I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Hillary Clinton

Earlier this week an aide to the Hillary Clinton campaign publicly predicted that a "kitchen sink" barrage of attacks would be launched at rival Barack Obama -- and the sound you hear today is precisely that of the sink, the flooring and perhaps the plumbing getting thrown around the room.

The first bang this morning was a Clinton campaign ad featuring images of children sleeping and a red phone beeping. A voice asks: "Who do you want answering the phone in the White House when it's 3 a.m. and something has happened in the world?" A studious-looking Clinton is seen diligently answering the call.

The new ad was just one of several attack strategies at the center of a lengthy conference call with reporters later in the day, in which Clinton aides took Obama to task on issues ranging from national security and NAFTA to his ties to indicted Chicago political insider Antoin Rezko.

The campaign operatives also engaged in some standard fiddling with expectations, arguing that if Obama failed to win all four states that vote on Tuesday -- Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island -- it would send troubling signals about "dissatisfaction with [his] campaign."

Speaking for well more than an hour, top Clinton aides Howard Wolfson, Mark Penn, and Phil Singer sounded a markedly aggressive tone. Wolfson lamented what he charged was media unwillingness, up to this point, to dig deeper into Obama's relationship to Rezko, whose federal corruption trial is scheduled to start on Monday.

"How many of you [on this call] know how many fundraisers Tony Rezko hosted for Sen. Obama?" he asked. "How many of you know how much he gave to Sen. Obama?" These were two among more than a dozen similar challenges put to the reporters on the call.

The Clinton camp also tried to draw attention to recent news reports that an aide to Obama had made contact with Canadian officials, assuring them that the senator's criticism of NAFTA was not as severe as he has been publicly suggesting during the campaign.

The Obama camp denied the story, saying no contact at any level had ever been made, but the Clinton aides pressed the attack.

Story continues below

"I've found the Obama campaign's response to this has been less than definitive," said Wolfson. "Has Austan Goolsbee [the Obama aide] had any contact with anyone in the Canadian government or embassy to tell them that Sen. Obama's criticism of NAFTA was not particularly sincere? This is a yes or no question."

Earlier in the day, Obama had addressed the new Clinton "3 am" television ad as well, saying: "It plays on people's fears to scare up votes... We've had a red phone moment. It was the decision to invade Iraq. And Sen. Clinton gave the wrong answer."

Once again, Clinton's aides jumped all over Obama's response. Insisting their work was not comparable to President Lyndon Johnson's famous 1964 "Daisy" advertisement, which suggested that the election of Barry Goldwater could trigger a nuclear war, they accused Obama of attempting to remove the issue of national security from the campaign debate.

"It is an absolute insult to the voters to suggest that a discussion of national security in this campaign constitutes fear mongering," said Wolfson. "National security is an essential part of every election, it is a essentially part of what the president does. If we can't talk about it during an election, when can we talk about it?"

Added Penn: "It is not playing on people's fears, it is putting before people one of two central questions, who do you think is ready to be commander in chief and who do you think is best for the economy?"

On the conference call, anger and accusations were certainly in abundance. But so too was standard-issue campaign spin. The Clinton camp, playing off of a memo it had sent to reporters earlier in the day, insisted that if Obama was unable to pull off a four-for-four day in Tuesday's primary, it would signal "buyer's remorse" with his candidacy as well as "interest in having this campaign go on, at least to Pennsylvania" (which votes on April 7).

("There's a problem" if Obama doesn't sweep the March 4th contests, the memo states. "Democrats, the majority of whom have favored Hillary in the primary contests held to date, have their doubts about Senator Obama, and are having second thoughts about him as a prospective standard-bearer.")

One reporter asked whether this line of reasoning was a departure from comments made earlier in the week by Bill Clinton, who said that his wife had to win both Ohio and Texas to secure the nomination. No, said Wolfson, before adding that he would never question the judgment of the former president.

Asked another reporter: What would the message be if Obama won every state but Rhode Island (where Clinton holds a sizable lead in the polls)? Would that, too, be a sign of Democratic unease?

"I don't anticipate that that will be an outcome," said Wolfson. "I'm much more optimistic than that scenario being presented."

HILLARY YOU WERE NOT THE PRESIDENT- YOU WERE PROBABLY SLEEPING THROUGH SUCH CALLS!
Is she Delusional or does she actually think we buy her rhetoric adn imagery. In fact if she was making Presidential Decisions during her Husbands Terms I WANT TO KNOW!! I was not voting for her those 2x's! She has no Presidential expereince whats so ever- otherwise her Husband may be in real danger of ruining HIS Legacy. And Chelsea canscratch Politics off her list of 'To Do's"
I'm Hill's worst Political Nightmare- Female, natural born, European descent, married, 24 yr old daughter, college educated, small business owner whos' been a Dem all Her voting life- True Blue. In fact was thrilled when she won her Senate Seat- planned on being a avid supporter. But then she started voting and pandering and Double Speaking, and acting in unison with a corrupt Regime, Corporationists. Who I feel crowned her 'Queen' during her 'Luncheon' With W.
I was never a Hillary Hater or detractor until she not only failed her duty in th eSenate, but also on the Armed Services Committee. She's proven her Allegience, an dit is Not to US.

