Clinton Camp Throws Sink, Chairs, Table At Obama

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

February 29, 2008 02:32 PM

Earlier this week an aide to the Hillary Clinton campaign publicly predicted that a "kitchen sink" barrage of attacks would be launched at rival Barack Obama -- and the sound you hear today is precisely that of the sink, the flooring and perhaps the plumbing getting thrown around the room.

The first bang this morning was a Clinton campaign ad featuring images of children sleeping and a red phone beeping. A voice asks: "Who do you want answering the phone in the White House when it's 3 a.m. and something has happened in the world?" A studious-looking Clinton is seen diligently answering the call.

The new ad was just one of several attack strategies at the center of a lengthy conference call with reporters later in the day, in which Clinton aides took Obama to task on issues ranging from national security and NAFTA to his ties to indicted Chicago political insider Antoin Rezko.

The campaign operatives also engaged in some standard fiddling with expectations, arguing that if Obama failed to win all four states that vote on Tuesday -- Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island -- it would send troubling signals about "dissatisfaction with [his] campaign."

Speaking for well more than an hour, top Clinton aides Howard Wolfson, Mark Penn, and Phil Singer sounded a markedly aggressive tone. Wolfson lamented what he charged was media unwillingness, up to this point, to dig deeper into Obama's relationship to Rezko, whose federal corruption trial is scheduled to start on Monday.

"How many of you [on this call] know how many fundraisers Tony Rezko hosted for Sen. Obama?" he asked. "How many of you know how much he gave to Sen. Obama?" These were two among more than a dozen similar challenges put to the reporters on the call.

The Clinton camp also tried to draw attention to recent news reports that an aide to Obama had made contact with Canadian officials, assuring them that the senator's criticism of NAFTA was not as severe as he has been publicly suggesting during the campaign.

The Obama camp denied the story, saying no contact at any level had ever been made, but the Clinton aides pressed the attack.

"I've found the Obama campaign's response to this has been less than definitive," said Wolfson. "Has Austan Goolsbee [the Obama aide] had any contact with anyone in the Canadian government or embassy to tell them that Sen. Obama's criticism of NAFTA was not particularly sincere? This is a yes or no question."

Earlier in the day, Obama had addressed the new Clinton "3 am" television ad as well, saying: "It plays on people's fears to scare up votes... We've had a red phone moment. It was the decision to invade Iraq. And Sen. Clinton gave the wrong answer."

Once again, Clinton's aides jumped all over Obama's response. Insisting their work was not comparable to President Lyndon Johnson's famous 1964 "Daisy" advertisement, which suggested that the election of Barry Goldwater could trigger a nuclear war, they accused Obama of attempting to remove the issue of national security from the campaign debate.

"It is an absolute insult to the voters to suggest that a discussion of national security in this campaign constitutes fear mongering," said Wolfson. "National security is an essential part of every election, it is a essentially part of what the president does. If we can't talk about it during an election, when can we talk about it?"

Added Penn: "It is not playing on people's fears, it is putting before people one of two central questions, who do you think is ready to be commander in chief and who do you think is best for the economy?"

On the conference call, anger and accusations were certainly in abundance. But so too was standard-issue campaign spin. The Clinton camp, playing off of a memo it had sent to reporters earlier in the day, insisted that if Obama was unable to pull off a four-for-four day in Tuesday's primary, it would signal "buyer's remorse" with his candidacy as well as "interest in having this campaign go on, at least to Pennsylvania" (which votes on April 7).

("There's a problem" if Obama doesn't sweep the March 4th contests, the memo states. "Democrats, the majority of whom have favored Hillary in the primary contests held to date, have their doubts about Senator Obama, and are having second thoughts about him as a prospective standard-bearer.")

One reporter asked whether this line of reasoning was a departure from comments made earlier in the week by Bill Clinton, who said that his wife had to win both Ohio and Texas to secure the nomination. No, said Wolfson, before adding that he would never question the judgment of the former president.

