I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Hillary Clinton

Earlier this week an aide to the Hillary Clinton campaign publicly predicted that a "kitchen sink" barrage of attacks would be launched at rival Barack Obama -- and the sound you hear today is precisely that of the sink, the flooring and perhaps the plumbing getting thrown around the room.

The first bang this morning was a Clinton campaign ad featuring images of children sleeping and a red phone beeping. A voice asks: "Who do you want answering the phone in the White House when it's 3 a.m. and something has happened in the world?" A studious-looking Clinton is seen diligently answering the call.

The new ad was just one of several attack strategies at the center of a lengthy conference call with reporters later in the day, in which Clinton aides took Obama to task on issues ranging from national security and NAFTA to his ties to indicted Chicago political insider Antoin Rezko.

The campaign operatives also engaged in some standard fiddling with expectations, arguing that if Obama failed to win all four states that vote on Tuesday -- Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island -- it would send troubling signals about "dissatisfaction with [his] campaign."

Speaking for well more than an hour, top Clinton aides Howard Wolfson, Mark Penn, and Phil Singer sounded a markedly aggressive tone. Wolfson lamented what he charged was media unwillingness, up to this point, to dig deeper into Obama's relationship to Rezko, whose federal corruption trial is scheduled to start on Monday.

"How many of you [on this call] know how many fundraisers Tony Rezko hosted for Sen. Obama?" he asked. "How many of you know how much he gave to Sen. Obama?" These were two among more than a dozen similar challenges put to the reporters on the call.

The Clinton camp also tried to draw attention to recent news reports that an aide to Obama had made contact with Canadian officials, assuring them that the senator's criticism of NAFTA was not as severe as he has been publicly suggesting during the campaign.

The Obama camp denied the story, saying no contact at any level had ever been made, but the Clinton aides pressed the attack.

Story continues below
advertisement

"I've found the Obama campaign's response to this has been less than definitive," said Wolfson. "Has Austan Goolsbee [the Obama aide] had any contact with anyone in the Canadian government or embassy to tell them that Sen. Obama's criticism of NAFTA was not particularly sincere? This is a yes or no question."

Earlier in the day, Obama had addressed the new Clinton "3 am" television ad as well, saying: "It plays on people's fears to scare up votes... We've had a red phone moment. It was the decision to invade Iraq. And Sen. Clinton gave the wrong answer."

Once again, Clinton's aides jumped all over Obama's response. Insisting their work was not comparable to President Lyndon Johnson's famous 1964 "Daisy" advertisement, which suggested that the election of Barry Goldwater could trigger a nuclear war, they accused Obama of attempting to remove the issue of national security from the campaign debate.

"It is an absolute insult to the voters to suggest that a discussion of national security in this campaign constitutes fear mongering," said Wolfson. "National security is an essential part of every election, it is a essentially part of what the president does. If we can't talk about it during an election, when can we talk about it?"

Added Penn: "It is not playing on people's fears, it is putting before people one of two central questions, who do you think is ready to be commander in chief and who do you think is best for the economy?"

On the conference call, anger and accusations were certainly in abundance. But so too was standard-issue campaign spin. The Clinton camp, playing off of a memo it had sent to reporters earlier in the day, insisted that if Obama was unable to pull off a four-for-four day in Tuesday's primary, it would signal "buyer's remorse" with his candidacy as well as "interest in having this campaign go on, at least to Pennsylvania" (which votes on April 7).

("There's a problem" if Obama doesn't sweep the March 4th contests, the memo states. "Democrats, the majority of whom have favored Hillary in the primary contests held to date, have their doubts about Senator Obama, and are having second thoughts about him as a prospective standard-bearer.")

One reporter asked whether this line of reasoning was a departure from comments made earlier in the week by Bill Clinton, who said that his wife had to win both Ohio and Texas to secure the nomination. No, said Wolfson, before adding that he would never question the judgment of the former president.

