WASHINGTON — In a remarkable financial recovery, Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton raised $35 million in February even as Democratic rival Barack Obama was outspending her in key March 4 battlegrounds.

His financial superiority has been evident in the primary states of Texas and Ohio, which vote Tuesday and where he has purchased $7.5 million in advertising to her $4.6 million, targeting early voters, young voters and voters in regions with concentrations of delegates.

Clinton's fundraising more than doubled her January fundraising, when she collected $14 million to Obama's $36 million. Clinton has lost 11 straight contests since Super Tuesday on Feb. 5 and her ability to raise money was all the more notable coming in the midst of defeat.

"It was incredibly gratifying to see people come forth with this vote of confidence in me," Clinton told reporters in Hanging Rock, Ohio. "Obviously this is a tremendous benefit to my campaign."

But Obama has been raising money at an even greater rate and spending it, too. Some estimates place his February fundraising at more than $50 million _ which would be about half of what he raised in all of 2007. Obama spokesman Bill Burton would not divulge a total but said: "We've raised considerably more than" Clinton.

Obama's campaign had spent $2.4 million on ads in Ohio as of Tuesday, to her $1.3 million, according to TNS Media Intelligence/Campaign Media Analysis Group, which tracks political ads. Clinton spent $3.3 million in Texas; Obama spent $5.1 million, the firm's figures show.

Clinton began running a new ad in Ohio Thursday, with Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland promoting her as a "fighter." "I think she's a person who has devoted her life to caring about other people, making sure that America works for everyone, not just the privileged few," Strickland says in the ad.

Obama is targeting younger audiences in his ads, buying expensive prime time spots on programs such as "American Idol" and evening sitcoms. On Tuesday, for instance, Obama bought 38 spots on "American Idol" broadcasts in Ohio and Texas, and in the two other March 4 primary states _ Rhode Island and Vermont. Clinton bought only six spots on the show in relatively small markets.

Story continues below

"She's where most of the traditional political buying is," said Evan Tracey, an ad analyst and president of TNS Media. "He is in the choice real estate _ it's the luxury end of political buying."

Obama also bought ad time on such Tuesday night programs as "Big Brother," "The Biggest Loser," and "Jericho," a CBS series with a devoted fan base.

Obama also was getting help from labor unions, even though in the past he has criticized rivals who received help from outside groups.

The Service Employees International Union began spending $1.4 million on ads supporting Obama in Ohio and Texas. The United Food and Commercial Workers International Union was spending nearly $200,000 on ads in Ohio. What's more, the SEIU was spending a total of about $1.4 million supporting Obama through phone banks and door-to-door canvassing in Texas and Ohio.

"We are facing a real wall of money from the Barack Obama campaign," senior Clinton adviser Harold Ickes acknowledged during a call with fundraisers Thursday. "But based on everything we know today, we are confident we have very strong operations there."

Former President Clinton, campaigning for his wife at Bryant University in Smithfield, R.I., said: "If she can win a big victory here in Rhode Island, win in Ohio, win in Texas, she'll be on her way to the White House."

He also said: "We've had a great life. She's going to be fine regardless."

Clinton entered February with $9 million cash on hand for the primaries and about $7.5 million in debts. Obama had $18 million for the primary and $1.1 million in debts.

If both candidates raise more than $35 million each this time, that would make February an astounding fundraising month for the Democrats. At that rate, both candidates would break records for contestants in a primary fight.

Obama told reporters on his campaign plane, "I have no idea how much money we've raised, but we've been paying our bills. Right now, I believe we're doing very good."

In their call to fundraisers, Clinton's advisers announced that the campaign had raised the money from 300,000 donors, including 200,000 new contributors, most of them donating through the Internet. Aides said almost all the money was for the primary election.

"We have resources to play in big states coming up: Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island, Vermont and states beyond," campaign Chairman Terry McAuliffe said.

Clinton said reports of her relatively weak fundraising in January and her decision to lend the campaign $5 million started a wave.

"People want this campaign to go on," she said. "It just set off a chain reaction around the country. People start paying attention at different points in a campaign. Now people are engaged."

But some Democrats wondered whether the additional money was too late and not enough to match Obama.

"The Clinton campaign clearly has much more money than they had before, but they are still being dramatically outspent by Obama," said Simon Rosenberg, head of the New Democratic Network, a think tank. "And things don't seem to be trending their way and they don't have a lot of tools to deal with it anymore."