It's about time somebody commented on this 35 years of experience of Hillary Clinton. Since when does being married to a Governor or President count as experience? Does this mean that Laura Bush can use this argument to run for President citing her many years of experience? Does pillow talk count the same as real hands on experience? The real experienced candidates were Senators Biden and Dodd and Governor Richardson. If a job candidate cited being married to an executive on their resume they would be laughed at. In fact, the press has given her a free ride on accepting this nonsense. She is only a one term Senator just starting her second term. The presidency is an elective office not a hereditary one passed on to spouses and children.

There is no question she is intelligent and knows her stuff and it's time she ran on her own merits rather than her husband's. She also needs to stop looking so desperate. So what if she doesn't get the nomination. There will be other chances and she will get real experience based on her own accomplishments rather than her husband's. This "win at all costs" is destructive to both to her and the party.

Texas and Ohio, it's time to turn the page, send the Clintons back to New York.
This country needs to move forward, not backwards. She is playing the fear
factor just like the republicans.

The "Backlash" IN the Democratic Party is AGAINST the Clintons!!! The "Establishment" may be for them, but "THE PEOPLE" are AGAINST THEM!!!! If they attempt to STEAL their way into the nomination, the Democratic Party will be become the "DECIMATED Party", and it will lose the election in November!!! Democrats will stay home in record numbers, out of the RAGE they feel, and Independents, who already hate her, will vote for McCain!!! This is a no-win situation for the Clinton Camp! I sincerely hope that the Democratic Party "Powers-That-Be" understand, and heed these dynamics extremely well! There will be NO "Coming together for the sake of the Party" after the Convention, if the Clintons STEAL this election!!!!!!

To the people of Texas , Ohio and the US... Please do YOURSELVES a favor and do some homework on what Obama is really about. Go to CTVnew.com where he says loud and clear anything he's going to say about Nafta will be a lie. Go to obamatruth.org and find out how he REALLY feels about the sick and poor after he's tossed them into the streets. There are plenty of places to find out the FACTS about him. It's a crime that your news networks are denying the American voter the truth. But then again they did it with Bush twice so they know it works.

Maybe this time, you'll not allow yourselves to be fooled again. I sure hope not.

I call shenanigans.

CTV News notwithstanding, why would I go to any website that is bankrolled by K Street republicans, via the Republican Leadership Council, for any objective dissent on Barack Obama?

Or do you just think we're all that fucking dumb?

“Now one of Clinton’s laws of politics is this: If one candidate’s trying to scare you and the other one’s trying to get you to think, if one candidate’s appealing to your fears and the other one’s appealing to your hopes, you better vote for the person who wants you to think and hope.”

"How many of you [on this call] know how many fundraisers Tony Rezko hosted for Sen. Obama?" he asked. "How many of you know how much he gave to Sen. Obama?"

Doesn't this sound suspiciously out of the Republican's playbook? What if the answers are "none" and "nothing." Rather similar to the calls the Bushies made in SC in 2000 asking voters what they thought of McCain's black child. And by the way, where are HER tax returns? Why can't we have a peek-see at them? The other candidates were able to release THEIRS!

Ah yes, Clinton is the one with experience, all right.... but not the experience I want in a president. I'm sick of attack ads and slimy innuendos. This is NOT the woman I want to be the first female president.... she makes a mockery of all the good that women can and DO do....

Rhetoric questions are always a non-starter. Just ignore them. Rhetoric questions were invented by the Spanish Inquisition in the 16th Century to box and nail defecting heretics. But even if I was a defecting heretic myself - which I positively am - I will NEVER let someone inquire me with inquisitory methods, who pretends to have the right to inquire me. Everybody who starts asking rhetoric questions is simply an idiot who thinks he was Savonarola. I'll tell you a little secret: "He is not...!" QED. Good morning, America.

