Tennessee Republican Chairman Robin Smith says she stands by the state party's use of "Barack Hussein Obama" in party criticism of the Democratic presidential candidate - even though John McCain says it's inappropriate.

McCain, holding a big lead in the Republican presidential race, Tuesday apologized for criticism of Obama by a radio talk show host who introduced McCain at a rally. Asked if it was proper to refer to Obama by using his middle name, the Associated Press reports that McCain replied:

"No, it is not. Any comment that is disparaging of either Senator Clinton or Senator Obama is totally inappropriate."

The state GOP on Monday issued a press release under the headline "Anti-Semites for Obama" that begins:

"The Tennessee Republican Party today joins a growing chorus of Americans concerned about the future of the nation of Israel, the only stable democracy in the Middle East, if Sen. Barack Hussein Obama is elected president of the United States."

Ok maybe we can post stuff here. The GOP is desperate. The only people this is going to effect is the ignorant mass that would not vote for Obama anyway. This is the same ignorant mass that dosen't take into account that Obama was born before Saddam rose to power. It is the GOP that put Saddam in power. It is also the same GOP that helped Osama Bin Laden become what he is today. That is what the GOP should be worried about.

I would respond about this, but thanks to the Huffington ban on free speech maybe I shouldn't.

Seems like we're off to Jonestown.
"Hey, why are we here?"
"Well, because he looks good and speaks well."
"Oh, okay. Hey, what are we doing in this line?"
"Refreshments!"

I hope the republicans continue to use his middle name, just spot lights their racists attitudes and nasty campaign tactics. It's having the reverse affect they want however, I know every time I see mention of his middle name I go to his web site and make another donation LOL.

Good Grief! We are possibly going to elect the first Black American President and people are hung up on his middle name? And we have a viable female candidate, too, for the first time (you never know). I thought we were showing real signs of progress in this country (oops! That word: progress. Isn't that sort of like progressive, as in forward looking and advancing the rights of people and recognition of them as equals? Is that a bad word? I guess, to some). What if we had a candidate by the name of Jesus (pronounced Haysuse) Martinez.? Would that be offensive? more than likely, to the same people who can't get past "Hussein" (the BAD one is dead and gone). C'mon folks. Use the brains you were born with! P.S Barack, I understand, translates as "blessing". Feel better?

"Use the brains you were born with!"

The problem is the neanderthals on the right. They're doing the best they can with what they got. It's just outdated and underpowered for complex situations like distinguishing between Barack Hussein Obama, Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. Too much to compute all at once.

As a 10-e-c progressive I knew it was only a matter of time before my state's inbred, racist, neo-facist repugs would once again shine the national spotlight on good ol' Tennessee. They've been so bored ever since they lynched Harold Ford Jr. Good work boys, now go burn some books or crosses or something.

Maybe he is ashamed of his middle name. How many times have we heard Hillary referred to as Hillary Rodem Clinton. Why are we letting the press derail us from getting answers to the questions concerning "OUR" everyday life? We deserve better reporting.

How can you be so obtuse? The objection stems from the fact that the middle name is deliberately being used to create a false connection to Saddam Hussein, Islam, etc. These are gutter tactics, and honest, decent people object.

And honest, decent people understand the tactic.

It only works for those folks who are so obtuse that they think that the name means something other than it really is.

"A rose, by any other name..."

The press isn't derailing, the intellectual-white-trash lowlives who use these tactics are. Pay closer attention.

I don't think he's at all ashamed of his middle name, fact is we all know why it's being highlighted. You don't hear the other candidates being referred to my their entire names. How many people go around introducing themselves using their entire birth names, none I know. People would think something was wrong with you if you did.

And yes before Hillary became a senator she was often referred to by her full name but once she became a Senator that was no longer true.

But I think it's a good thing they are trying to use this against Obama just makes his supporters more determined. I know every time i feel they are playing dirty I go make another donation to his web site LOL.

The funniest part about this is just how powerless the wingnuts really are. They got a beat down from their own party, it's hysterical. You think more off them would have voted for Huckaby... shame.

Well, his full name is Barack Hussein Obama, Jr.

The Junior part is not dignified! Can you think how "President Junior" will sound to people? He should address that vigorously.

That reminds me of a fellow named Sonny (Whatever his last name was, I won't say since he is still alive and might sue me!) who in the tail end of the good old days when All White men were Mister to all Blacks, roared his anger when one old Black man 'forgot':

"I'm Mister Sonny to the likes of you, Boy."

Gotta maintain our God given dignity!

By ther way, Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. was born into a Muslim family but became an atheist before Barack, Jr. was born. Oh my gosh, now Barack needs to defend that, too. Of course, Barack had no way of being affected by that for his father left the scene when he was two.

And here's another horror Barack, Jr., must defend: he went to school in Indonesia from the age of six to the age of ten, and in that school, he didn't speak English! The instruction in the school was in Indonesian. That could have poisoned his mind. Would you want your child to be forced to use Indonesian?
And it was a public school he went to in Indonesia. And kids from Christian, Bhuddist and (horrors!) Muslim families went to it. Could we tolerate a multiculturally educated president?

Can we bear the notion of a president who went to school in some Asian country just because his Mother and stepfather were there?

Is it thinkable to have a president that speaks a foreign language? Can you stomache it?

It is so great that we aren't yet subjected to such horrors. Our great Dubya shows the way. He speaks no human language well, isn't really educated worth a damn. ("Are there any Blacks in your country, Mr. Cardoso?" he asked about Brazil.)

So much to answer for to so many of us who resemble our dear Bush more than we realize!

Of all the crappy things the republicans have done in the past seven years and beyond, does anyone else find it a wee bit pathetic that the only denunciation McCain can muster is over the supreme horror of actually using a candidate's middle name?

The Tenn GOP is out of line.
The use of the H-word has no place in American politics.

You know better. This is intellectual-white-trash

baiting. Your party's favorite pasttime and most successful political tactic, on public truial. Don't be so obtuse.

More significantly, this only the stuff your party is revealing publicly! Imagine what is being said, mailed, e-mailed in the party's closed circles (hint: they probably aren't mentioned McCain's illegitimate black baby this time!)

Yes, it does have a place in American politics! Or haven't you been paying attention? Barack Obama should have no qualms about it being used. Then again, isn't it something that should be expected? Only the sorriest of voters would think that there's a connection between his middle name and that of the late () ruler of Iraq.

Kind of speaks volumes about those voters who would be swayed by such a tactic.

Such is American politics.

Remember that Republicans speak in a code that instantly kindles a primal reaction in the SBC God-fearing crowd that is their base (all 20+% of them). Their use of certain words is carefully chosen. Now what kind of response do you think "Hussein" would evoke?

In Tennessee the primal percentage that would respond is higher, so there you go. They've got so little to attack with, it shows.

The type of people who would not vote for Obama because of his middle name I suspect belong to the same group of people who would not vote for an African American regardless of his name.

Sounds like something the Bush's would do. Still I think the country understands there is only one reason why it's being done. There is nothing positive the GOP has done.

Aren't these people learning yet that these innuendos show their pettiness and ignorance?

Dan Abrams had a Congressman from GA on last night questioning Obama's lack of a flag lapel pin. Abrams got him quickly by noting that the Congressman didn't have a pin on either and all but called him an ingnorant fool.

Rep. Jack Kingston. I went to his website, registered, and e-mailed him a note about that.

He admitted he engages in these tactics cause it's fun!
What a statesman.

republicans pay people to do this!
