GOP Strategist: Obama Needs To 'Address' His Middle Name

Fallout from Randy Cunningham's insinuative invocation of Barack Obama's middle name at a McCain event continues to percolate, even in the wake of a forthright and creditable apology from John McCain himself. In the immediate aftermath, McCain made it clear that any such commentary that was "disparaging to the integrity, character [or] honesty of either Sen. Obama or Sen. Clinton was wrong." That response only earned him enmity from conservative commentators, including Cunningham himself, who, feeling slighted, vowed to back Hillary Clinton.

This was the backdrop for a discussion of the matter on MSNBC. Republican analyst Cheri Jacobus, initially stuck up for McCain, noting that the candidate was not on hand during Cunningham's remarks and adding that she thought that "[it was] nice that he apologized."

From there, however, the discussion went right off the rails, with Jacobus accusing the Obama campaign of being "thin-skinned" (this despite the fact that the Obama campaign's reaction was simply to offer their thanks to McCain - Bill Burton stated yesterday "It is a sign that if there is a McCain-Obama general election, it can be intensely competitive but the candidates will attempt to keep it respectful and focused on issues."). From there, Jacobus only got several degrees more ridiculous, insisting, "[Obama] has this middle name. Why doesn't he address it and get it out of the way?"

But what's to address? His parents gave him a middle name back in 1961, which, decades later, coincidentally ended up being the same as the last name of a dictator with whom the United States went to war. Is Jacobus suggesting there was some sort of secret plan hatched by Obama's psychic parents forty-seven years ago to provide a minor stumbling block to his presidential ambitions? And hey, Saddam Hussein was a U.S. ally as recently as 1983 - does this mean, for twenty or so years, Obama was the type of person that Donald Rumsfeld would shake hands with?

The only people who care about Obama's middle name are people who are never voting for a Democrat, anyway.

So it will get no traction from the base we need to win the election.

Let's move on.

Agreed.
Hussein is a very common name in some parts of the world, and, so what? What matters is the individual's character, not only his name or his background. While it is obviously not an anglo-saxon name, not every citizen of the U.S. is anglo-saxon. Eisenhower, Kennedy, Reagan, and Clinton are also not anglo-saxon names, although they are not names that indicate an African or Islamic background. So what? As Sen. McCain rightly said, attacking him because of his name is not something that he wishes to be associated with. Kudos to Sen. McCain.
Once one gets past the initial surprise that someone with a biological father from Islamic Africa is running for the Democratic nomination, what's the big deal? As you say, most people who would choose to vote against him because of his name would also automatically reject any Democrat nominee.

I think Obama should not hide his middle name but show it off saying: do you remember Hussein of Iraq, guy who cost us 1 trillion dollars, and counting?

He's not hiding his name. And Saddam Hussein didn't cost the U.S. 1 trillion dollars. George W. Bush and Dick Cheney did, remember?

You want to isolate Al Qaeda? The best way to do it is to send President Barak Hussein Obama out to the middle east to mend the fences. Any country that can elect a black man with that name will have credibility on the Arab street.

McCain, by contrast, will look like just another Anglo-Saxon imperialist.

It is truly amazing how dumb, ignorant, racist and dishonest Republicans are as a group. They should be studied... like rats.

maybe , but it is even more amazing that in the last few months during the dem primary season they have not even come close to the prograssives.Cunninghams was no more out of line than Olberman or Rhodes or remember Franken being an ass (redundant) to a student just becasuse he was Republican? Obama"s middle name is not to be fretted , names like Farrakhan and Rezkow and words like "present" and vacuous and preacher.

Never mind Republicans, the American population is fearful and ignorant. I bet there is still a large percentage of people who still believe that Saddam HUSSEIN was responsible for 9/11, and they vote. Keep the rumors and innuendos floating around about Obama, add in a few terrorist warnings around election day and .... President John McCain ( he was a war hero, you know!)

Except that Fox News has been playing games with his name since he announced his candidacy, and it sure hasn't affected him in the primaries.

Who wants to study a rat? A rat is a rat. And Republicans are just Americans, they're not like a separate alien species or anything.

Oh Americans! What a half-witted lot! You are probably too stupid to know this, but King Hussein of Jordan was one of your best friends in the Middle East, for years! Not to mention the fact that Saddam Hussein was also your buddy for years. You funded his war with Iran, you did business oil with him, you even sold him those chemical weapons you like to harp about. The truth is, anyone who is such a dim-witted douche-bag moron that they would not vote for Obama because of his name, they are to fucking stupid to figure out how to vote anyway.

"my friends" -- Senator Barack Hussein Obama is going to have to address a ton of shit, including his name, if he is going to campaign successfully. What amazes me is that there such naive ignorance out there in Obama World. The merits of right wing attacks are irrelevant. Politics is a blood sport, period, and I have no idea if Obama can hit back? I'm assuming that right now he is in Primary mode with all of it's tacit, "Party First," pleasantries and limitations. If he does win the nomination it going to be interesting to see how both he and supporters react when the game begins, because "there will be blood," and lots of it.

His casual backhanding of Hillary Clinton up and down the street and the way he curbstomped McCain yesterday are perfect examples.

People have been using this line against him since 2004.

