GOP Strategist: Obama Needs To 'Address' His Middle Name

Fallout from Randy Cunningham's insinuative invocation of Barack Obama's middle name at a McCain event continues to percolate, even in the wake of a forthright and creditable apology from John McCain himself. In the immediate aftermath, McCain made it clear that any such commentary that was "disparaging to the integrity, character [or] honesty of either Sen. Obama or Sen. Clinton was wrong." That response only earned him enmity from conservative commentators, including Cunningham himself, who, feeling slighted, vowed to back Hillary Clinton.

This was the backdrop for a discussion of the matter on MSNBC. Republican analyst Cheri Jacobus, initially stuck up for McCain, noting that the candidate was not on hand during Cunningham's remarks and adding that she thought that "[it was] nice that he apologized."

From there, however, the discussion went right off the rails, with Jacobus accusing the Obama campaign of being "thin-skinned" (this despite the fact that the Obama campaign's reaction was simply to offer their thanks to McCain - Bill Burton stated yesterday "It is a sign that if there is a McCain-Obama general election, it can be intensely competitive but the candidates will attempt to keep it respectful and focused on issues."). From there, Jacobus only got several degrees more ridiculous, insisting, "[Obama] has this middle name. Why doesn't he address it and get it out of the way?"

But what's to address? His parents gave him a middle name back in 1961, which, decades later, coincidentally ended up being the same as the last name of a dictator with whom the United States went to war. Is Jacobus suggesting there was some sort of secret plan hatched by Obama's psychic parents forty-seven years ago to provide a minor stumbling block to his presidential ambitions? And hey, Saddam Hussein was a U.S. ally as recently as 1983 - does this mean, for twenty or so years, Obama was the type of person that Donald Rumsfeld would shake hands with?

Wow, you have landed a man on the moon and you are all fighting over a beautiful name.

Some lessons for those who are interested.

Hussain is derived from Hussn, which is Arabic for nice, good looking, or good manners. It is not exclusively a Muslim name. There are Arab Christians who are called Hussein too. And for the record, the Arabic language is not exclusive to Muslims only. Remember, Some Arabs became Christians before the Europeans landed in America. And no, they will not change their names to John or Mary, Their names will still be Yahya, and Mariam. And they can still be proud Christians too.

Obama has nothing to explain. However, someone unfortunate enough to be called George Walker Bush has too much to explain. It sounds like the name of an oppressive white master.

The Walkers have some fame as well , ever heard of the WALKER CUP? It is a Golf Trophy like the Ryder Cup, but for amateur golfers, named by a Bush relative, a Walker, who donated the trophy.

The name Hussein (Husayn) dated back to the days of Mohammad. Husayn was his 2nd grandson's name.

I don't see this middle name as a bad thing. I think it would help to ease tensions with the US and Arab nations, who had a positive view of the US before the Iraq invasion.

Now there is a good point. It seems to me many of the common folk in the middle east would gravitate towards a US president with an Aribic leaning name. Much like the under-educated masses of the US would buy into this 'middle name' scare tactic. The same. Whatever moves us towards peace works for me.

JACOBUS? What kind of name is that? Sounds semitic to me.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:50 AM on 02/28/2008

You are a CHICKEN! Why "semitic"? come out and say it. It is Jewish! The Zionist jews in America have been trying to attack Obama Husain Barak for some time now. Semitic refers to both Jews and Arabs so it would be incorrect in reference to jews only.

Down the street from Fort Bragg is a big old roadhouse called OSAMA'S. Lots of off-duty troops like to hang out there.

It was still called OSAMA'S on 9-11. Lots of off-duty troops still liked to hang out there.

It's called OSAMA'S because the guy who opened it was named OSAMA. As far as I know, lots of off-duty troops are still hanging out there.

Too funny. It would be interesting to know if any reactionary idiots tried to get the name changed after 9-11 ala Freedom Fries.
I betcha most of the troops were thinking "big deal,it's the same place that it was before Osama Bin Laden came to be an household name"

Silly cons.

If you go to Wikipedia, you discover that his full name is Barack Hussein Obama Jr. That's Jr as in he was named after his dad. Actually all the right-wing yelping about his middle name will eventually benefit Obama because it will get old. Remember it is still February. To all you anti-Obama folks out there I give you something I stole from the first Alien movie. I could be optimistic about your chances (of defeating Obama), but you have my sympathies :-)

I know that I'm willing to apologize for my Judeo-Christian middle name. My parents gave me the name, but you know, it doesn't mean that I'm really entirely onboard with the the Judeo-Christian thing. I'm definitely not for some kind of insane religious war or anything like that.

Maybe Christians should be apologizing for THEIR middle names too. After all, it takes two to tango, and a relative minority of angry Muslim people are angry primarily because Judeo-Christians hurt them, or because they've perceived that Judeo-Christians hurt them.

