WASHINGTON — In a remarkable financial recovery, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton raised $35 million in February even as Democratic rival Barack Obama was outspending her in key March 4 battlegrounds.

His financial superiority has been evident in the primary states of Texas and Ohio, which vote Tuesday and where he has purchased $7.5 million in advertising to her $4.6 million, targeting early voters, young voters and voters in regions with concentrations of delegates.

Clinton's fundraising more than doubled her January fundraising, when she collected $14 million to Obama's $36 million. Clinton has lost 11 straight contests since Super Tuesday on Feb. 5 and her ability to raise money was all the more notable coming in the midst of defeat.

"It was incredibly gratifying to see people come forth with this vote of confidence in me," Clinton told reporters in Hanging Rock, Ohio. "Obviously this is a tremendous benefit to my campaign."

But Obama has been raising money at an even greater rate and spending it, too. Some estimates place his February fundraising at more than $50 million _ which would be about half of what he raised in all of 2007. Obama spokesman Bill Burton would not divulge a total but said: "We've raised considerably more than" Clinton.

Obama's campaign had spent $2.4 million on ads in Ohio as of Tuesday, to her $1.3 million, according to TNS Media Intelligence/Campaign Media Analysis Group, which tracks political ads. Clinton spent $3.3 million in Texas; Obama spent $5.1 million, the firm's figures show.

Clinton began running a new ad in Ohio Thursday, with Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland promoting her as a "fighter." "I think she's a person who has devoted her life to caring about other people, making sure that America works for everyone, not just the privileged few," Strickland says in the ad.

Obama is targeting younger audiences in his ads, buying expensive prime time spots on programs such as "American Idol" and evening sitcoms. On Tuesday, for instance, Obama bought 38 spots on "American Idol" broadcasts in Ohio and Texas, and in the two other March 4 primary states _ Rhode Island and Vermont. Clinton bought only six spots on the show in relatively small markets.

"She's where most of the traditional political buying is," said Evan Tracey, an ad analyst and president of TNS Media. "He is in the choice real estate _ it's the luxury end of political buying."

Obama also bought ad time on such Tuesday night programs as "Big Brother," "The Biggest Loser," and "Jericho," a CBS series with a devoted fan base.

Obama also was getting help from labor unions, even though in the past he has criticized rivals who received help from outside groups.

The Service Employees International Union began spending $1.4 million on ads supporting Obama in Ohio and Texas. The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union was spending nearly $200,000 on ads in Ohio. What's more, the SEIU was spending a total of about $1.4 million supporting Obama through phone banks and door-to-door canvassing in Texas and Ohio.

"We are facing a real wall of money from the Barack Obama campaign," senior Clinton adviser Harold Ickes acknowledged during a call with fundraisers Thursday. "But based on everything we know today, we are confident we have very strong operations there."

Former President Clinton, campaigning for his wife at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I., said: "If she can win a big victory here in Rhode Island, win in Ohio, win in Texas, she'll be on her way to the White House."

He also said: "We've had a great life. She's going to be fine regardless."

Clinton entered February with $9 million cash on hand for the primaries and about $7.5 million in debts. Obama had $18 million for the primary and $1.1 million in debts.

If both candidates raise more than $35 million each this time, that would make February an astounding fundraising month for the Democrats. At that rate, both candidates would break records for contestants in a primary fight.

Obama told reporters on his campaign plane, "I have no idea how much money we've raised, but we've been paying our bills. Right now, I believe we're doing very good."

In their call to fundraisers, Clinton's advisers announced that the campaign had raised the money from 300,000 donors, including 200,000 new contributors, most of them donating through the Internet. Aides said almost all the money was for the primary election.

"We have resources to play in big states coming up: Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont and states beyond," campaign Chairman Terry McAuliffe said.

Clinton said reports of her relatively weak fundraising in January and her decision to lend the campaign $5 million started a wave.