Here's an accurate assessment of the Rezko nonsense: http://www.buzzflash.com/articles/editorblog/056. The Chicago Tribune has been digging into the Rezko issue for years and has found all there's going to be found. I'm sure in the conference call the Clinton campaign neglected to tell you that the house deal -- the one potential for questions -- fell apart a few weeks ago. The sellers of the house confirmed that Rezko had nothing to do with the sale; there were offers and counteroffers like any other home sale between the sellers and the Obamas, and they got the best price for the house. There's no "there" there. But they'll allow it to fester. Because she can't win honestly. Even reports from the Republican Chicago Tribune has said there is no evidence of quid pro quo. None. Rezko threw money at everybody, hoping to get contracts out of it. And come on, people -- who survives Chicago politics and doesn't run into a dirty campaign donor like Rezko? If Obama has managed to keep it to Rezko, then he may be the messiah after all. Because that takes a miracle in Chicago.

If HIllary really wants to question the purity of every campaign donor, let's have at it. Let's look at all of her donors. And Bill's donors to the library and the foundation. If it's about digging by the press, why aren't they asking for those lists and the tax returns? Because we know how pure the Clinton donors have been in the past. Disgusting.

The lying Clinton campaign not only knows the Obama campaign denied the Canadian story, but SO DID THE CANADIAN EMBASSY. But their brittle, ethically challenged candidate cannot win on her own merits, (which are meager, when you strip out the Clinton name and her Senate seat that she won because of the Clinton name), so she channels Karl Rove and that's just dandy with her. It's not as if these people haven't been in the White House already for 8 years -- they have to run it like it's their own little fiefdom. How in the world is America even considering that Hillary is entitled to this office? When her own husband was a year younger when he was inaugurated, with ZERO foreign policy experience. And what is HIllary's, exactly? Going to state dinners as First Lady? Sure, a few years in the Senate. I'll give her that. But was she able to work across the aisle like Obama did with Lugar to deal with loose nukes and biological weapons? An issue that Bush ignored, Hillary did nothing about, and Obama was able to get through Congress and signed into law? One of the best national security pieces of legislation to come out of this despicable 7 years, and the one few pieces of national security legislation that actually did something without shredding the Constitution. What was Hillary doing that time? Proposing flag burning amendments, voting against bans on cluster bombs in civilian areas, was silent on torture before she was against it. She isn't even Bush-lite. She is Bush's foreign policy.

If she were to get elected, it would be nothing more than a continuation of the ugliness we have had to endure the last 7 years. That we've endured because of Bill's behavior that handed the election to Bush in 2000. I know, I know -- Gore and Kerry were the usual safe, solid, 10-point plan candidates and that's why we lost.

Safe, solid, 10-point plan candidate -- and we'll lose that way again.

Wake up, Democrats. Or we'll get the president we deserve.

Very well said. By the way, the target of the Rezko investigations going on is not Obama - it the the governor of Illinois. Obama has been cleared.

The Clintons are despicable in trying to slime Obama with things like this while she is hiding her tax returns, White House records and Clinton Library donors as there are things they don't want us to see. They act more like Republicans every day. Accuse your opponent of what you are doing.

It's time to end the Bush-Clinton-Bush-Clinton rein and move on to a better future.

She may win on Tuesday in Texas and Ohio, but Obama will hopefully still keep close (or ahead) in delegates.

I'm glad there are superdelegates, because if anything comes out (her tax returns...Bill...the library donors....various campaign lies) before the convention, there still can be a chance for Obama.

No matter what happens Tuesday for Clinton, no matter how she spins it, it's not going to be over for Obama.

Why are you sounding so depressive? We're ON! Obama will definitely win three, if not all four of next Tuesday's primaries/caucuses. The last 5-or-so caucusses have taught us that, the pollsters ALWAYS underestimated Omabas margin-of-victory by at least 10 percent. Following this trend, Obama is WAY up front, already.
And the strange way of calculating delegates in Texas will help Obama even more. I'd guess that, that Barack Obama will gain at least 100 delegates MORE than Hillary Clinton next Tuesday - come what may. So, why so shy?
Act up! Go Obama!

OBAMA'S MISSING RECORDS
"... the Obama camp has made no effort to assist investigators to look into his state records. In fact, Senator Obama has blithely claimed that his records have been thrown out. Chicago columnist Lynn Sweet reports that Obama, who has called for "transparency in government" from his rivals, is not much interested in revealing his own documents.

Sen. Barack Obama had a contentious exchange today with Chicago Sun-Times writer Lynn Sweet over papers from his eight years in the Illinois state senate. Sweet has criticized Obama for not being more forthcoming about the location (and even the existence) of those records. She wrote on Monday:

White House hopeful Senator Barack Obama (D-Ill.), who is making government transparency a centerpiece of the latest phase of his campaign, does not always practice what he preaches when it comes to his own business.

http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/usa/2007/11/tobamas_missing_papers.html

OBAMA HAS MISSED CRUCIAL SENATE VOTES

Sen. Barack Obama has missed the most votes of any Democratic presidential hopeful in the Senate over the last two months,
including a vote on an Iran resolution he has blasted Sen. Hillary Clinton for supporting.
The Illinois Democrat has missed nearly 80 percent of all votes since September 2007. ...

