GOP Strategist: Obama Needs To 'Address' His Middle Name

Fallout from Randy Cunningham's insinuative invocation of Barack Obama's middle name at a McCain event continues to percolate, even in the wake of a forthright and creditable apology from John McCain himself. In the immediate aftermath, McCain made it clear that any such commentary that was "disparaging to the integrity, character [or] honesty of either Sen. Obama or Sen. Clinton was wrong." That response only earned him enmity from conservative commentators, including Cunningham himself, who, feeling slighted, vowed to back Hillary Clinton.

This was the backdrop for a discussion of the matter on MSNBC. Republican analyst Cheri Jacobus, initially stuck up for McCain, noting that the candidate was not on hand during Cunningham's remarks and adding that she thought that "[it was] nice that he apologized."

From there, however, the discussion went right off the rails, with Jacobus accusing the Obama campaign of being "thin-skinned" (this despite the fact that the Obama campaign's reaction was simply to offer their thanks to McCain - Bill Burton stated yesterday "It is a sign that if there is a McCain-Obama general election, it can be intensely competitive but the candidates will attempt to keep it respectful and focused on issues."). From there, Jacobus only got several degrees more ridiculous, insisting, "[Obama] has this middle name. Why doesn't he address it and get it out of the way?"

But what's to address? His parents gave him a middle name back in 1961, which, decades later, coincidentally ended up being the same as the last name of a dictator with whom the United States went to war. Is Jacobus suggesting there was some sort of secret plan hatched by Obama's psychic parents forty-seven years ago to provide a minor stumbling block to his presidential ambitions? And hey, Saddam Hussein was a U.S. ally as recently as 1983 - does this mean, for twenty or so years, Obama was the type of person that Donald Rumsfeld would shake hands with?

If it wasn't Hussein, these creeps would find something else to slime Obama or anyone who threatened to beat the candidate they can't even stand themselves. These people don't just eat their young, they eat them while they're still conscious.

PLEASE, keep Cheri Jacobus on cable tele dispensing

Republican wisdom.

We so enjoy her humor and asinine comments.

She makes us laugh so hard. Keep her. Watch when

she is proven wrong or about to be cut off from

speaking. Sooo funny!

She takes Republican stupidity down several notches.

Obama won't have any problems with this.

I do believe this race will reveal a lot about America. It really will.

Perhaps Obama should reveal the fact that some of his ancestors arrived here BEFORE some of John McCain's family. McCain and Obama also share a common ancestor, that should make McCain guilty by association.

Just wondering, what's the fascination with Obama's name?I don't get it.Do people in the US look at Josephs funny because they think of Stalin?Do you guys over there mistake Karl Rove for a Marxist? Will it now be a trend to call people by their middle names, like George Winnie Bush Jr.From where I am standing, I am baffled.

Actually, Fox News been playing games with his name since he entered the race - the Hussein thing, the 'sounds-like-Osama' thing - and it's gotten zero traction. The only people who care about it (or pretend to) are people scrambling for a way to effectively oppose him. And failing.

It will not be Obama's middle name that will create hardships for Obama should he be the dem nominee. Setting aside Ralph Nader, Obama's other problem will be the race card so effectively used against Clinton. However the race card will not work against the republicans, simply because they do not give a damn about the race issues. The republicans are not going after the black votes-they will be GOING AFTER OBAMA himself. The empty words of "hope, change, and we are the one(s) will all hang aroud Obama's neck like a ball and chain even if those are only empty words with no substance. Obama has won all the states that will never vote democratic in the general election. So Obama is way behind in democratic commitment so far as democratic votes. Hillary is still leading in democratic votes that will count in the general election. It may be amusing to watch Obama wallow in the racial swamp he has created as the repubs use him to rid themselves of their pent up ire toward GW Bush.