Asked another reporter: What would the message be if Obama won every state but Rhode Island (where Clinton holds a sizable lead in the polls)? Would that, too, be a sign of Democratic unease?

"I don't anticipate that that will be an outcome," said Wolfson. "I'm much more optimistic than that scenario being presented."

CLINTON CAMP THROWS SINK, CHAIRS, TABLE AT OBAMA

What kind of headline garbage is that?
It shows and betrays your prejudice and tabloid-like attitude toward Senator Clinton.
It gives a false impression that the Clinton camp is crazy.
Your too much editoralizing of news is intolerable and does not speak well of you as a columnist.
Your commentary violates the journalistic principle of decency and fairplay.
Why cant you just be straight to the point without using dirty verbs and adjectives?
People who are appalled by your headline garbage are poisoned by your polluted blog.

"In a perfect world, Obama might have a little more [experience], maybe even some service in uniform," Gen. Merrill A. "Tony" McPeak, said in the interview.

"But like I used to tell John McCain: You don't get to be a hero by getting shot down, you get to be a hero by shooting the other guy down."

Hilary is counting on the vote from those that slept through 2002 when she supported Bush's drive to war in Iraq. If we have anything to fear, its Hillary's lack of courage to stand up when it counts.

Hillary failed the most important test in the last 2 decades, if not longer.

In war you don't get to retake the exam.

I may have missed it, so this is a question: has anybody seen Obama ads, or heard in Obama speeches, or read articles by any of his staff, about Clinton's fundraiser Norman Hsu, sentenced to three years? Or about Bill Clinton's paid-for pardons, or about turning the White House into a top dollar motel for big donors, while Hillary was getting her experience as lady of the house? Has Obama talked about, or has anybody written about Hillary's cute little smile while throwing her garbage? Not yet? It did take a long time for the press to start noting Bush's cute little smirk. In the beginning of his campaign, Obama was criticized for not being feisty enough. I hope he knows what he is doing now, in sticking to the high road.

"I mean this is an INTERNATIONAL faux pas, big time, and has demonstrated to Canada and other US Allies that Obama speaks out of both sides of his mouth and will do anything to win; and even has the GALL to admit it!! How on earth can any nation rely on Obama's word now?"

A little perspective. I don't know the particulars of what REALLY happened, but I'll assume your assumptions are correct.

1) The fact that there is a discrepancy between the official public line and back channel discussions is a fact of life in ALL sizable organizations, for a variety of reasons, not all of which are nefarious. I say this as an Obama supporter who has worked as a corporate executive and then small business owner over the past two decades.

2) If you stuck around after the last debate (in OH, on MSNBC) , you would have heard Chris Matthews, Andrea Mitchell, David Gergen? and...Pat Robertson? discuss the fact none of the power elites in either party TRULY believes that NAFTA is horribly off-target, which is not true but for a little thing I'll call the global power structure. It would take long-term, truly Herculean to essentially re-establish the strength of the unions, expand them throughout the blue and white collar workforce, export them globally and enforce them.

The difference between power elites opn the left and the right is that the latter wants less regulation while the left would like environmental protection standards and labor standards to level the playing field, prevent globalization from ultimately driving every job below a living wage, and ensure human/labor rights. The candidates know of course, that these face stiff opposition from multinational corporations, and enforcability will be dubious.

[Which means that, in this area and to some degree at least, both Hillary and Obama are posing as populists for the votes in industries facing stiff international competition and real threats of outsourcing and offshoring. Hillary by pretending she never supported NAFTA, and Obama by claiming he doesn't support NAFTA].

That's my take.

You know this is crap. If you want juicy news--------listen to this. Hillary took 170,000.00 from a illnoise consulting firm accused by the Fed's of Sexual harrassment, assualt and degradeing women. She refuse's to give the money back, even after the story broke. Yet, women says "Hillary will stand up for our rights"! Man what is that all about. Women who vote Hillary, support her also might as well bse saying It's ok she take's donation from a firm that sexually assualt, harrass, and degrade's women. Man how wrong is that? You'd think men would support a man who raped women like thier mom, sister and aunts? of course not! Shame on Hillary. Her hands get dirtier every day in this campagne.