Asked another reporter: What would the message be if Obama won every state but Rhode Island (where Clinton holds a sizable lead in the polls)? Would that, too, be a sign of Democratic unease?

"I don't anticipate that that will be an outcome," said Wolfson. "I'm much more optimistic than that scenario being presented."

SAN ANTONIO, Texas (AP) " Barack Obama's senior economic policy adviser privately told Canadian officials to view the debate in Ohio over trade as "political positioning," according to a memo obtained by The Associated Press that was rejected by the adviser and held up Monday as evidence of doublespeak by rival Hillary Rodham Clinton.

The memo is the first documentation to emerge publicly out of the meeting between the adviser, Austan Goolsbee, and officials with the Canadian consulate in Chicago, but Goolsbee said it misinterprets what he told them. The memo was written by Joseph DeMora, who works for the consulate and attended the meeting.

"Noting anxiety among many U.S. domestic audiences about the U.S. economic outlook, Goolsbee candidly acknowledged the protectionist sentiment that has emerged, particularly in the Midwest, during the primary campaign," the memo said. "He cautioned that this messaging should not be taken out of context and should be viewed as more about political positioning than a clear articulation of policy plans."

The validity of this article was borne out this morning in a short viewing of MSNBC"s Morning Joe show. First, Joe Scarborough began by saying that Hillary should not drop out no matter what happens tomorrow; then Mika Brezinski misquoted Bill Richardson, saying that he said that whoever won tomorrow should get the nomination (he said whoever is ahead in delegates after tomorrow should be the nominee, and that will certainly be Obama); then Craig Crawford came on to echo Scarborough, saying that Hillary should stay in no matter what; then they have Howard Wolfson came on to trash Obama; then, when it is finally time for an Obama supporter, who do they have on but JESSE JACKSON, who many of the white moderate voters that Obama needs in Ohio and Texas thoroughly dislike! All this from the network that is supposed to be in the tank for Obama! Perhaps this folding under the Clinton spin or perhaps MSNBC has made a business decision that it is in their interest for the Democratic race to drag out. In either case, I am tuning in to a morning show with more integrity"Don Imus.

I live in Texas. I've gotten no less than a dozen automated calls from the Clinton campaign. Hillary - Bill -- Hillary -- somebody else -- Bill, etc.

Meanwhile, I've gone to several Obama meetings & events for my area with very high attendance. Actual volunteers have walked my neighborhood with information on Obama. Real volunteers have called my home.

With all due respect to Sen. Clinton, she polarizes this part of the country. The very mention of her name sends my right-leaning and independent friends into apoplexy.

Obama, on the other hand, attracts the disillusioned, the apathetic, and those new to politics. He has a broader appearl. I know several Republicans who are crossing party lines to vote for him in the primary.

We despearately need change in the federal gov't. We need a president who can represent the majority of Americans who are neither far left nor far right.

Obama's the one.

Sursum, You're right on the money...the last thing that we need is another four years of excrucriating investigations checking into the conduct of the Clintons with fine toothed comb. The time for that is NOW, before the Democratic party regains the White House only to lose it again in disgrace...because of the Clintons. The 64 million dollar question is why aren't the hard questions being asked RIGHT now, and answers for them DEMANDED. "Hillary, where are your 2006 tax returns?--The American people need transparency and they need it now." With Hillary's Arkansas cattle futures and Bill's Kazahhstan connections, those tax returns are mandatory viewing. "60 Minutes", where are you?

With all of that notwithstanding, we do desperately need change. Hillary Clinton has not only polarized Texas, she has the potential to polarize our entire nation if she isn't stopped tomorrow in Ohio, Texas, Rhode Island and Vermont.

Respectfully, Portia, my point is that I am personally witnessing people taking action and getting involved in the political process in a way that I have not seen in many years, perhaps never. I'm from the boomer generation, lest you think I don't have enough years of experience to make that kind of assessment.