Just saw this posted on Fox:

"Everyone’s afraid of Obama. He’s gonna wallk with the nomination only because people cannot attack him without coming off racist or something like that. Hillary couldnt do it neither McCain. We need to stop him now, BEFORE he gets the democratic nomination. Or November its all his. Vote Hillary Texas and Ohio. She’ll be easier to beat. You can attack her without a backlash."

Funny thing, that's what Senator Clinton's supporters do every time someone like Shuster uses language like "pimping" to refer to a woman ... Don't know about some of the other women here who purport to support a "new day," but if stepping over the bodies of women is how you propose to get there, then yep, a vote for Obama looks like something that I cannot do.

Here's an idea:

Why don't campaigns wait until the end of the month when they have the hard data to provide accurate fundraising figures instead of estimates & on-track-to guesses AND sloggers should wait until those reports are ready for the election committee instead of guessing and offering hypotheticals based on nothing more than their desire to scoop. That link says nothing more than was reported on Feb 15th that Obama is "on track" to raise close to $50 million in February. I hope he does raise those kinds of figures but sloggers are so stupid to jump the gun with no hard facts. Slow news cycle, I guess.

Somehow I feel it is now beyond money raised for Senator Clinton unless the money will be used to buy Super-delegates!

If so, much of what the Senator stands for, appear to be based on a fuzzy democratic foundation. The will of the majority would have been distorted to prove the points Maureen Dowd's article in yesterday's New York Times.

i'm betting obama comes in around $52mil for feb. we little $25.00 donors add up fast, especially when you have 1,011,000. of us as of today. and next month another $25.00 and the next month the same, until he get the nomination.

I'm POSITIVE that Obama has raised DOUBLE this amount. I don't know why anyone would blow their money on Clinton after they wasted so much of their supporters money on doughnuts. Ridiculous. I'm proud to give to the Obama campaign...we are getting a great return on our investment! WOO HOO!

Also, this amount is not so impressive considering that she is KNOWN and is a former first lady.....I'd also be curious to know where most of her money is coming from........

Reading through posts you see all these Obamamaniacs who claim to be completely sucked into Obama without doing any of their own research, obviously judging by their comments. They drank the koolaid already and are willing to throw behind Obama with only sound bytes from CNN to judge by.
They don't want Hillary's plan, they might have to pay for their own health insurance and god forbid anyone under 30 have to do that! The Obamabots attack and spew because Hillary will make them pay their way!
Without us ALL Universal healthcare will fail!
Remember while you are young, old age to YOU shall come.
Try to vote with some maturity and think for yourself instead of eating up all Obama's rhetoric hook line and sinker.

Barack is so much more than your thin characterization of him that it is clear you haven't done your homework or are being intentionally dismissive.

Barack has worked as a civil rights attorney, constitutional law professor and community organizer. He was responsible for personally bringing together a divided state house to pass very progressive legislation and has done the same since arriving in Washington.

Barack is well-versed and accomplished when it comes to doing his job. He has more actual legislative experience than Hillary and has done more in three short years in the senate than she has done in 7. He has a long legislative record that can easily be Googled.

These long years of experience in both DC and Illinois informed his answers in this 52-minute, uncut interview with the editorial board of the SF Chronicle that was very illuminating, even for an Obama supporter: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/object/article?o=0&f=/c/a/2008/01/18/MNSNUH8DR.DTL.

Barack has more experience, both in the classroom, the courtroom and on the streets of south Chicago. He has more accomplishments working for real people in the real world. He has more grassroots support and has raised all of his money from individual donors, most in increments under $100. He has run a substantially better campaign and has already won more states, more delegates and has larger base of volunteers in all 50 states.

You don't have to join us in this transformational moment, but understand that Barack supporters simply aren't going to roll-over for disinformation in the media or baseless attacks on his actual experience and fitness for the job.

Welcome to the 21st Century.

Hillary has zero chance of passing a universal healthcare plan. Bill gave her full control in 1993 over the proposal. She failed. Badly. There is no way Republicans will support her legislation. They have a long history of attacking each other. Obama has been positive in remarks about Republicans. His plan may not pass as is, but a revised plan is possible under Barack.

Obama is not the one who PAYS bloggers to blog them their campaign to drum up attention.