"People want this campaign to go on," she said. "It just set off a chain reaction around the country. People start paying attention at different points in a campaign. Now people are engaged."

But some Democrats wondered whether the additional money was too late and not enough to match Obama.

"The Clinton campaign clearly has much more money than they had before, but they are still being dramatically outspent by Obama," said Simon Rosenberg, head of the New Democratic Network, a think tank. "And things don't seem to be trending their way and they don't have a lot of tools to deal with it anymore."

Why can't we see this?:

A GOP ace in the hole?

...there exists a vault of information American voters are not aware of concerning the Clintons — information which should have been brought to the nation's attention well before the kickoff of the 2008 presidential campaign.

The bedeviling problem is that party leaders on both sides of the congressional aisle conspired two years ago to bury the telltale documents. I'm referring to the 120 missing pages of the Barrett Report which, by all accounts from Washington insiders, former press secretary Tony Snow among them, contain sufficient evidence of Clinton misdeeds not only to furl Mrs. Clinton's presidential flag but quite possibly to send her and her miscreant husband straight to the courtroom dock. Yet the papers have lain moldering in some deep Capitol Hill tomb with no one daring to dig them up though they can be exhumed on demand by any member of Congress.

So much for Hillary having the spotlight for a news cycle. Obama has raised about $50MM so far this month.

That's all she deserves these days. One cycle.

"Honored", then "How dare you...", blah, blah, blah...

Each day's new phony tactic gets cursory attention for one cycle, and then it's done.

Day one, and done.

Imagine this, if Hillary was a prize fighter or a thorough bred or just about in any other area of life where one needs to compete for a title, after losing 11 straight attempts she would be a goner. A prize fighter would by now find work as a sparring partner, a thorough bred would be used as a farm horse or maybe sold to the carnival, an athlete would resort to coaching and a politician would become a lobbyist. A republican would become a comedian on the talk show circuit ala Huckabee. I wonder if those who are sending money to the Sen. from NY would still back a pony after 11 lost? But then isn't hope a great thing?

"I wonder if those who are sending money to the Sen. from NY would still back a pony after 11 lost [losses]? "

It's fairly obvious that those who send money to the Junior Senator from New York, can't tell one end of a pony from the other.

For all those who are seeing the seachange...the guilt attacks suffered now by the cable news majors...do not fall for it. What you have been experiencing in the last 2 months..is real, it is real.

The cable stations want the Democratic primaries to go on and on to give themselves ratings fuel to the fire going into April.

How are they stoking those fires now?

Degrading the candidacy of Barack Obama.

It is pure media politics.

When Clinton was inevitable. The press started pressing Obama.

Now that Obama has actually caught fire all on his transformational own, and it could end this coming Tuesday, the media is ah shucking about Hillary and overly scrutinizing everything Obama does including how he dances on the ELLEN show. Holy moly, folks.

Do the media hypers care about either of these hard working candidates? No. Otherwise they would let us figure it out for ourselves..with our guts, our minds, and our hearts.

Barack Obama's candidacy is not a fairly tale, a media creation. It is real, authentically so, and those of you, even Clinton supporters, know he is the real thing. Yes, you, even though as you read this you are getting an uncomfortable sense of knowing despite yourself.

Look folks, this guy scraped his way up from being the biggest underdog one year ago. He worked for where he is. He went out when the room hardly held 100 people. This is the community organizer in him, the person who does believe for others, and for himself, that anything is possible. His transcendency is proof of his abilities.

If we want a stubborn, mean-spirited, parsing, punitive president, we could keep GW Bush. Those characteristics, sadly, are just what describes Hillary Clinton.

Peevish.....She does not want to get the first question on the last debate and scolds Tim Russert.
If she can't deal with going first, where is the Ready On Day One character?

Boorish....."Shame on You Barack Obama". Who in the world gives Hillary Clinton the right to Shame anyone? Ok, you don't like his pamphlets. Be direct. Be specific. No, Hillary has to be degrading,
finger wagging...all the reasons her negatives are so high. She should know what it is like to be shamed. In light of that, what a sorrow that she would try to inject shame on anyone else. Did she not learn anything from her own plight with Bill? Seems she learned all the wrong lessons.

