Obama:

Obama: "Remember New Hampshire"

RSS stumble digg reddit del.ico.us news trust mixx.com

In a press conference aboard his plane on the flight into Beaumont, Texas, this afternoon, Obama did his best to set a modest goal for Tuesday's vote.

"I think that we have to maintain our delegate lead and make sure that we don't get blown out in those two states," he said. "If we come out of the four contests on Tuesday with a gap in the delegate count of 100 to 150, which we have right now, then I continue to believe that we will go to the convention with the most earned delegates and I believe that we will be the nominee."

Obama needs to win as much as HIllary. He isn't going to hit the required delegate count. And his candidacy will look weak if he is not appealling to states where primaries are held and traditional Democrats have a voice.

I still see quite a lot of questions about his viability in the general election. People assume, wrongly, that Hillary's supporters will transfer to him. Not necessarily.

I don't believe he'll be able to sway the older voters, and that's the group that actually has the bigger percentage.

I don't believe he'll attract the Independents who are more conservative on economics and foreign policy as Hillary is now doing.

I don't believe he'll keep a large number of female voters who are livid about the treatment Hillary has received.

He may well not keep core Clinton Democrats who are also livid about how he has attacked in the same manner as Republics did.

So that could hurt him in the Fall.

If he cannot perform well in the big states, that raises a question.

So I believe he has as big of a stake in winning here as she does.

For the good of the Democratic Party and for our chances of regaining the White House, HRC needs to exit gracefully on Wednesday, March 5th.

By most reputable news accounts, HRC has to win both Ohio and Texas by double digit margins, in order to erase and then retake the delegate lead from Obama. Further, she also has to win the majority of remaining contests to continue building a more impressive delegate lead (in the range of 75 to 150).

While at this point such outcomes seem unlikely, I hesitate that even a close-margin win in either Ohio and/or Texas will lend some measure of momentum for HRC to remain in the race.

Should that happen, then this nomination contest could extend to the Convention, during which a 'brokered' outcome could result. That 'brokered' outcome, and the possible negative consequences thereof, for Party unity, is an issue for another day.

In the interim, should this nomination contest drag out through the summer months, McCain continues to campaign unencumbered. As I am sure many already realize, the Democrats' inability to manage its own Party and select one nominee, increasingly becomes a negative issue for the general election.

As a consequence, the age old tactic of 'divide and conquer' becomes a plausible Republican campaign strategy, whereby the Democratic Party divided itself, and McCain conquered (by default).

Um, Barack, do YOU remember where you're supposed to be during a time of WAR? You're fired.
Tell em, 'Bert told you'. That'll be MY campaign slogan. I intend to free ALL the wage-slaves. Myself included.

Yeah, I remember New Hampshire and the election fraud that occurred. Obama won (dem) and Ron Paul (rep) won or at least came in 2nd place.

Mr. Obama, David Plouffe Has Not Answered My Email

As you know, a little more than a week or so ago your campaign manager David Plouffe from the high-priced, high-powered political consultancy firm of AKP Message and Media broadcast an email request to provide him with personal stories about the recipient's involvement in your run for the Democratic nomination. These testimonials on your behalf were to be forwarded to the super delegates in your effort to court them should they become the deciding factor in the nominating process. I sent him the following reply but have never received so much as a thank you.

* * *
Dear Mr. David Plouffe,

You asked for a story. Here is mine.

I became actively involved in politics by way of political action rather than electoral politics as a freshman at a well-known universities in the South during the mid to late '60s, even before I had an opportunity to vote in a national election.

My first political lesson involved joining a student crew to paint the houses of poor whites and blacks in town, where I learned of the mad paradox of racism that kept both groups imprisoned on the wrong side of the tracks not 5 miles from our ivy-covered halls and flagstone walkways.

The first picture I put up in my dorm room, torn from the pages of Life magazine, was of a wounded American soldier on a litter being evacuated from a lush green rice paddy in a Southeast Asian country called Vietnam. Later, at the Pentagon, a National Guardsman, not 20 feet away, pointed his tear gas grenade launcher directly at me from behind a square of his bayoneted comrades because I and others of my generation did not want him and the others to die 8,000 miles away from home for no damn good reason. At one time, Senator Kerry agreed us.

Later still, my fellow students were tear-gassed by the town police in the main quadrangle because, after the assassination of Dr. King, we had decided that enough was enough and that the campus support workers, mainly Afro-American, needed a better, fairer deal than they were getting.

This was part of my coming of age during the battles of the '60s and '70s, which your candidate told the editors of the Reno Gazette-Journal he is not "invested in," as if that were a badge of honor. Vietnam was the war that my generation fought and died in or struggling to end, the war that your candidate said was not his "frame of reference," as if that too were a commendation for his candidacy. They are not.

Such statements suggest either a sad, willful ignorance or a callow political calculation on the part of your ambitious upstart who comes before the American people with the least national or executive elected service of any president since at least Woodrow Wilson and who otherwise has no significant record of leadership on any national issue of the last decade. Whichever the explanation for his statements, his self-confessed disinvestments from those progressive struggles of the late 20th century should disqualify him from consideration as an agent of change in the 21st.

Or, perhaps he is from a different generation that respects the important sacrifices made by many people at that time, but seeks a different frame work for positioning himself. We're in a different context now, a different framework is appropriate.