With all due respect , have you ever seen another supposedly billiant couple, who have consistantly, through bad judgement, put themselves in so many embarrassing situations? I'll spare you the itemization of all of the gufaws that they have made over the years because they are so well known, until it would just be redundant to list them here. But with that being said, I believe that these people need prayer, to break the jinx that has haunted them from the very beginning of their careers in public life. It seems that they have made one bad dicision after another. And It is becoming embarassing to and even depressing to have to witness them continue to have to go through all of this public humiliation like thay have for all of these years. The Monica senerio should have prompted them to culminate this, their debacle once and for all!

ENOUGH ALREADY!

Your take is that you will swallow a minnow and call it a WHALE! That is your take. Your take is that you take hate and attempt to disguise it with words. That is your take. Your take is that you suck intellectual trash from the gutter and call it brain food. That is your take. Your take is that if you sell this gutter food on the internet, knowing it is false, you will confuse one human being, and cause that person to not vote for Obama. That is your take.

In polite parlance you bring to the body politic a cesspool of neo-con elitist thinking, completely in line with Limbaugh, Coulter, and their cronies. We know who you are and we know how you think. That is my take.

The proof is in the pudding. Instead of yapping innuendoes all over the place - provide solid proof of anything against Obama. If the Clinton camp had it, it would be out for sure. Now, can we say the same thing about Hilary? She's just lucky she happens to be running against a gentleman who chooses to fight her on the "serious" issues. She will never get away with it when faced against the Republicans.

I think Hillary Clinton took Billy Crystal's advice, "use the fear factor". I'm very curious to see if this poltical ploy works. The fear card has worked in the pass, and the Bush administration is proof of that. If it does work, it tells me that the American people are not really looking for change. Hence, we vote for someone because we are scared of no certain outcome. The fear factor (also known as "national security") will hurt both Barack Obama or Hillary Clinton. Because John McCain has more military experience than both Hillary or Obama. However, if Mrs. Clinton's political ad does not work, it won't be very effective for the Republicans to use it in the general. We'll see March 4th.

McCain has dug his own grave with his 'bomb bomb Iran' video, his '100 year' war in Iraq, and even his acceptance of support from the anti-Catholic minister. Look for this trend to continue.

Polls still show Americans disklike the Iraq war. One good thing that has come out of the W presidency is that he helped to wake up some of the sleeping center of our electorate. Yes, they want change.

I doubt Clinton's new commercial will gain her anything. I think it may actually hurt her. It seems a bit silly to hear that phone ringing so long and her awake at 3am to answer it. She doesn't have the experience people want to deal with crises anyway.

They act as if there hasn't been any process of growth in the last months since they have been on the trail. A lot of issues have been discussed across America because of who is running and more often then not Clinton has been on the mechanical, immature, elite side of the debate while Obama a more evaluative and collective side. His depth on the issues is evident in the papers he has released. Clinton is jargon, talk, walk and shoe polish.

The Democratic Party cannot win the Presidential Election without Hillary Clinton.

Americans love hypocrisy and Barack Obama is preaching it as the New Gospel of Change.

Who is fooling whom?

Marc Cooper said it was the end of theClinton Era and we raised over $35 million in February.
Even the former aides of the Clintons now working for Barack Obama know that 2008 will not be the end of the Clinton Era.

If Senator John McCain at 71 is the presidential nominee of the Republicans and majority of young Republicans are voting for him, then only an "ignoramus" will be fooled by the lies of the anti-Clinton cult who smell like anti-christs to me.
Jesus Christ warned us that the anti-christ will come in the form of an angel of light promising a better alternative.

Barack Obama's most recent letter to the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender/Transsexual people (LGBT) population reads like a message from the anti-christ.

