CBS Reporter Shot With Raygun

This Sunday, 60 Minutes will report on a new non-lethal crowd control device, which they refer to as a "raygun." And the best part is: they "shoot" it repeatedly at reporter John Martin! The device, shown being used on Martin in the video below, causes extreme discomfort for those caught in the path of its beam. Martin describes the sensation as akin to being dowsed with scalding water.

The benefit of the device is that it stands to cut down on the sorts of civilian casualties that arise from demonstrations and riots and the presence of the drunken employees of Blackwater. The only downside is that the device can be thwarted by a mattress.

Looks (also) like plywood did a pretty good job, "it just left too much of my body exposed." So, it stands to reason that a suit of armor could be developed. With luck, it could be worn comfortabl­y... For the time being, everybody make your protest signs just a bit bigger than you, out of plywood, with a handle or two on the back so your hands don't need to be exposed. When they pull out that big truck, everybody align up like soldiers, overlapping your signs just a bit, making a protective wall! Some people outfit your plywood with a sheet of shiny metal - perhaps stainless steel, or aluminum - and we'll see if we can't redirect the beam! If we can learn how this thing works, science can point a way to a solution..­.

The BEST thing would be a law that prohibits things like this in the first place. Or prohibits their use on Americans. Or, something like that. I think this is an OUTRAGE, but what's to be done about it?

I must point out, however, this is still better than the bullets they used at Kent State and at Berkeley in the '60s - quite a few people died...

Kind of intersting that our military is investing in hardware to deal with crowds. Are they anticipating an outbreak of civil disturbance for any particular reason? Was it the sound of the gates rattling, or the sharpening of the guillotines that got them busy?

Thanks for the tip, Jason, I think I have a kid's size mattress from an old bunk bed somewhere in the attic. I can sew a handle on, to hold it up with one arm while the other one carries my protest sign.
