Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan formally denounced Thursday the Tennessee Republican Party's use of Barack Obama's full name in a recent press release questioning the Illinois senator's commitment to Israel.

"The RNC rejects these kinds of campaign tactics," RNC Chairman Mike Duncan said in a statement. "We believe this election needs to be about the critical issues confronting our nation."

I am surprised the chimps here are not attacking Clinton for this.

ImpeachThe chimp - Before reading your post, I pretty much said the same thing about the media, but don't know if my post will make it because I named names. But thanks for validating my position -- my husband was giving me flap about it!!

Later: 527s run disparaging ads.

RNC and McCain Camp: We can't do anything about those.

We'll be hearing the "Hussein" chant from morons for the next 8 years.

Dan Abrams on MSNBC showed the "Hussein" clip last night and again tonight, covering the story in much detail with two "analysts," and showing supposed disgust. But my read is that this is the way the MSM keeps something like this in the news, by saying how disgusting it is, but repeating it over and over, making sure that everyone who might be influenced is sure to see it. He also covered the flag in the lapel story last night and tonight. This is what Chris Matthews did when Kerry was running by showing clips of all the historical "flip floppers" and likening them to Kerry -- as well as all the disgusting swiftboat commercials, etc.-- thereby giving them free air time. This is going to be another very disgusting election with the swiftboaters out in force (and frequently in disguise).

Is his name not Barack Hussein Obama, why try to hide it.

I guess I should not mentioned what I found out about Obama's church as it could anger many jewish people :

Barack Obama is a member of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ. Its minister, and Obama's spiritual adviser, is the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. In 1982, the church launched Trumpet Newsmagazine, with Wright's daughters now serving as publisher and executive editor. Every year, the magazine makes awards in various categories. Last year, it gave the Dr. Jeremiah A. Wright Jr. Trumpeter Award to a man it said "truly epitomized greatness." That man is Louis Farrakhan.

Maybe for Wright and some others, Farrakhan "epitomized greatness." For most Americans, though, Farrakhan epitomizes racism, particularly in the form of anti-Semitism. Over the years, he has compiled an awesome record of offensive statements, even denigrating the Holocaust by falsely attributing it to Jewish cooperation with Hitler -- "They helped him get the Third Reich on the road." His history is a rancid stew of lies.

Heck, the Senator himself says he'd meet with Holocaust deniers like Mahmoud Ahmedinejad.

You know when Joseph Mcarthy found one communist in Jack Welch's law firm and then used that as a basis to attack Welch then even Roy Cohn was embarassed
Why should I or anyone else regard this as any better?

maybe someone here as already said this:

the RNC has been doing focus groups and may have found out that every time the American public is reminded of Sadaam HUSSEIN they want to put Bush and half his administration in JAIL.

Given a country headed into a recession with a 9 trillion dollar debt, housing market collapse, large job losses, runaway gas prices, corporate cronyism, mostly bought legislative branch, politicized judiciary, torture, reduction of civil liberties, pre-emptive wars of choice etc one might naively believe that the average American voter just might think that commitment to Israel shouldn't be an American presidential candidate's very first priority.

' Course I could be wrong!

I would be truly impressed if they can avoid any more smear tactics. I would like to see them take us, the citizens more seriously, this would be one way they could show they mean it. I'll leave it at that and we'll see.

Be prepared to be unimpressed: the republicans can barely contain their racism now. I can almost imagine the red, white, and blue nooses they'll decorate the republican convention with.

Just another attempt to try and swiftboat senator Obama. I have a feeling the American people are not going to stand for such nonsense.

For the third time, I have been asking if there is an arabic speaking commenter, does "Hussein" in arabic mean "beautiful child"? Anyone?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:08 PM on 02/28/2008

You're one the right track: the most popular interpretation of name Hussein in arabic is "hansome one", though it can also mean "good one" or "small one".

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:09 AM on 02/29/2008

"...Now let us take the name 'Hussein.' It is from the Semitic word, hasan, meaning 'good' or 'handsome.' Husayn is the diminutive, affectionate form.

"Barack Obama's middle name is in honor of his grandfather, Hussein, a secular resident of Nairobi. Americans may think of Saddam Hussein when they hear the name, but that is like thinking of Stalin when you hear the name Joseph. There have been lots of Husseins in history, from the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, a hero who touched the historian Gibbon, to King Hussein of Jordan, one of America's most steadfast allies in the 20th century. The author of the beloved American novel, The Kite Runner, is Khaled Hosseini.