Why does Harvard, Yale, John Hopkins, Berkley, should I go on (over 80 schools), medical and business schools say that Obama's plan is better? Are they just Obamabots as you say? Hillary Clinton's Massachusetts, I mean her plan, has shown to work so well. How many million are not covered in Massachusetts? Maybe it tells you something that the more educated you are, the more likely you are to vote for Obama. That does not go along with your theory we are all mindless robots.

Please use common sense and not Cinton's talking points

Well, that mudball won't stick either.

I've observed Obama for many years as the state senator from my district, and then as US Senator.

I don't need someone to pay my way for health insurance.

Obama has none of the unethical baggage of the Clintons. Such as, for starters, Pardon Money to Hillary's brother from Marc Rich. Actually that one says it all. That's a deal breaker right there as far as anyone concerned with ethics in government is concerned.

And of course all the shady donors, angling for quid pro quos from the Clintons:

The Presidential Library donors.

The "Foundation" donors.

That are top secret and ultra hush hush.

Barack doesn't have any of that unethical baggage to tote.

His donor base is over 1,000,000 people who give small amounts of money.

Not folk like Marc Rich and corporations who are looking for favors from the Clintons.

It's pretty clear that there's another $5-10 million Bill-and-Hillary loan behind her campaign's February numbers. As to where the Clintons got that money, they don't think the voters deserve to know. Which pretty much proves they have something to hide. It's all so familiar.
Meanwhile:

Asked Wednesday about Rep. John Lewis’s decision to switch his support to Mr. Obama, Mrs. Clinton told a Houston television station, “I understand he’s been under tremendous pressure.”

In others words, according to her Royal Highness Hillary Clinton, to the rest of the world John Lewis may be a legendary Civil Rights leader, but to Hillary Clinton, he’s a wimp who doesn’t know his own mind and who gives in to pressure. She could have been noble and said, “I respect his decision.” But that would require a grace and tact which Mrs Clinton utterly lacks.
It’s no surprise that the Clintons see the world in terms of muscling and being muscled,
along with a health dose of blackmail when necessary.
Thank goodness the Democrats of this country are not poised to return this shady creepy Nixonian woman and her corrupt, reckless hubby back to the White House.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:59 PM on 02/28/2008

"they don't think the voters deserve to know".

What in the hell are talking about. They have to release all the information as part of campaign disclosures. Hillary has never witheld those filings so why would she now.

Your post makes absolutely zero sense. If you are representative of the typical Obama supporter then you folks are in for a hell of a shock come November.

You're not too terribly bright, are you? Especially not for someone so condescending.

The poster above clearly says "they don't think the voters deserve to know" where the Clintons got their money... to loan to the campaign.

NOT where the campaign contributions are from.

The type of disclosure you're talking about would simply show, for instance, last month, that Clinton loaned her own campaign $5M. I would NOT indicate, however, where she obtained that $5M from.

In other words (please try to understand this, it's not complicated), campaign finance disclosures show who/what the campaign recieved a contribution/funds from. It does NOT disclose where/how the contributor GOT the funds they contributed.

Got it? That's why people want to see the tax returns. THAT would show where Hillary got her $5M from, whether it be simply from book advances and royalties, or something else.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:33 PM on 02/28/2008

See DaveNy below, he will explain this all to you.
As he says, the Clintons' refusal to release tax returns means one of two things:

1) they have something to hide
2) they look at voters with disdain and see themselves as entitled

or, both

Hey HuffPo, I thought "America had spoken" or that the "people want change." Apparently there exists about what....50% of the party (delegate wise) who think change is Hillary Clinton, not Barack Obama.
One would think if there was this great "mandate" as his supporters claim, she would of received a 1/4 of that amount from previous supporters, not a 1/4 of a million dollars from new contributors.

Well done to her. Impressive.

Any statement from the Clinton campaign is probably a lie. How much for the general and how much for the primary. Has Billary and Slick Willie donated another 10 million. Have to wait till March 20 for the truth about this. Probably about the same time that we get Billary's tax return. HaHa. Obama will probably raise over 50 so what. If she is getting outspent 4 to1 as Mandy Grunwald claims then this is obviously another Billary lie. They cant even afford to rent Slick Willie an arena or hall and he is giving his speeches on the back of pickup trucks.