Hope and change aren't empty words when they are coupled with policy and the power of popular support, and regardless of your assertion, current displeasure with congress and the president, at least as evidenced by the dismal approval ratings of both, would indicate that the majority of the American people are in agreement about that. As for your assessment of which states will go democratic, I very much doubt you are correct. Democratic voters have been substantially more motivated than republican voters in the primaries and that is very, very likely to carry over into the general election. In many states, turnout favored the dems by a 2 to 1 margin or better. Nader is a non-player and has been since 2000. I've yet to see anybody on the democratic side, especially Obama, play the "race card." I think what you don't get is that democrats care about competency, color isn't an issue. If the republicans try to make it one, it's more likely that the impact will be increased motivation on the part of ethnic voters of all colors to putthe GOP in its grave. Although, with that said, the comment that republicans aren't going after black votes (which I frankly find to be as inaccurate as the rest of your post), is quite telling. Seriously, it's 2008 not 1968.

You say, incorrectly, that, "Obama has won all the states that will never vote democratic in the general election. So Obama is way behind in democratic commitment so far as democratic votes."

It's going to be fun to watch Obama take states that voted Republican in 2004, the so-called 'purple' states. This will likely include Iowa, Colorado, Virginia, and possibly Missouri. There is, of course, potential he will take a few more purple states in the general, I think New Mexico and Ohio.

The blue states that Obama won in the primaries include Illinois, Washington, Delaware, Maryland, Minnesota, Connecticut, Maine, Wisconsin, Hawaii, and (not a state)D.C. The 'always blue' states will also vote for him, and these include New York, California, New Jersey, Oregon, Massachusetts, and Vermont. There's a good chance he will also take Pennsylvania, New Hampshire, Rhode Island and Michigan (all blue in 2004 except NH).

It should be a landslide. The dessert will be seeing which red state(s) Obama takes.

I'd like to see Cheri the blonde dipshit ask Senator Obama to address (whatever the hell that means) his middle name right to his face. Sit down Cheri and have a one on one with Senator Obama and ask him the stupidest question on the planet, which has no relevance to any discussion at all. Then let Senator Obama graciously and calmly answer your question and in the most respectful way completely obliterate you and your significance.

Why stop at Senator Obama's middle name? The GOP should immediately demand that Obama explain by what right he grew to be taller than his presumed Republican opponent. And how dare Obama repeatedly demonstrate an intellect superior to that of the current president? Shouldn't GOP operatives be questioning whether that's a sign of disrespect for our fearless leader?

The reubs seriously have nothing if they are going after a guy's middle name. Who on earth was ever able to as a not born yet baby control their prents and thus control what name they got?

Craaaaaaaaaaaaaazy!

Hussein is a pretty common name in the middle east.

Do people go on TV in the middle east and insinuate that having a name like George, or John, or Bill makes you a bad person?

This guy should shut up and disappear.

I'd be embarrassed to be from Cincinatti if this guy represents it.

Wanna bet that his views represent only 30% of Cincinatti? How do you win an election running on policies that only 30% of the public support?

You don't. Unless you cheat.

If the best that the Republicans can do is this infantile argument about Obama's name, then I think they're going to have a problem (another one). This kind of thing may motivate their bigoted, closed-minded drooling base, but it's not going to impress anyone who thinks about it. I can't believe that even honest conservative Republicans who have reasonable disagreements with Obama aren't at least a little embarrassed about this.

Maybe Cheri Jacobs is right. Let Barack address his name, he has nothing to be ashamed of, he will probably do it anyway.

Look if the ignorants in the GOP want to campaign on Hussein let them. Juan Cole's piece illuminates how foolish that line of attack is. They are trying to tie some guilt by name association smear that eventually even the MSM will shut down. They let it play out now becuase it's a bit of a hype.

Let the bigots be bigots, that is just going to fire up our base more.

I think i am going to give another $100 to Obama tonight.

Besides the GOP will need the practice saying
President Barack Hussein Obama.

Obama 08