Parsing....At the last debate Hillary didn't like the word "denounce" that Barack used again Minister Farakahn. This is Hillary. Nit-picking ...bullying when she isn't the school yard favorite. She was trying to use the race card against the Black candidate, and Barack would not fall for it. He was filled with presidential aplomb and did not sink to the depths from which Hillary called his name.

Victimized stance...Poor Hillary has no money, gets no coverage, is a woman. Well, if she has no money (which is not true) she either spent poorly, can't manage her campaign, or is not garnering the kind of support that Barack Obama has. Gets no coverage? For one year, she ran as the presumptive nominee and bled that dry. She put herself in a precarious place when she did that, and now she wants sympathy. And, being a woman is a reason to elect a president? No, being a female is not
a reason, nor is being an African American. SHE can cry fowl cause she is a woman. Imagine if Barack cried like that about being Black. But he wouldn't. And, he couldn't.

Change agent. Change agent, Hillary R. Clinton? Change after 20 years supporting NAFTA? Change after being in the White House for 8 years? Change agent, by taking PAC and special interest money? Change agent? ignored the You Tube generation until it served her monetary needs?
Change agent..voting to authorize the Iraq War? What change?

Barack OBama ..who he is, how he raised money, his stance against the war when it was political suicide, how he handles the power that has been bestowed upon him with grace and calm...NOW THAT IS CHANGE.

Do not let the press depress anyone's belief that this time CAN be different. A great candidate needs our steady greatness of support. It is easy to be in someone's corner when it is all going well. Times are tough now against Barack Obama. And, those of us who know our own minds and hearts are here, as we were a year ago before anyone could say or mock his name.

It is always smart to vote your heart.

Exactly. The media only cares about having a story. The follow the best headline. They would bury Obama in a second if there was enough dirt to do it.

If we want a stubborn, mean-spirited, parsing, punitive president, we could keep GW Bush. Those characteristics, sadly, are just what describes Hillary Clinton ... I absolutely agree.

With everything in me, I endeavored to listen to Bush's press conference early today and could not. How exhausting is his nastiness and "baiting" of world leaders, because HE does not understand and value communication, and all the while demonstrating the worse oratory skill imaginable for a world leader.

The "media" if it were to turn the tables to keep themselves honest, may realize and admit the intrinsic role it played in rallying the American public behind this president with the little brain and other neo-cons who ripped apart Iraq on the premise of lies. The media did not ask appropriate investigative questions and simply became stenographers for the Bush Administration. Such failure is indefensible.

While I am impressed with the record of Mr. Obama for the short years he has spent in politics, more importantly I want a world leader who is smart and can speak intelligently and with integrity and he impresses me as a man full of potential and one who will conduct himself honorably. I want a president who respects his citizens: Mr. Bush dished out LIES like we're all stupid. Unfortunately, what I see in Senator Clinton is what I see in Mr. Bush as well Senator McCain and quite frankly, the nastiness has played out. (Besides, how anyone can criticize another for being a great orator, leaves me speechless.)

Mrs. Clinton willingness to openly play the gender card as well pit one ethnic group against another at this critical time speaks to her self-centerness ... not her being a fighter. Most certainly, just as she is the wrong, baggage-ridden woman for president, she is not the vice-president we need either.

God bless America and God bless Mr. Obama for where he will lead this country with the public's acceptance we all have positively can contribute to reawakening the soul of this great country.

I wish I could move to Texas or Ohio so I could vote against Hillary again.

At my caucus on February 5th, our rural Red State town voted 84-6 for Barack Obama, and produced ZERO delegates for Hillary Clinton.

While that was satisfying, I would really love the chance to do it again. Too much is at stake for our country to simply have Hillary and her lobbyists replace G.W. Bush and his special interests.

