculous as more and more Americans debunk their antiquated thinking. Someone should stop paying them to spew such nonsense.

THIS JUST IN....

Presidential Candidate Senator McCain has been discovered to have the same first name as that of the man who SHOT RONALD REAGAN!

Further research has revealed that he also has the same first name as the man who SHOT ABRAHAM LINCOLN!

This name was also that of one of the most hated rulers of a country that was behind attacks upon this country that resulted in the burning of the White House in Washington DC!*

McCain has this first name. There's no denying it -- why doesn't he address this issue and get it out of the way?

Ha—good point!

We should also note that our current president has the same first name as the oppressive tyrant whose abuses led our forefathers to declare independence.

When I was younger, the world had this great leader, King Hussein of Jordan - handsome and married to a wonderfully beautiful woman from the western world. His name was a joy in those days, and an example of what a future Middle East region could be like.

the general election will truly be a fight between the past and the future...although McCain is in a unique situation in that he accepts and rejects bits and pieces of the hard right platform

I could NEVER vote for Obama, I made the mistake of voting for JIMMY CARTER and learned my lesson. Carter was so weak and ineffective it ended up destroying the DEMOCRATIC PARTY for years.

The fact that Obama retained his middle name tells that he is not shying away from making the people know about it. Even if it indicates that he is Islamic origin, He states that he is Christian and so by practice. In America where the religion of the presidential candidate should not count, the sentiments being expressed on either side do not indicate that. It is good that Mccain is trying to put it in the bottle. So should Obama's camp. In other words Obama's camp should not worry about anybody calling Obama by his full name.

Obama, why did you allow your parents to give you your name?

Shame on you, Barack Hussein Obama. You should have rejected and denounced this name before you were born.

LOL

I'm really sorry I somehow posted that three times. My screen was weird and all I did was hit "refresh."

Maybe it's a rightwing smear to make me look dumb because they don't like my middle name. Bigots.

from my blog

Addressing the issue of my middle name:

Some Republican operatives are insisting that Barack Hussein Obama needs to "address" the "issue" of his middle name.

Furthermore, during last night's presidential debate, Hillary Clinton insisted that Barack Obama's denunciation of Louis Farakhan was insufficient, demanding that he "reject" Farakhan as well as "denounce" him - which Obama did.

As a supporter of Barack Hussein Obama's, I feel it's only fair that I offer the same disclosure expected of my candidate.

And so, in the interest of full disclosure, I need to say, right here on my blog, that, yes, my middle name is indeed "Kaye." I don't know if my parents were trying to prove what intellectuals they were by spelling out a letter of the alphabet or what. I do know that they were ordinary New Orleanians, stationed in Alabama at the time of my birth, so maybe they were trying to get a little too fancy-schmanzy with that spelling, stretching a humble single letter into four. Or maybe they were trying to show pride in the culture of that particular time and place with their choice of such a strange, bland, monosyllabic, apparently Anglophylic name. Please be assured that had I been consulted about the issue at the time - and had I been lingual - I might have lobbied for a different choice. This election, however, needs to be not about the the desires of the parents of a newborn over forty years ago, but rather about the dreams and futures of the American people. I had hoped that at long last we were at a point in American history where we could be judged not by the letters filled in on our birth certificates but by the content of our character. Alas, our time may not yet have come.

Also, I am hearing rumblings about my middle name reminding some observers of Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson. Although we share a name, a mere one letter apart just like Osama and Obama, I hereby denounce and reject her Republican policies. I also denounce and reject the religiosity of the Mary Kay cosmetics company.

If I have left out any other "Kayes" whose values do not reflect those espoused on this blog, please let me know. I will denounce them and then, if that still isn't enough, I am even willing to reject them.

Finally, I'm sure there have been at least a few people over the years who wanted to be my friend but who I thought were creepy, just as Senator Obama apparently feels about Louis Farakhan. I would confess their names if only I could remember them, but the truth is that I just didn't realize I would someday be responsible for them. If anyone has any dirt on me regarding creepy would-be friends I've rejected, let me know and I will be happy to denounce them and their beliefs. If that isn't enough, I will even reject them.

Thank you for your continuing support. I look forward to further serving you this important election season.

I would like here and now to acknowledge my middle name, which is "Mariama." It's a Liberian name of Arabic origin, and is related to "Miriam," and, of course, to "Mary."

Whew! I feel much better now! Now may I vote for Barack (first name is Luo, probably coming from a word similar to the Swahili "baraka," which means "blessing," and, of course, if you go back through the centuries to Arabic trading in East Africa, Swahili is a lingua franca (no, that doesn't mean a French name) formed of a combination of various African languages and Arabic. And other possible forms of the name include "Baruch" (oops -- "antisemitic") and probably the equivalent in Arabic. Oh no! Another Arabic name!

What a surprise, in a nation of immigrants! I'll have to ask all my friends their middle names so I know who to reject and denounce.

Kahawa (by the way, a Swahili word meaning "coffee.")