The country is being run by a criminal conspiracy. The vice president has declared himself a dictator. The economy is falling like a lead weight. The food supply is in danger. Our kids are getting dumber by the day. We're involved in an illegal invasion and occupation that has killed upwards of one millions people. And we're supposed to worry about someone's middle name.

What absolute crap. Who the freak cares?

Republicans reject Barak Hussein Obama because his name is "middle eastern sounding."

Turns out, Barack is a Semitic name which appears in the bible over 300 time! Hussein is also a Semitic name.
Those who oppose Obama's name, oppose the Bible!
Coincidentally, Jacobus is a Dutch form of Jakob, which is a Dutch form of Jacob, which is, (You guessed it) an English form of Yakkob, which is SEMITIC!!!

Looks like the anti-Semitic Cheri Jacobus' roots are showing.

I'm so tired of how people assume that Semites are only Jews. News alert: Arabs are Semites too. The word refers to the language group that they belong to - both Jews and Arabs share the same root language: Semitic.

It's ridiculous how everyone says "anti-semitic" when they mean to say "anti-jew" rather than "anti-jew + anti-arab."

Btw, Israel is also in the Middle East so Israeli names should also sound "middle eastern."

Since when does someone have to explain their name to anyone, especially a flunkie like Jacobus? Maybe she should explain her name?

These people will come up with A N Y T H I N G to attack Obama. What if there was a Republican candidate with the middle name of Josef, as in Stalin or Joseph as in Goebbels? Would that candidate have to explain his name? NO. Would ANYBODY even entertain the thought that that candidate would even HAVE to explain? NO.

It is pathetic that (1) these people use a man's given name to attack him (2) there are people in America, the beacon of freedom and liberty where ANYONE supposedly can get ahead, that eat this shit up and perpetuate it.

I have adopted the name Hussein for the remainder of the campaign.

It's a movement! Many Obama supporters posting on the campaign site have revised their screen names to include Hussein (full discl: I've joined them).

Remember the commercial from the 90s (perhaps for Cheerios?) w/ people's faces morphing into each other, each saying "I'm Tiger Woods"?

Who said that americans associate the name "Hussein" with terrorists? What about King Hussein of Jordan, a long-time ally and friend of America? Hussein is just an Arabic name meaning "beautiful" or "handsome". Obama and his dad are examples of people who have this name but are not muslim. Barack Hussein Obama Sr. became an atheist. And Obama himself, is a Christian.

I agree. Obama does a great disservice to American Muslims by crying racism and demanding apologies any time his middle name is mentioned. As long as he buries his head in the sand about the issue rather than acknowledging it, the more damage will be done to all Americans who have Muslim names.

If he's the nominee, this will only get worse, especially once he's running against a Republican. It annoys me that people resort to such petty attacks, but some people can't rise above hate. Look at how often Hillary has been called a "bitch" - including on MSM.

Unfortunately anti-Muslim prejudice + racism has been tacitly tolerated ever since 9-11. Let's hope it stops soon.

Oh, Hussein, we hardly knew ye. Another Hussein to consider:

King Hussein ruled Jordan for 46 years, longer than any other modern leader in the Middle East. He gained wide acclaim for moving Jordan and its Arab neighbors toward peace with Israel.
During a visit to the United States in 1993, he appeared on the NewsHour and explained what motivated him.
KING HUSSEIN: Well, peace, if it comes to that part of the world, will mean a great difference to a lot of people and the area's important to the rest of the world. It will mean peace between the followers of the three great religions. It will mean an entirely new future for that entire region, and it will mean the removal of the root cause of a lot of instability within the region and beyond. So isn't that worth the effort?
PHIL PONCE: In 1994, he and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin signed a peace treaty which formally ended 46 years of war between the two nations. When Rabin was killed in 1995, Hussein gave an emotional tribute to his one-time foe.

KING HUSSEIN: I had never thought that the moment would come like this when I would grieve the loss of a brother, a colleague, and a friend -- a man -- a soldier -- who met us on the opposite side of a divide. You lived as a soldier, you died as a soldier for peace.
I commit before you, before my people in Jordan, before the world, myself to continue to do our utmost to ensure that we leave a similar legacy. And when my time comes, I hope it will be like my grandfather's, and like Yitzhak Rabin's.

Sadaam, our one-time ally was not the only Hussein in the world. And he won't be the last. Sadaam is dead. Reclaim the Name for Peace!

King Hussein and his fathers before him were puppets - first of the colonial British Empire and then of the American Oil Empire.

The Kingdom of Jordan was a manufactured kingdom. Check the history - they as well as the Saudi "Kings" were actually created to promote the British and American interests in the Middle East.

My given middle name is Salome, is was the name of my grandmother, however in the Bible a lady by that name asked for the head of John the Baptist.

After getting married I got rid of it and I officially changed my name to my First name, maiden name, married name.

I hope if I decide to run for President no one crucify me for my mother's choice.