They are taking action and getting involved because the see in Obama a fresh voice, someone who's got enough experience in Washington to know his way around, but not so much experience there that he's tainted, jaded and in deeply in political debt to special interests. It's time to turn the page, not go backwards in time.

Obama was booed yesterday in Ohio.

Actually, if you watch the clip, you'll see that the audience was booing what Clinton had said when she was speaking at the same location a few days earlier. They booed when Obama mentioned it, in agreement with him.

Susan1968--That all may be well and good, but please provide a valid reason why Hillary Clinton failed to read the NIE prior to voting on the measure to allow force against Iraq. There simply is no excuse, for after all, Ms. Clinton was indeed a sitting US Senator whose responsibility it was to be fully informed via all available information at her disposal. It is simply inexcusable that she would vote to authorize force without even having scanned the NIE...Again, a question of judgment.

No one reads everything. They wouldn't have time to read it all. They have staff to read and condense it for them. Obama would have had the same thing if he had been a US Senator at the time. It's the way it's done.

The Clinton Strategy: Muddy up the waters as much as possible. Hang in there until PA even though she will not catch up in delegate count. Concede the primary and ask all to unite. Wait for Obama to lose because she has given the right all the ammunition needed and then procede to campaign for 2012.

The most glaring presumption of your argument of course, is that there will actually be a presidency of the United States for Hillary to run for 2012 if McBush gets into the white house in 2009.

deb3mscapecod, I hope you're wrong. For those who are passionate about reproductive rights for women and choice, check this out...One more strategy of Hillary's campaign that needs to get out there...Lorna Brett Howard, former president of Chicago NOW has defected from Hillary's campaign and is now supporting Barack Obama. Reason? Hillary's blatant misrepresentation to New Hampshire voters at a Pro-Choice rally that Obama is weak on Choice...Take the time to check out this link...it is VERY important not only to show how Hillary will manipulate information relative to an issue that we care deeply about, but the ease with which she deceives.

From the Washington Post:

THERE'S THE BEEF
"During the course of our endless presidential campaigns, lots of silly things are said by the candidates and the press. But few are more ridiculous than the idea that Barack Obama is just an empty suit."

"We're talking here about a former president of the Harvard Law Review. Have you ever met the people who get into Harvard Law School? You might not choose them as friends or lovers or godparents to your children, but -- trust me on this -- there aren't many lightweights there. And Obama was chosen by all the other overachievers as top dog. Compared with the current leader of the free world, this guy is Albert Einstein."

If one backs away a little from all the media and other hype, a little perspective will reveal that Senator Hillary Clinton is one of the most outstanding women in American history. I am therefore impressed with the ability of Rove and the GOP to manipulate the Obama camp and supporters, along with the media, to repeat the GOP talking points and negative campaign about her and President Clinton. You"ve got to give "em credit.

Shrillary Clinton will go down in history as having run a filthy campaign. She will be remembered as a liar, manipulator and all around phony. The primary is tomorrow. She's due to cry any minute!
As for the booing in Ohio, it was in response to Hillary's fear ad. I'm also thinking Hillary talking about the red phone ringing in the White House at 3, 5,12 or whenever leaves her awfully open to late night humor. The call just might not be for her!

The fact remains that Obama is / was the underdog coming into the Texas and Ohio primaries. It's Clinton who has had 11 straight losses, and it is voter dissatisfaction is with her - she was the front-runner and "inevitable queen to be" who has steadily gone down in the polls. We are not fooled Clinton camp - it you who the voters are not satisfied with - with your negative childish campaign tactics. It's ridiculous to try and raise expectations on Obama when he is the underdog- and yet if he wins what an amazing outcome that would be!

I'm a night person, so if that ad means Hill will be taking the graveyard shift at the White House switchboard, she may finally be selling something I'd consider buying. The first thing I'd want to talk to her about is the laugh. That can't be good for the moral of the troops, can it? And how is it any less scary to kids than the Dean scream?