After the convention, people said he was a fad. When he announced his candidacy, people said he wasn't a serious threat to HRC. After Iowa, people said he wouldn't make it past Super Tuesday. After Super Tuesday, people said he couldn't survive the Clinton machine. And now that he's the frontrunner, people are saying he can't beat McCain, despite countless national polls to the contrary.

But by all means, keep on underestimating him - right into the Presidency.

What about, General John Philip Abizaid, fluent in Arabic, and was the most senior U.S. military officer of direct Arab descent. Nicknamed the "mad arab" at Westpoint?
Clearly, this lady is out of the loop, and best serves as strategist to the ignorant.

And what about King Hussein in Jordan, our greatest allies in the Middle East, and the named Hussien's fighting alongside the Marines in Iraq? Clearly this lady's strategy or stupidity will NOT help us win the War on Terror. Arrogance and Hubris is not a strategy but an impediment. Nothing to explain, but something to understand and embrace, we are not in the 1990's anymore, even though her hairstyle clearly is.

Not that he should have to, but I hope Obama does confront this issue (Just do it after Hillary drops out). There are so many idiots out there who think all Muslims are in league with the terrorists. Those same idiots are quick to believe that Obama is a Muslim since his middle name is Hussein. I got a garbage email the other day claiming that Obama was an Al Qaida operative trying to infiltrate the U.S. government by becoming President. I'm not saying the Obama campaign should start printing it on their banners and stuff, but if you avoid talking about it, you make it more of an issue. Obama should confront this head on so that all the ignorant idiots out there don't just fill in the blanks. Announce to everyone you're Christian. Announce to everyone your middle name was given to you back in 1961. Leave your GOP critics with nowhere to go. Then, turn it against them, and imply they're a bunch of bigots.

Yep - in his first debate with McCain, he should say "Let's get this out of the way. I have great respect for the Islamic religion and all peace-loving people, but am a Christian. Yes, my middle name is Hussein, and I have as little in common with some other people who have that name as George Clooney has with George Bush. These kinds of games are a sign of the desperation of the Republican party, they are an embarassment to John McCain and all well-meaning Republicans, and I urge him and them to condemn such attacks, and move on to the issues that matter."

Or something.

Cheri Jacobus and her sweet smile do not agree with her vindictive attacks and repeated overspeaking. In fact, she comes across as an amateur who is as marginal as today's Dana the war-criminal's Press Secretary.

Obama should not change his middle name but rather demonstrate how proud he is of it.

And Cheri, as a devoted Pantheist I would like to outlaw any Christians and Jews from holding public office. So, should we go on a witch hunt against those who have Biblical names? You know that should include pundits as well!

Maybe Cheri Jacobs is right. Let Barack address his name, he has nothing to be ashamed of, he will probably do it anyway.

Look if the ignorants in the GOP want to campaign on Hussein let them. Juan Cole's piece illuminates how foolish that line of attack is. They are trying to tie some guilt by name association smear that eventually even the MSM will shut down. They let it play out now becuase it's a bit of a hype.

Let the bigots be bigots, that is just going to fire up our base more.

I think i am going to give another $100 to Obama tonight.

Besides the GOP will need the practice saying
President Barack Hussein Obama.

This middle name crap is really mind-numbing.

I saw this morning where Republican TV Pundit Joe Scarborough kept mentioning Obama's middle name over and over and over and over again, to the visible dismay of his co-host Mika Bryzinski.

He kept doing it. Mika urged Joe to stop doing it because it could look like he was fanning some flames, but he kept doing it. It was a very telling moment because I had started to lighten up to Scarborough. But when I saw him do that this morning, and saw where he said that "women should be outraged" because Obama is a "good-looking guy" who doesn't have "a resume", I was reminded by Scarborough's tv promo for his show. In his promo he declares, "The Republican Party doesn't own me. The Democratic Party doesn't own me. I have to be responsible to my own belief system."

His own "belief system"? That system was on full display this morning. He tried to diffuse the situation by asking every guest on his show their middle name, but the damage was already done. And when he said that "women" should be outraged, he was referring to "white women" who are only marginally supporting Hillary over Obama. I didn't see Scarborough urge women to be outraged when the president of the New York Chapter of The National Organization of Women claimed Obama took part in a "psychological gangbang" of Hillary in New Hampshire. Joe (who is still a Republican, regardless of what he claims publicly) does not want Hillary or Obama to win the presidency, but sought to fan the flames of bigotry.

I knew Obama's middle name back in 2004. But this morning I found out Joe's middle name: XENOPHOBIA.

Mika Bryzinski should have her own show, rather than put up with the xenophobic talk of Scarborough. So the next time I watch "Morning Bigot", excuse me, I mean "Morning Joe", it won't be for Scarborough.

The real Joe has been unmasked.

No one asked Dick Cheney to defend his name, which correlates so well with how he's treated this country.

Perhaps Jacobus and all the other rightwing hate groups should try a little brain in gear before mouth in motion. King Hussein of Jordan was one our countries biggest allies. His son King Abdallah is also a friend to our country. i wonder what he thinks of his fathers name being trounced in the mud by the radical right.

What in the world is he supposed to do to address his middle name? I am having a problem thinking of any thing that would amount to addressing his middle name. this is typical of the thought process of the right