Obama is right - we cannot simply change the players and expect to get a different result.

Aww, isn't that nice. You and your little narrow minded group got together and acted as a herd. I'm proud of you, really. Too bad the 6 Hillary voters are the ones with the real guts.

Why is it that the Obamabots are so proud to go along with the pack. Be a part of the new fad. Are you really progressives or democrates? What happened to being an individual and casting a critical eye on the mainstream? How did it become, "we are a movement, so get out of our way." How very liberal of you.

And by the way, while you are busy going on about "Hillary and her lobbyists" why don't you take the time and look up something called the FACTS. The FACT is that in his two years in the Senate, Obama HAS TAKEN MORE LOBBYIST MONEY for his PAC than Hillary has. This is an undenyable FACT.

But keep having a good time in fantasyland. Here in reality, you only get to vote once. Thank god for that.

Yes SHE Can, cause SHE is the only one who can.

How come HuffPo does not have a story about this latina woman Adelfa Callejo a Hillary supporter who said the problem with Obama because he is black. At first Clinton would not denounce her because she was not sure she actually said that, but later Clinton said she denounced and rejected her.

I think the story is not important but it sure makes Hillary look foolish for going after Obama during the debate.

On another subject I am so tired of Hillary playing right into McCrazy and the Republikkkan's hands. I have lost count of how many times in the last week that Clinton or her camp has attacked Obama and McCrazy and the other Republikkkans echoed the same exact attacks. Obama has been handling these attacks with no problem unlike she did as front runner but it just shows how low she will go to tear the Democratic Party apart to win what has turned out to be a vanity campaign on her part.

Dont feel sorry for that Harridan!!

Any statement from the Clinton campaign is probably a lie. How much for the general and how much for the primary. Has Billary and Slick Willie donated another 10 million. Have to wait till March 20 for the truth about this. Probably about the same time that we get Billary's tax return. HaHa. Obama will probably raise over 50 so what. If she is getting outspent 4 to1 as Mandy Grunwald claims then this is obviously another Billary lie.

They cant even afford to rent Slick Willie an arena or hall and he is giving his speeches on the back of pickup trucks.

Nope, not maxed out at all. I myself have donated three times this month, and will continue to do so until I reach the federal limit. I think there are a LOT more people like me out there, given the response she's had this month.

You know, the other night on the debate, Obama said his "average donation was $109". Interestingly enough, the next day the New York Times, in a sidebar that focused on fact-checking the statements by BOTH candidates, pointed out that over 50% of donations to Obama's campaign were in excess of $1000.

Now, in order to get to a $109 average, that means a whole lot of people are giving $5. Must be driving the credit card companies NUTS if this is all coming in over the Internet. They HATE having to process those small figures. Plus, the cost to the Obama campaign is higher, proportionally, when you take the credit card fees into account. My guess is that a lot of the small donations are coming in collections at the grass-roots level, especially in the churches that are supporting Senator Obama.

In any case, certainly heartwarming and good for their previously stated goal of getting 1 million people to donate. HOWEVER...it was a bit misleading of the Senator to state the $109 figure as though all of his money is coming from the little guys. He has just as much big money behind him as any of the other candidates.

It appears to me that many of you Obama supporters (at least the ones who blog on this and many other sites) have taken on a cult-like attitude. I too donated for the 3rd time in a week for Hillary's campaign. I am one of her grassroots supporters. I am college educated and have a white collar job. I am so proud to be a Sen. Clinton supporter. But I do not feel the need to verbally attack people who disagree with me with words of hate. I find it almost humorous that you Obama bloggers are often so hateful and vindictive in your words. Your candidate talks about how he is a uniter and not a divider. And look what he's done to his own supporters. It is very sad, and it is my hope that one day all of you will realize the error of your ways.

Does that 35 million include the 5 million she loaned the campaign
and she still won't make public her tax returns? Senator Obama is
going to go over 50 million for this month, so nice try Billary.
