GOP Strategist: Obama Needs To 'Address' His Middle Name

Fallout from Randy Cunningham's insinuative invocation of Barack Obama's middle name at a McCain event continues to percolate, even in the wake of a forthright and creditable apology from John McCain himself. In the immediate aftermath, McCain made it clear that any such commentary that was "disparaging to the integrity, character [or] honesty of either Sen. Obama or Sen. Clinton was wrong." That response only earned him enmity from conservative commentators, including Cunningham himself, who, feeling slighted, vowed to back Hillary Clinton.

This was the backdrop for a discussion of the matter on MSNBC. Republican analyst Cheri Jacobus, initially stuck up for McCain, noting that the candidate was not on hand during Cunningham's remarks and adding that she thought that "[it was] nice that he apologized."

From there, however, the discussion went right off the rails, with Jacobus accusing the Obama campaign of being "thin-skinned" (this despite the fact that the Obama campaign's reaction was simply to offer their thanks to McCain - Bill Burton stated yesterday "It is a sign that if there is a McCain-Obama general election, it can be intensely competitive but the candidates will attempt to keep it respectful and focused on issues."). From there, Jacobus only got several degrees more ridiculous, insisting, "[Obama] has this middle name. Why doesn't he address it and get it out of the way?"

But what's to address? His parents gave him a middle name back in 1961, which, decades later, coincidentally ended up being the same as the last name of a dictator with whom the United States went to war. Is Jacobus suggesting there was some sort of secret plan hatched by Obama's psychic parents forty-seven years ago to provide a minor stumbling block to his presidential ambitions? And hey, Saddam Hussein was a U.S. ally as recently as 1983 - does this mean, for twenty or so years, Obama was the type of person that Donald Rumsfeld would shake hands with?

The foaming right is itching, positively convulsing about the fact that they cannot call Obama in public what they call him amongst themselves... and sooner or later, someone, somewhere will slip up and the breast-beating and apologies to follow will be a sight to see. I'd love to say it would be the odious Limbaugh or the fecal Hannity, but they're too smart to do *that* - aren't they?
And speaking of names, look, the President is a Bush, the VP is a Dick - you know what, Hussein's looking pretty good to me right about now.

Can you please ask Huffpo to post your articles in black. The blue is "cool" and "hip" and all that - but it doesn't make it stand out - just incredibly hard to read.

Obama's first and second name are semitic, like:
Barack is a Semitic word meaning "to bless" as a verb or "blessing" as a noun. In its Hebrew form, barak, it is found all through the Bible. It first occurs in Genesis 1:22: "And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth."

John Adams really only had Semitic names. His first name is from the Hebrew Yochanan, or gift of God, which became Johan and then John. (In German and in medieval English, "y" is represented by "j" but was originally pronounced "y".) Adams is from the biblical Adam, which also just means "human being." In Arabic, one way of saying "human being" is "Bani Adam," the children of men.
Thomas Jefferson's first name is from the Aramaic Tuma, meaning "twin." Aramaic is a Semitic language spoken by Jesus, which is related to Hebrew and Arabic. In Arabic twin is tau'am, so you can see the similarity.

James Madison, James Monroe and James Polk all had a Semitic first name, derived from the Hebrew Ya'aqov or Jacob, which is Ya`qub in Arabic. It became Iacobus in Latin, then was corrupted to Iacomus, and from there became James in English.

Zachary Taylor's first name is from the Hebrew Zachariah, which means "the Lord has remembered."

Abraham Lincoln, of course is, named for the patriarch Abraham, from the Semitic word for father, Ab, and the word for "multitude," raham,. Abu, "father of," is a common element in Arab names today

Lovely isn't it!

We have America's
(1) first black candidate
(2) with Middle Eastern names that remind most Amercans of terrorists
(3) who is supported by anti-semite Louis Farrakhan
(4) and attends a church with a pastor who called Farrakhan a "great person"
Obamaniacs need to stop whining "unfair" and find a strategy to deal with this - unless you want to lose

Sure, just as soon as HIllary rejects Ann Coulter's endorsement.

And every veteran GOP candidate apologies for supporting or being supported by Trent Lott, Strom Thurmond or Jessie Helms.

#1 is no more an issue than it was ever going to be.
#2 is being diffused by the children in the GOP.
#3 is addressed above.
#4 is fair game if we can evaluate the leaders of every politicians church.

Will Hillary Clinton denounce and reject her husband for his support of the million more men march...which in part was organized by none other than Louis Farrakhan?