Sorry, I don't need to get into all that here. The point is just that we'll have plenty to chat about.

Just in case anyone has forgotten:

1) Hillary still won"t release her tax returns.
2) Hillary repeatedly denies knowing what BET"s Johnson meant with his innuendos, but then later apologizes for his remarks.
3) Hillary plays the race card by belittling Dr. King"s accomplishments and stating that Lyndon Johnson did more for the Civil Rights cause than King did.
4) Cynically explains away her loss in S.C. saying, "Jesse Jackson won South Carolina, too." Actually Bill gets credit for that one.
5) Threatens to sue Texas over it"s primary system.
6) Says she never praised NAFTA even though she did so in her own memoir.
7) Demands that Michigan and Florida delegates be counted even though she agreed that they should not and her name was the only one on the Michigan ballot.
8) Hillary cries TWICE. Both times conveniently the day before a big primary.
9) Releases a "Fearmongering" ad about keeping our children safe.
10) Releases a picture of Obama in traditional African garb to Drudge then denies it.
11) Literally runs her campaign into the ground financially and has to loan it 5 million.
12) Is currently being tried for fraud in Los Angeles.
13) Said that caucus states are unfair to women and that"s why she loses them.
14) Fakes getting angry about mailers two weeks after they were released. "Shame on you, Obaaama!!!" Ucch.
15) Cheap shots Obama with Xerox line then steals Edwards closing remarks in the same debate in Texas.
16) Plays the "woman card" during the last debate in Ohio saying it would be great to have a woman in the White House.
17) Embarrasses herself mocking Obama in a campaign rally.
18) "Obama is a fairytale," line. Actually Bill gets credit for that one, too.
19) "See? Obama loves Ronald Reagan! He just said so!" Not.
20) Complains about getting first debate questions and references SNL during a national debate when complaining about media bias.
21) Reject vs. Denounce tantrum.
22) Kept a check from a corporation that has been on trial for years regarding over 100 sexual harassment complaints.
23) Now says that if Obama does not sweep all four states on Tuesday than something is wrong with his campaign.
24) And finally, Hillary STILL STILL won"t release her tax returns.

Bullseye. Hillary's campaign tactics and lack of personal integrity on the tax returns, loan and corporate donations issues have revealed her true character to be more akin to Nixon, Haldeman, Shrub, Rove and every shill of their ilk than to any true statesman. Thanks for nothing, Sen. Clinton.

And suddenly all the msnbc whackys (not Keith) are saying no matter what happens she should stay in.....ratings? I'm thinking yes, but all she needs is a little encouragement. What, I wonder would she, Bill or the pundits almighty be saying had Obama lost 11 in a row even if he could eke out a win in one of four states? I hope fervently that enough people that were not previously offended by her royal meaness heard her slick denial on 60 minutes.
How nice for her to take him at his word....I take her word that she had nothing to do with Vince Foster and Bill at his word that he didn't have sex w/ that woman, Ms. Lewinsky. I found those innuendos equally disgusting and one would hope that the Clintons would be the last to throw stones.
I have never missed an election since being old enough to vote. Should she steal this nomination this yellow dog dem won't vote mcrazy or the other crazy and I will ABSOLUTELY not vote for Shrillary.

Do we notice now that it's about the campaign, and not about the issues of importance? Hillary will try to base her "comeback" on sheer chutzpah. There's nothing of substance. It's becoming fear-based. Clinton is taking a sorry, vacuous position, but in doing so, she's making a move to control the debate. She says this ridiculous thing to control the debate. It's good that it's a stupid thing to say, because something stupid gets everyone's attention.

This is why she hired Mark Penn.

If she succeeds with this tactic, she will anger everyone. Her followers won't even like it. It will be a hollow victory. It will be a victory for vanity. Then we'll vote for her because we'll HAVE TO.