If she thought Obama wouldn't treat her gay community right, she'd be jumping ship to Hillary----------and preaching loudly against Obama. She's no wall flower, if she has some thing to say, she don't care if you want to hear it or not------she's going to say it. So peddle your non-sense some where alse--------------or get up to speed. Ellen would be screaming from the roof tops against Obama if she thought he'd hurt them in any way. ANTI-CHRIST? Your did you come from. Obama far from perfect------they know it---------He's just the best choice. You need a reality check.

Let's get off the "anti-Christ" stuff. It's not the literal translation that's important, it's the logic. Based upon the given biblical definitions of anti-Christ, there can be, and are, many, probably millions of anti-Christs. So don't hang it on the Clintons. With a little thought, there are many others who are more well-qualified for the dubious title.

That said, on to Obama: it's the public, and its discourse, that created a vacuum that Obama filled. He's here because he sensed the mood of the country correctly. And for once, a social and political movement has a rare energizing feel to it. And luckily, we need it.

Personally, I would like to see more dialogue between the two dem candidates about the issues ! I'm sick of the attack adds . So far , neither of the two have convinced me to vote for them. Hillary is beginning to act as angry as mccain. Obama says he has a foreign policy , but , as yet , he hasnt said specifically what it is . Remember , they can promise to do all sorts of things , but , what can they actually get done , once in office ?With this current congress , it doeant seem to me , that anything will get done , other than , the same ole same ole .

I think it's about bloody time Hillary is expressing her anger. After the garbage she's had strewn at her and said about her and the lies Obama and the media have had no problem spouting, she has every right to be thoroughly disgusted. I know the rest of the world is wondering why the American Press is concealing Obama's distortions of the truth; why they aren't even discussing his call to Canada - telling the Canadians that anything he said should be considered "Political Rhetoric" etc.... I mean this is an INTERNATIONAL faux pas, big time, and has demonstrated to Canada and other US Allies that Obama speaks out of both sides of his mouth and will do anything to win; and even has the GALL to admit it!! How on earth can any nation rely on Obama's word now? And the US Press has not said ONE WORD about it, other than to kill the story as quickly as possible!

I agree with you, that more dialogue would be great between the candidates. But the Press has not allowed that either! It's deplorable to say the least! the media bias against Hillary - and her grace - has certainly proven she is the only one qualified to be President. The FLUFF Obama spouts is just that Fluff and empty Political Rhetoric. He's conning the voter big time and laughs and brags about it to the Canadians to boot! Unreal!

Up to now, they just made a LOUSY JOB! Obama simply does it better. And, there's no law of the land stating that, Hillary would get the candidacy, only because she is a Clinton. She either deserves it - or not. And personally, I don't think she does.

If you were objective, you could not seriously make such a statement.

Here is some of the garbage that Hillary's campaign has thrown at Obama:

Obama's run is a fairy tale, Obama wasn't really against the war, Obama took cocaine, Obama's middle name is Hussein, Obama is like Jesse Jackson (they're both black, get it), Obama isn't pro-choice, Obama is for latte drinkers, Obama only wins caucuses, Obama only wins states that don't matter, Obama is all talk and no action, Obama is an empty suit, Obama plagiarizes, Obama's followers are a cult, Obama isn't ready on day one, Obama might cause or not be able to handle a terrorist attack, Obama shouldn't win because I am entitled even if it takes Michigan, Florida, and superdelegates.

Apparently, Hillary's high n' mighty position that SHE doesn't mislead or misrepresent has been called dramatically into question. I'm sure this has been mentioned already but, apparently, it is worth mentioning again: It was Bill Clinton who just a couple of weeks ago said very plainly and without equivocation that unless Hillary wins BOTH Texas AND Ohio, the race would be over for her.

Clinton and her campaign managers have gone postal.

