GOP Strategist: Obama Needs To 'Address' His Middle Name

Fallout from Randy Cunningham's insinuative invocation of Barack Obama's middle name at a McCain event continues to percolate, even in the wake of a forthright and creditable apology from John McCain himself. In the immediate aftermath, McCain made it clear that any such commentary that was "disparaging to the integrity, character [or] honesty of either Sen. Obama or Sen. Clinton was wrong." That response only earned him enmity from conservative commentators, including Cunningham himself, who, feeling slighted, vowed to back Hillary Clinton.

This was the backdrop for a discussion of the matter on MSNBC. Republican analyst Cheri Jacobus, initially stuck up for McCain, noting that the candidate was not on hand during Cunningham's remarks and adding that she thought that "[it was] nice that he apologized."

From there, however, the discussion went right off the rails, with Jacobus accusing the Obama campaign of being "thin-skinned" (this despite the fact that the Obama campaign's reaction was simply to offer their thanks to McCain - Bill Burton stated yesterday "It is a sign that if there is a McCain-Obama general election, it can be intensely competitive but the candidates will attempt to keep it respectful and focused on issues."). From there, Jacobus only got several degrees more ridiculous, insisting, "[Obama] has this middle name. Why doesn't he address it and get it out of the way?"

But what's to address? His parents gave him a middle name back in 1961, which, decades later, coincidentally ended up being the same as the last name of a dictator with whom the United States went to war. Is Jacobus suggesting there was some sort of secret plan hatched by Obama's psychic parents forty-seven years ago to provide a minor stumbling block to his presidential ambitions? And hey, Saddam Hussein was a U.S. ally as recently as 1983 - does this mean, for twenty or so years, Obama was the type of person that Donald Rumsfeld would shake hands with?

Jason, you rarely make this kind of mistake, but it was BILL Cunningham with the stupid statement. RANDY Cunningham of TOP GUN fame is a former Republican Representative currently doing Federal time for crimes and misdemeanors. Did I mention that the CRIMINAL RANDY CUNNINGHAM IS A REPUBLICAN? Just checking.

LOL. Sometimes Republicans remind me of some of the kids I knew in grade school.

Barack Hussein Obama
The origin of the name Hussein
Arabic Origin: Means Handsome One

In 1961 Barack's father chose a middle name for him of arabic origin and for that certain idiots would have someone believe he means to hand our country over to muslims.

William Jefferson Clinton
The origin of the name Jefferson
English origin, and its meaning is "son of Jeffrey"

George Walker Bush
The origin of the name Walker
English Origin: occupational name for a fuller,
Fulling or walking is a step in clothmaking which involves the cleansing of cloth (particularly wool) to get rid of oils, dirt, and other impurities.

Ronald Wilson Reagan
The origin of the name Wilson
English Origin, and its meaning is "son of Jeffrey"

Does that mean all these other men meant to hand over control of our country to England whom we have been independent of for 232 years?

Good post. But, you reminded me...Ronald (6 letters) Wilson (6 letters) Reagan (6 letters)...ahhhhh...666!!!! The mark of the BEAST! Fairly accurate naming there I'd say ;)

I realize that those who are inclined to make Obama's middle name an issue probably don't think this deeply. But do they have any idea the effect such biggoted drivel has on those people in the ME and eastern Africa who might be inclined to align with the U.S.? Do they realize that the U.S. needs the support of those people? Do they understand that they are undermining U.S. foreign policy?

Look at it this way. When President Obama is sworn in, the people in the ME and Eastern Africa will know that the American people are better than our negative PR would indicate.

"our negative PR"?? Sorry but its not bad PR that is our problem. Its the things that we DO -- like invading countries that pose no threat to us, using white phosphorous and depleted uranium, saying our soldiers and contractors can rape and pillage with immunity, etc.

KING HUSSEIN of Jordan ---For 45 years King Hussein’s commitment to democracy, civil liberties and human rights has helped pave the way in making Jordan a model state for the Middle East region. The Kingdom of Jordan is internationally recognized as having the most exemplary human rights record in the Middle East, while recent reforms have allowed Jordan to resume its irreversible drive to democratization.
Most people in America think of Saddam when they hear "Hussein". The more his name is said, the more accepted it will become. When it is said with a disparaging tone like when Cunningham or Coulter say it, everyone freaks out. But if we all start saying it, typing it, referencing it,...it won't have the effect they want.
I happen to think it's a beautiful name and am sorry it inflames people. Barack Hussein Obama will be our next President of the United States and I will sob with joy when he is inaugurated. And part of me will be thrilled for all the people in the world who will absorb the significance and meaning of it all.

