The Movement For Minimalist Make-Up Is Growing!

We were tickled to see that Fashionista.com is getting on-board with the movement for minimal make-up:

I was complaining about my skin a couple of weeks ago and Natalie screamed, "Stop wearing makeup!"

I laughed as she rambled about how much make-up she wore circa 1998, when she finally stopped cold turkey (she resumed a year later after everything on her face calmed down.) Apparently, if I wanted my skin to clear up I had to stop covering it up.

Since Natalie's skin literally glows, I took the challenge and I haven't worn face makeup in two weeks, (I have, however, been wearing extra mascara to make up for it), and voila, my skin is clearer than it's been since 1998.

Last week blogger Verena von Pfetten declared that "less is the new more" based on our concern that heavy make-up makes beautiful women like Sports Illustrated swimsuit model Marisa Miller and Lindsay Lohan look old. (Not that there's anything wrong with being old, but it's just nice to come to it naturally.)

As a makeup artist for almost two decades, I know for a fact that the "no make up" look many espouse takes a lot of makeup to produce: many shades of beige and brown, peach and taupe. It takes more care, actually, than say a red lipstick thrown on with a bit of mascara.

I remember when this "no makeup" look first came on the scene: early 90s with Ultima's line called "the Nakeds" and then, Bobby Brown. She told everyone they look good in brown.... sorry, but not true. People can look good in all kinds of colors and just because it is brown does not mean it is not artifice... of course it is!
What is most disturbing to me out of all the "no makeup" discussion is this denial of fun. That's why I got into it as a profession... believe it or not... not to push product, not to push identity and certainly not to make me or someone else attractive to men (because they are all different). I got into it for the temporary fun. Green one day, blue the next, and none of the committment that tattoos insist upon.

Makeup does not have to be about "covering" every circle or line. Sorry if companies prey on all our insecurties... I know they do. But just because you wear it, doesn't mean you're insecure. Are you insecure if you are a short person who wears heels? I think it's a shame that the fun is erased out of it. For some reason, no makeup seems to be part of this strident Feminist agenda. And I say this being a very strident feminist!
I do recall young radical women telling me "you look great without that crap on your face" when they saw me without it in the 70s. They didn't get it. I was a punk and enjoyed the paint. The makeup was actually pushing the envelope a lot more than they were. Plus their men seemed very happy in having their nature women subservient to their causes.
Makeup was and still can be its own feminist act. Go ask Siousxie Sioux.

Huh? Your skin clears up when you stop smearing pigmented goop on it? That makes no sense at all!! Next you'll try to tell me that if you don't stick your fingers in an electrical socket, you won't get a shock!!

IMHO, makeup stinks and looks cheap. It poorly compensates for women's unattractive skin caused by unhealthy diets, smoking, unrestricted sex, and other bad habits of low class people.

Unrestricted sex is great for the complexion - makes it fresh and glowing.

I hate the practice of women painting their lips bigger than they really are, i.e., painting the skin around their lips with lipstick, and I will not date such a woman.

I'm a man who loves women with make up. I absolutly adore it. I can't help it, its just one of my fetishes. If there is a movement of women denouncing make-up and heavy "made-up" faces dissapear from the street I will be upset. I'll have to wear it myself then I guess, and just look at the mirror all day remembering the good old days.

An interesting idea which would not sell many magazines I think. The photo of the Asian model
might look like less make-up, but it takes time to achieve this simple look. I don't think it is very,
heavy on airbrushing. It depends on the make-up artist. It won't be successful in America I think, just
look at your TV stars and newscasters, as a prime example.

It's alright for women who have an even skin tone to go without make - up but what about the many
that don't ?

As an alternative there is aways mineral powder foundation, which doesn't clog the pores. I'm happy
to say that my husband prefers me without any,and that counts more than any movement.

And we cannot even begin to assess the dangers posed by hair color. American women must develop an appreciation and respect for silver/gray/white hair. Our health and well-being depends on it.

If a casual glance reveals to someone that you're wearing makeup, you're wearing too much.

Haven't ever worn make-up. (except for some lipstick long, long ago) I'm 63. I'm happy as I am. People say I have lovely skin. Yeah... it's all natural! I intend to simply age. I'm sure I've saved a fortune too.

And say no to face lifts as well. I've seen too many face-lifts that look like a mask.

I'm 60 and I wear makeup, I look better with makeup. I have used skin care cream all of my life and I have great skin without to much aging. I have stayed out of the sun, I'm a redhead can't tan anyway and my skin looks much younger than fried brown skins.

But the older you get the less you should wear. Heavy makeup ages you.
