Bush On $4 Gas: "I Hadn't Heard That"

During a White House news conference Thursday morning, President Bush said the country is not headed into a recession, noting that the government has acted "robustly." His view of the economy, however, is far more chipper than that of many economists, who fear the country is entering a recession (or may even already be in one. In fact, when asked by a reporter about what advice he'd given an average American, who is faced by the prospect of $4 gallon gas, the President responded: "That's interesting. I hadn't heard that. ... I know it's high now." Watch the video from MSNBC:

Actually gasoline isn't going up in price, the dollar is going down in value, so it takes more of 'em to buy the same amount. Fortunately for BushCo the profits are so obscene it's definitely worth it for them and as for ChaneyCrimeFamily; they've divested, as witnessed by Halliburton's move to the middle east. Yeah, the rats are leaving the ship, which is OK with me since they're the ones that gnawed a hole in the bottom of the boat in the first place and once they're gone we can focus on bailing and hopefully invest in some nice rat proofing.

Just wait until OPEC officially starts pegging the price of oil to the Euro instead of the dollar. It will almost certainly happen this year. Then you're really gonna see something. Unless we manage to get the Rethugs out of power, the Euro will be 2 bucks before 2012. And that's just if things don't get worse than they already are.

Right you are. Oil is denominated in dollars, so the strength or weakness of the dollar has no direct impact on what we pay. But it makes oil cheaper for those countries whose currency is strong relative to the dollar. And by some nmeasures the European economy is now larger than the US economy, which could make the euro the new default denomination for all sorts of commodities. If so, we're really screwed.

Toyota, meanwhile, is taking their entire product line hybrid while Detroit continues to push out big SUVs. History does repeat itself.

Excellent point about the Euro. That's why Bush had to invade Iraq, and was so hell bent on invading Iran: both countries wanted to convert their oil market to Euros.

We're not in a recession until GDP goes down for 2 consecutive quarters, since it went up last quarter it's impossible to be in one now.

He should have answered: " Yeah, I heard last spring that we would be over $4 per gallon by the end of last summer - it didn't happen!