Had Barack been lucky enough to have grown up in Southern California instead of Hawaii, he would have long ago known how to resolve the problem of his middle name:

if you want to consentrate on the GOP using his middle name and not Rezkow, his votes , his fainters, his tent revivals, Farrakhan , and now his Church being investigated by the IRS , then go for it

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:50 PM on 02/27/2008

none of that matters.

The only thing that matters is the war and the economy.

The Chicago Sun Times, who broke the Rezko story, has already said in print that Obama isn't accused of any wrongdoing... Which explains why it hasn't gotten any national traction against Obama; Nor has the church thing. And he put the Farrakhan non-issue to bed easily in the debate, and had the audience laughing and applauding while he did it.

Nice try though. (You might want to check your spelling and punctuation before hitting 'post' next time.)

Since each of the three viable candidates has taken contributions from crooks, or maintained relationships with them at some point or another, the Rezkow thing is a wash. Hillary took huge contributions from a criminal that she returned last year. McCain has that indicted crook in his campaign, and was one of the Keating Five. So all of you thinking Rezkow is going to kill Obama's chance of victory better give up that hope. And knowing the pace of federal cases, if there is anything more there that is explosive (but not necessarily true), it probably will not come out until after the election.

Hussein is a relatively common surname in Kenya. They'd be laughing down there to think we Americans associate the name only with middle-eastern terrorists.

Mbarak Hussein and Ibrahim Hussein are marathon runners.
Hussein Abdi is a respected elder.
Hussein Ali Dualeh is an ambassador.
Hussein Maalim Mohamed works in government.
Ali Mohamed Hussein is Kenya's chief of police.
Hussein Maalim is a former politician.
Sarah Hussein Obama is Barack's grandmother.

...and there are hundreds more Husseins in the Kenya White Pages:

As you say, Hussein hasn't "addressed" his middle name because he has no need to. Any American who thinks it's an issue is someone whose vote Obama and the democrats, in general, wouldn't want in the first place, so no loss. I'm glad the republicans can give them a home because we don't want them.

I actually think it's pretty upstanding of Obama to simply turn the other way.

How about King Hussein of Jordan? He seems to be pretty well liked-even by idiot republicans and bushies. Aren't these boneheads doing great damage to one of America's strongest moderate allies in the Muslim world? Maybe W should say these fools are corrupting his "foreign policy".

All the things Obama needs to address he has already addressed. He's written books about his father and stepfather's nationality and religion, his drug use, his name etc. There's really nothing to address. People who use his middle name with the intention of making a statement do so at their own risk because people like Barack.

On another note... Cheri's kind of hot.

So Barack "needs to address his middle name"?

Is that all you republicans have? Attacking a person's name?

And silly me, thinking that Republicans would never sink lower in the non-issue arena than they did when they impeached Clinton over consensual oral sex.

Barack's middle name is "HUSSEIN"??? Come one GOPers! Are you fucking serious?

How about McCain is part of the Kettering Five?
How about Bush's oil vendetta against "the other Hussein" has got this country into a trillion dollars of debt and has already cost more than 4000 US lives, never mind a million Iraquis dead?

How about that?

You GOPers are IDIOTS!

I'm sure that it would suit GOP strategist just fine for Obama to "address" his middle name.

And open himself to all kinds of ridiculous accusations of him being the Muslim Manchurian candidate.

Why should he?

Is McCain addressing his middle name?

Personally, I'm more suspicious of middle-aged white men.

Except McCain is not "middle aged", he is more like a dinosaur. But I see you working.

Go Obama!

If that's the best that the GOP and conservatives can do, is attack a Democrat candidates NAME... then they are in very very sore shape and it reeks of desperation and panic. No surprise that they would play upon racist attitudes to their racist constituents though. So why didn't Bill Cunningham use John SIDNEY McCain III's full name if he likes to use full name's so much? He's nothing but a hypocritical liar and phoney like the rest of his ilk. And he's got terrible taste in suits to boot.

I want to know if John McCain is related to the Canadian politicians Fred McCain or Margaret McCain and if so, he's got some splainin' to do!