Why should Hillary denounce and reject President Clinton for supporting the Million Man March? It was an event to bring primarily, but not only, black men together to encourage them to support each other, to support their families and communities, to love and support their women, and to be responsible fathers. It was an event to address the challenges that many black men face, challenges that have impacted their own lives as well as their communities and families. All in all, this was a very worthy movement, and to suggest that Hillary should denounce and reject it, simply because it was organized by Minister Farrakhan, is absurd. One does not have to agree with everything Minister Farrakhan has said to recognize that he is more complex than the inappropriate and hateful language he has spoken against Jews. And when he does something as worthy as the Million Man March, it seems reasonable to at least acknowledge that it was in fact worthy.

The concerns you have detailed are based on the assumption that the majority of white America is inherently racist and that the Republicans will use racism as a tactic to incite fear to win the general election. If this is true, then the Republicans have already lost. In spite of the racism that indeed still exists in our country, I think that the election process itself has forced America to examine itself on these issues and to come to terms with their own attitude toward race and gender; and those who will vote against Senator Obama - because he is black, or because he has a Muslim name, or because Minister Farrakhan said nice things about him, or because Pastor Wright has expressed respect and appreciation for Minister Farrakhan's efforts to honor and uplift the black community - will have voted against him anyway. But the majority of Americans, the majority of whom are Democrats and Independents, will not have a problem with any of this, and such tactics will end up being a bigger probem for the Republicans than for Senator Obama.

All right, like others here, in the interest of full disclosure, I will address my middle name. My middle name is "Edward", and...hmmmm...what were my parents thinking?! Hmmm...there must be something wrong here, something I need to address! All right...Edward...Edward...all I can think of are several English kings and a talking horse. But now that I have addressed this very, very serious issue, I hope that we in American can now move on.

In response to this whole "Hussein" nonsense, over 200,000 memebers of Obama's online community have added "Hussein" to their handles.

Classic...I love it.

"Address your middle name and get it out of the way"

I felt chills going down my spine when I heard this republican nazi utter these despicabl words.

I remember when a Klein or a Goldwasser was called out in public in Germany in the 30's
to "explain your name" - yes, explain or lose your position, or worse.

The McCain republicans are showing us what they are made of and it is ugly.

On January 2009 the address of Obama's middle name will be The White House, Washington D.C.

My name is Linda Jane so that makes me an automatic Okie, redneck, backwoods joke right? It's stupid for anyone to have to defend their name first or middle or last. Unless you maaried someone with a goffy name the first and middle are what the parent gave you. I know I have not been happy with mine for years but now as an old boomer who else would I be if I changed my name or Barack changed his. I wonder if all of the Adolf's were plagued with this crap?

Jacobus has a perfect name for a GOP strategist: a combination of Jacobin and Incubus.

There is only one reason for anyone to say anything about his middle name, and it ain't racism.

It's BIGOTRY.

Racism and bigotry are different. Racism is subtle, existing in laws, customs, culture, and the like. Its dangerous; its unjust; but it's insidious. It exists somewhat in the shadows.

Bigotry is racism with its velvet glove removed, its smiley-face mask ripped off, and its crazed, drooling visage revealed for the monster that it is.

Racists think it; bigots just come out and say it. It makes them uglier, but at least you know where you stand.

In the interest of full confession, I need to say that my middle name is indeed "Kaye." I don't know if my parents were trying to prove what intellectuals they were by spelling out a letter of the alphabet or what. Also, I'm sorry that my middle name may remind people of Senator Kay Bailey Hutchinson. Although we share a name, I reject and denounce her Republican policies. I also reject and denounce the religiosity of the Mary Kay cosmetics company.

If I have left out any other "Kayes" whose values do not reflect my own, please let me know. I will denounce them and then, if that still isn't enough, I am even willing to reject them.

Kaye, it's clear that you need to address the similarity of your name to the infamous "K" Street lobbyists. Until and unless you do so, we will have to conclude that you support the activities of these lobbyists.

My middle name is Arnold. Thanks, Mom and Dad. When I was a kid, "Arnold" was a pig on "Green Acres" and my schoolmates mocked me unmercifully for it. Only when I was an adult and watched some reruns of Green Acres did I realize that Arnold the pig was the smartest character on the show.

I'd have given anything to have a different middle name. "Hussein" might actually have won me some respect. Obama's parents have passed, so there's really nobody left for wingnuts to complain to about it.
