GOP Strategist: Obama Needs To 'Address' His Middle Name

Fallout from Randy Cunningham's insinuative invocation of Barack Obama's middle name at a McCain event continues to percolate, even in the wake of a forthright and creditable apology from John McCain himself. In the immediate aftermath, McCain made it clear that any such commentary that was "disparaging to the integrity, character [or] honesty of either Sen. Obama or Sen. Clinton was wrong." That response only earned him enmity from conservative commentators, including Cunningham himself, who, feeling slighted, vowed to back Hillary Clinton.

This was the backdrop for a discussion of the matter on MSNBC. Republican analyst Cheri Jacobus, initially stuck up for McCain, noting that the candidate was not on hand during Cunningham's remarks and adding that she thought that "[it was] nice that he apologized."

From there, however, the discussion went right off the rails, with Jacobus accusing the Obama campaign of being "thin-skinned" (this despite the fact that the Obama campaign's reaction was simply to offer their thanks to McCain - Bill Burton stated yesterday "It is a sign that if there is a McCain-Obama general election, it can be intensely competitive but the candidates will attempt to keep it respectful and focused on issues."). From there, Jacobus only got several degrees more ridiculous, insisting, "[Obama] has this middle name. Why doesn't he address it and get it out of the way?"

But what's to address? His parents gave him a middle name back in 1961, which, decades later, coincidentally ended up being the same as the last name of a dictator with whom the United States went to war. Is Jacobus suggesting there was some sort of secret plan hatched by Obama's psychic parents forty-seven years ago to provide a minor stumbling block to his presidential ambitions? And hey, Saddam Hussein was a U.S. ally as recently as 1983 - does this mean, for twenty or so years, Obama was the type of person that Donald Rumsfeld would shake hands with?

I find it hilarious that we might have a President with the name :Hussein" in his name if Obama s elected after what we have done in Iraq.
No matter what happens in this election if Obama is the nominee, I am not voting for the first time in many years.

Doesn't the GOP have more important things to worry about than his middle name? Are these people completely retarded? Even Karl Rove says they shouldn't make an issue out of it.

Know wonder this country is in a mess... we've been led by retards for the last 8 years.

Bigots? Yes, I would say the GOP are bigots. What the hell does Sen. Obama's middle name have to do with anything? The GOP know that he will be the Dem nominee. They are going to pull out all the stops.

But questioning his middle name is ridiculous. He did not name himself. He is named after his grandfather. A lot of people in Africa and the middle east have that same name just as in the US Jones, Smith and Williams are common.

The GOP are walking a slime rope here.

I LOVE the name Barack Hussein Obama! He was given that middle name to honor his grandfather and it means "Good". The name Barack means "Blessing".

IMO, I think his name fits him well. He is good and a great blessing to our country.

Check out Juan Cole's (President of the Global Americana Institute) post about this:

The GOP needs to explain their weird obsession with Sen Obama's middle name (which btw means "handsome" and was the name of his grandfather in Kenya).

If this is indeed just calling Sen Obama by his full name and not some veiled (or not so veiled) religious/ racial bigotry, then we should also refer to the other candidates by their full names: John Sydney McCain III and Hillary Diane Rodham Clinton.

This is the height of arrogance and ignorance. Obama has no reason to "explain," his middle name. Why doesn't this asshole Cunningham explain HIS middle name. It would make about as much sense. Even if Obama WAS a muslim (which I know he is not), that has no bearing on the office of president. It is actually unconstitutional to bar a man from office because of his religious affiliations. But these ARE republicans we're talking about here.