This latest tactic to redefine the outcome of the upcoming primaries in Texas, Ohio, Rhode Island & Vermont so that Hillary can save face or feel justified in continuing is so pathetic.

I have really tried to remain civil in my comments here, but after so many lies coming from her camp-- enough is enough.

Hillary, you want to be nominated for President of the United States, but you still can't control those working on your campaign and that includes your husband.

This latest scheme is an obvious attempt to turn around the damage-- once again done by your better half, Bill Clinton, who told us last week that if you didn't win Texas AND Ohio, you were out.

Now, instead of just dealing, you and yours decide to put out this sad, desperate conjecture about Obama's results in the upcoming races.

This is so sad. Do you really believe, if you say it, that makes it true?

I was going to write my version of nasty comments, but have again decided that I won't go that route.

The Clintons are doing enough of that for all of us.

We the voters must choose the best candidate. Race and Gender are a non-issue.

Of course there will always be the dinosaurs who will vote for the white sclerotic male, even if that is Hitler. But they are a dying a breed. Evolution will take care of that.

If Ralph Nader had done ANYTHING of value or import in the past 8 years, people would be screaming for him to run for President.

Sort of like that other guy that everyone is screaming, PLEASE, run. What's his name? I think he won a few worldwide prizes for his work.

RO. "They" should just assure him we love him for OSHA and the EPA, give him a lifetime achievement award, commit him to a gated retirement home, tell him to stop spinning his wheels and take a GD rest.

We love you Ralph. Now leave us the **** alone.

I love it!!! The Hillary "camp" has gone off the wall! But, with their actions, one can see the actions of their mentors: "Tricky Dick" Nixon, Lee Atwater, Karl Rove, and "Poppy" & "Sonny Boy" Bush. There may also be some Lyndon B. Johnson thrown in for flavor. Whoever they are following, these are not nice guys in their style of doing politics, and "We The People" are sick and tired of it!!! We want to rid ourselves of this "Dirty Political Chicanery," and find someone to lead us, who can give us a more hopeful, intelligent, insightful method of reversing the extensive damage to our country from the ravages of George W. Bush and his political hack cronies, and moving us forward! Hillary Clinton cannot do that, because she stands for nothing, and is merely more of the same old, tired "politics as usual!"

Hahahahaha... Bill Clinton endorses Obama !
What a beaut. Ain't far-fetched too, Bill himself said that if voters were to choose between (change from the Washington political status quo) and so-called experience (of failure, divisiveness and negativity), change wins by a landslide.

I've been looking at some numbers, and here's a fun fact:

If Obama nets a mere 28 delegates out of March 4 (through any number of combinations: winning Texas by a bigger margin than Clinton wins Ohio for example), then Clinton would need to win EVERY REMAINING CONTEST 65-35 just to TIE Obama by the convention.

By 30 points. And that includes states like Montana, Mississippi, and North Carolina, which are going to go for Obama outright, or Pennsylvania, which no one has ever lead by that amount. If she wins Pennsylvania by the eye-popping 60-40, she will have actually have lost ground on him; she's now have to win every state after that my more than 30 points.

So that's what I'll be keeping my eye on - can he get 28 delegates out of these four states?

I'm going to drink some emergenc-C now.

WHAT ABOUT FLORIDA ? THESE DELEGATES ARE GOING TO HAVE TO BE COUNTED BEFORE THIS IS OVER. THERE WAS A RECORD NUMBER OF DEMOCATIC VOTERS IN FLORIDA WHO OVERWHELMINGLY CHOOSE CLINTON, AS DID NEW YORK & CALIFORNIA ETC.
AS FAR AS I'M CONCERNED THERE IS NO ORGANIZATION THAT HAS THE LEGAL STANDING TO CANCEL 3 MILLION VOTERS.
WITH FLORIDA GOING TO CLINTON,OBAMA IS THE ONE WHO NEEDS TO PLAY CATCH UP.