You are wrong on Obama's record of leadership. Here's some of his work in the US Senate:

* Lugar-Obama Act to decrease nuclear and conventional weapons proliferation around the world.

* Coburn-Obama Transparency Act transparency in federal spending, found at httP://www.usaspending.gov

* Cosponsored the Healthy Kids Act of 2007 and the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) Reauthorization Act of 2007 to ensure that more American children have affordable health care coverage.

* Obama worked to pass a number of laws in Illinois and Washington to improve the health of women. His accomplishments include creating a task force on cervical cancer, providing greater access to breast and cervical cancer screenings, and helping improve prenatal and premature birth services.

* As a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, Obama passed legislation to improve care and slash red tape for our wounded warriors recovering at places like Walter Reed. He passed laws to help homeless veterans and offered an innovative solution to prevent at-risk veterans from falling into homelessness. Obama passed legislation to stop a VA review of closed PTSD cases that could have led to a reduction in veterans' benefits. He passed an amendment to ensure that all service members returning from Iraq are properly screened for traumatic brain injuries

* Congo: Obama and Leahy successfully passed an amendment to provide $13 million in assistance to the DRC for military reform and election assistance. The bill also provided the the US policy is to oppose and fight against the rape and killings of women that is a particular horror there. Obama has recently sent a letter to Sec. Rice demanding a report of their efforts there.

* Darfur

* Introduced Patriot Employer Act, August 2007, to reward companies for keeping jobs in the US

* As a member of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee, Obama helped pass legislation in the recent improvements to the Higher Education Act to increase the maximum Pell Grant award to $5,10.

* Obama passed legislation with Senator Jim Talent (R-MO) to give gas stations a tax credit for installing E85 ethanol refueling pumps.

* Obama sponsored an amendment that became law providing $40 million for commercialization of a combined flexible fuel vehicle/hybrid car within five years.

* Congressional ethics legislation, called the Gold Standard of ethics reform, passed by Obama and Feingold that ending subsidized corporate jet travel, mandating disclosure of lobbyists' bundling of contributions, and enacting strong new restrictions of lobbyist-sponsored trips. The Washington Post wrote in an editorial, "The final package is the strongest ethics legislation to emerge from Congress yet."

* Obama has introduced and helped pass bipartisan legislation to limit the abuse of no-bid federal contracts.

"ambitious upstart". That's probably what the old people called you and your friends when you dared to take a stand against hack politicians in your day. Just like Obama supporters are doing now.

You know, when Obama talks, he makes common sense. He doesn't dodge and weave. He's articulate, to the point and confident in his speech. Contrast that with the current boob we have in the White House. What a breath of fresh air it will be to have a Commander in Chief that speak the Kings English.

My favorite part is that Obama isn't afraid to say "Yeah I said that. And here's why I said that." Again, contrast that with the dodging and back-peddling you hear from most politicians at the first sign of a challenge.

I'm not naive enough to think that Obama will never mis-step or play the politician but for me he sure as hell is miles above the rest of the pack.

Texas and Ohio, if you're still on the fence about Obama read a greatr (long) article in the Houston Press Today headlined: OBAMA YELLED AT ME

http://www.houstonpress.com/2008-02-28/news/barack-obama-screamed-at-me/print

A revealing part:

Jones had served in the Illinois Legislature for three decades. He represented a district on the Chicago South Side not far from Obama's.

He became Obama's kingmaker.

Several months before Obama announced his U.S. Senate bid, Jones called his old friend Cliff Kelley, a former Chicago alderman who now hosts the city's most popular black call-in radio program.

I called Kelley last week and he recollected the private conversation as follows:

"He said, 'Cliff, I'm gonna make me a U.S. Senator.'"

"Oh, you are? Who might that be?"

"Barack Obama."

Jones appointed Obama sponsor of virtually every high-profile piece of legislation, angering many rank-and-file state legislators who had more seniority than Obama and had spent years championing the bills.

"I took all the beatings and insults and endured all the racist comments over the years from nasty Republican committee chairmen," State Senator Rickey Hendon, the original sponsor of landmark racial profiling and videotaped confession legislation yanked away by Jones and given to Obama, complained to me at the time. "Barack didn't have to endure any of it, yet, in the end, he got all the credit.

During his seventh and final year in the state Senate, Obama's stats soared. He sponsored a whopping 26 bills passed into law " including many he now cites in his presidential campaign when attacked as inexperienced. ...

Before Obama ran for U.S. Senate in 2004, he was virtually unknown even in his own state. Polls showed fewer than 20 percent of Illinois voters had ever heard of Barack Obama.

Jones further helped raise Obama's profile by having him craft legislation addressing the day-to-day tragedies that dominated local news headlines.

I spoke to Jones earlier this week and he confirmed his conversation with Kelley, adding that he gave Obama the legislation because he believed in Obama's ability to negotiate with Democrats and Republicans on divisive issues.

So how has Obama repaid Jones?

Last June, to prove his commitment to government transparency, Obama released a comprehensive list of his earmark requests for fiscal year 2008. It comprised more than $300 million in pet projects for Illinois, including tens of millions for Jones's Senate district.

Shortly after Jones became Senate president, I remember asking his view on pork-barrel spending.

I'll never forget what he said:

"Some call it pork; I call it steak."

I cannot imagine why anyone would think in this country that your letter is at all appropriate. Elections allow voters to choose, not mobs.

Your letter is nothing more than an effort for the mob to control others.

Shame on you all.
