Newsweek:

Researcher Lori Neighbors, an assistant professor of nutrition at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, recently took a more scientific look at the relationship between looming nuptials and weight loss. In a study recently published in the journal Appetite, Neighbors followed the dieting patterns of 272 engaged women who were, on average, six months away from their wedding day. She and her co-author, Jeffrey Sobal, professor of nutrition at Cornell, found that 70 percent of them were trying to lose more than 20 pounds and another 20 percent were closely tracking their weight to ensure that they didn't gain anything.

God, I hate weddings. Among all the rackets in this country, the wedding industry is one of the most heinous, built to bilk young couples (and especially young women) out of their life's savings by selling them the trappings of a huge tacky show they didn't really want until someone told them they should. And what do they have to show for it? A bunch of pictures.
I've always been of the opinion that most women want a big wedding because it's their only chance to get dressed up in a costume and be in a show. Me, I've been doing shows my whole life, so had no need of it.
My first wedding was a huge $25,000 show- the marriage was almost as short as the ceremony. (Boy, were we young.)
Second time around, we got married in our living room in the company of about 30 friends and family members. Guess what? Still just as married.
C'mon girls, wise up. You don't have to bankrupt yourself to finance the wedding industry. Go to the justice of the peace, put a down payment on a house instead, and concentrate on enjoying your married life.