She's not going to get Florida or Michigan. If your side wants to get "LEGAL" then you should file suit and you will see which court will accept a lawsuit to settle an internal dispute within the Democratic Party. Maybe Judge Judy will be available.

I'm from Florida and I can tell you the record numbers turned out to vote on the state constitutional change to property taxes, not Hillary Clinton. Because a lot of the homeowners are older and more likely pro-Clinton, that helped her. If Obama had a chance to campaign in Florida (he was still mostly unknown to voters then), he would have dramatically changed the results of that election.

Even though I was mad as hell at the DNC for disallowing my vote, you will see a revolution occur in the Democratic party if Hillary wins because the DNC allowed votes in MI and FL to count NOW, after saying they would not AND ALL OF THE CANDIDATES AGREED TO ABIDE BY THE DECISION.

I am so tired of the Clintons trying to change the rules when it benefits them and I am so sorry I ever voted for Bill Clinton, knowing what I do now about them and their tactics.

If I feel this way about them as a long time Democrat, imagine what the Republicans and, more importantly, INDEPENDENTS think of the Clintons.

Let's all get real. Hillary Clinton cannot win in November. Obama can. People in the upcoming Democratic primaries should vote accordingly. Otherwise Hillary will try to hang on a few more weeks and cause much harm to Obama and the Democratic party's chances in November.

The Republicans are sitting back and laughing at how the Dems are trying to shoot themselves in the collective foot.

What about Florida? And Michigan too for that matter?

Speaking as a Florida resident --- Although I took the time to go vote in the beauty contest primary, my personal take is that I knew full well that the vote was not to count and that a future primary or caucus would have to be arranged so that my state could be included at the convention. To go with the results as they stand is not a fair option.

According to turnout data for all the states that have voted so far this primary season, the Republican turnout has exceeded the Democratic turnout in ONLY 4 states so far:

1) Arizona --- home of native son McCain
2) Utah --- Spiritual "home" of Romney
3) Florida
4) Michigan

Surprised!?!?!?!?

As it goes so clearly against the trend of the completed contests and given the unsual circumstance, this is further data supporting the notiong that the Democratic vote in these two states was tempered by the expectation that the contests were meaningless.

A Do-Over is the ONLY solution!! That is the ONLY resolution that will preserve unity in the Democratic party.

If Clinton is so sure of her support in these states and is so concerned that all voters' rights are respected, PLEASE EXPLAIN TO ME WHAT HER ARGUMENT IS AGAINST A DO-OVER?????

Do you remember this phrase from your childhood? "You play according to the rules - or you don't play at all."

And the rules were very clear in Florida - even before ANY Floridian cast ANY vote in the democratic primaries:

a. Florida's votes would not be counted by the DP, because they had moved their primary (too) early;

b. No contestant would go and campaign in Florida.

c. Florida KNEW this would happen.

d. Hillary BROKE this accord.

And now you come and cry for, not only to let them get away with their fradulent behaviour, but even REWARD Florida and, Hillary for this clear and, deliberate violation of the rules everybody was free to either

e. follow; or

f. break - with all respective consequences being known to each side, too?

ARE YOU NUTS?

I've been tracking all the numbers myself since the beginning. So I like it too Brooklyn!

Let's say the pledged delegate count remains unchanged after March 4th. Obama is still 155 ahead (using realclearpolitics.com.)

There are only 611 pledged delegates left after March 4th. Clinton would have to take more than 62% of all remaining votes just to come even with Obama. The only state where she has ever received that much of the vote is Arkansas.

States remaining include North Carolina which is polling for Obama 10 points ahead. Take this into consideration, and Clinton has to win 67% of the other states.

It gets worse and worse from there for Clinton. She keeps thinking that if she gets to use FL and MI, and can convince enough superdelegates to vote for her, she could still pull it out. It's unbelievable to me.

Dee Dee Myers said on Russert's show this morning that she thinks Clinton will concede on Wednesday if she does not take Texas. I hope Dee Dee is correct.