"But in Obama's case, it is just a reference to his grandfather.

"....So, anyway, Obama's first two names mean "Blessing, the Good." If we are lucky enough to get him for president, we can only hope that his names are prophetic for us."

I don't speak Arabic, but I can give you the meaning of the name "Hussein." It means "handsome one" and is also the name of King Hussein of Jordan.

Some right-wingers are worse than school children. It's too bad that the RNC has to play the mother role.

Well, it has already started. Can't say this because Barack might get a little miffed. Why doesn't he just say, hey...it's my name, I'm proud of it and you can use it anytime you want. Political correctness. No pride but a chip on the shoulder as big as all outdoors.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:29 PM on 02/28/2008

I'm confused. Who has a chip on his shoulder? Surely you don't mean Sen. Obama.

He's not the one going around telling people his name is off limits - he's pretty much stayed out of this fray to let the Republicans look stupid all by their lonesome.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:16 PM on 02/28/2008

You people let the Republicans destroy Hillary Clinton and even helped. Just sit back and reap what you have sown.

You allowed Jesse Jackson, Jr. to strongarm that poor old Black man who was true to lifelong friends. He stated his decision to deny Hillary Clinton was harder than marching with Dr. King and being subjected to beatings. The local Party Machine is running a younger candidate against him because he was supporting Hillary Clinton. This is politics as usual.

He is sending a cry for help to those of you who really care for those like him who set the stage for an African-American to run for President of the United States. He obviously does not think Obama is the right one for this time.

Did you ever wonder why Obama has to destroy his opponents in order to win an election? Come away from your idol worship and realize his cult like followers are destroying the generation that has allowed you to be "young college educated first-time voters."

The "right one" for this time? who is the right one will there ever be a right one? and this time, when? if not now. Also people keep forgetting that Obama's mother was white.

What's this "you people" shit?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:31 PM on 02/28/2008

repeating this but:

My idea: demystify the words by rendering them harmless. Be proactive. We say "there's nothing wrong with the name Hussein (means handsome in Arabic) but there is something wrong with race baiting and fear mongering in a political campaign." I love the name Hussein it's as common as "Dave" or "Bob" Barack Bob Obama ;)

This is how the game is played. Someone makes a nasty comment or accusation against a Democrat. Could be this Hussein flap. Could be the swift boaters with Kerry. The source of the attack is not what matters. What matters is that the news media plays it over and over and over again to millions. The news media discusses the attack, even occasionally ridicules it. But the whole goal was to get it into the news media in the first place. These attacks get millions in free advertising. The swift boat ads cost $100k to run but the media turned it into $100 million in free advertising and it crushed Kerry.

The news media hates Democrats. They use every trick in the book to go after our candidates. This is pure propaganda. Look at what these same assholes did with Iraq. With the shameless pumping of real estate, which got millions hurt. The news media is this country is SLIME.

Did anyone listen to Sam Seder today in for Randi Rhodes on Air America? One of his first callers was a woman, sounded about 50-60 years old. She said, no lie, she gets a 'sinking feeling' in her stomach every time she sees Sen. Obama, because she believes he is a member or funded by Al Queda! Seder said he let her continue to rant because he wanted to let us hear what we were up against.

It was very disturbing to me, I realize people are stupid, but I never realized this level of ignorance existed with someone who could figure out how to dial a phone. My confidence for November took a big hit today.

It looks like that HuffPost just blocked one of my posts which was (very politely) critical of their new policy of "approving" every comment.

I had used that as a test.

If this is what the new HuffPost is going to be, I don't know if I'll be intersted in posting comments, or even reading comments that have passed some arbitrary approval process.

HuffPost, show some guts and class, and let this comment appear.

Thank you.

While I'm getting the same treatment, In defense of HuffPost, I myself have flagged several comments containing "There will never be a N-word in the White House.", only they didn't use "N-word". With Senator Obama close to clinching the nomination, It will only get worse, since a person of color in the White House is the RNC's worst nightmare.

"... in a recent press release questioning the Illinois senator's commitment to Israel"

----------

And I question the commitment of Bush, Cheney and McCain to America. Why are they so eager to get our soldiers killed in wars that benefit only oil corporations and some defense contractors?

And why are they so intent on continuing this farud that has already cost us more that $1.6 trillion?