Obama has also missed votes on a Democratic priority, the expansion of the federally funded State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) ...

I bet you could trace this Guardian.co.uk link all the way back to Bill. Through Tony, who likes Bill as much as Bill likes Tony. They are 'Third Way' mates. And I believe Tony would like to see Hillary in the White House, not just because she's married to Bill, whom Tony likes, but because she has bought, to some extent, into Tony's peculiar---and radical--- kind of socialism and would bring parts of it it in. Over here. Were she to win. Tony loves a disciple.

Never underestimate the power of links.

Obama should make every effort to find those papers. I want everything out there, now. And they should be released concurrently with Hillary's papers in the Clinton library, her tax returns (already released by the Obamas), and Bill's donor lists. The potential for conflicts of interest and campaign laundering are ripe in Bill's foundation and library.

It wouldn't be an issue, except the Clintons seem to believe that they have the right to rule the world. Haven't we had enough messianic delusions?

"Missing Records" -- People who follow this specious line of reasonig don't know how the system works. All records through the Illinois State Senate's archives. All States actually keep records of everything that happens in their own government--this "journalist" wants his record? She should do her own homework. I hear that's what journalists do. It's not a public official's job to provide records to a reporter while he/she is on the campaign trail. Canard. Next?

"Missed Votes" -- Wrong. According to Reuters, it's the other way around: Clinton leads Obama in missed votes (not that this is really germane to the election--it's not). But since you brought it up:

http://blogs.reuters.com/trail08/2008/02/13/clinton-leads-obama-in-missed-senate-votes/

Now, if you have some real issues to discuss, like, say, the one vote that *really* matters: Let's chat about Hillary's support for the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002, the result of which is more than 1,000,000 killed. You want to hold people accountable for their voting records? Then hold Hillary accountable for hers.

Enough already? You bet.

You are a sorry assed joke.

Your mythic heroine has missed more votes in the senate this year than Obama. The voice of experience, Mrs. 'I care about children' skipped the last SCHIP vote.

Maybe it's best if she skips all the votes since she has trouble getting on the right side of the issues:
Voted for war in Iraq
Voted for war in Iran
Voted to clusterbomb mothers and children
Voted for the 2001 bankruptcy bill

When hillary releases her:
1. tax records
2. secret 1993 healthcare meeting details
3. list of foreign donors to the clinton fortress
4. secret first lazy records
5. sources of Huma's income
6. list of earmarks on spending bills

THEN you can talk. Until hillary does so, shove it.

Think this won't surface if Hilary Diane is the Dem nominee?

“A GOP ace in the hole?”

“...there exists a vault of information American voters are not aware of concerning the Clintons — information which should have been brought to the nation's attention well before the kickoff of the 2008 presidential campaign.

“The bedeviling problem is that party leaders on both sides of the congressional aisle conspired two years ago to bury the telltale documents. I'm referring to the 120 missing pages of the Barrett Report which, by all accounts from Washington insiders, former press secretary Tony Snow among them, contain sufficient evidence of Clinton misdeeds not only to furl Mrs. Clinton's presidential flag but quite possibly to send her and her miscreant husband straight to the courtroom dock. Yet the papers have lain moldering in some deep Capitol Hill tomb with no one daring to dig them up though they can be exhumed on demand by any member of Congress.”

http://www.washingtontimes.com/article/20080124/EDITORIAL/774081954

ANY member of Congress.

I wonder which ultra-right member is poised to pull the trigger when given the go-ahead, in order to save the White House for Republicans if Hillary is the nominee.

Seems like these Party primary processes needs to simply prioritize its candidates, so that if one gets too entangled in a scandal, the runner-up can step forward. I don't know what the trigger is, but it would appear there are at least surface implications that McCain (lobbying), Hillery (Snow, 90s?), Obama (Rezco) are vulnerable. Of course such a system would be rife would conflict: when does a scandal become so intractable that it jeopardizes the Party's legitimate opportunity to take an office? Anyone heard of serious proposals along this line in political science or wherever?

I will die if she gets in the White House. All my dreams will die. Not silly dreams, as she is making them out to be. I mean my dreams---dream singular, really---of having a different kind of president than we've ever had before. One who is rounded out, though young; one who can persuade without bullying both those on the Hill and those who lead other countries; one whose outlook is positive enough to begin healing wounds.

No doubt some literalist here will leap on that last and charge me with thinking that Obama is some kind of healer. Jesus himself and all that. Don't bother, for I don't mean any such thing.

I believe that Hillary would take the country down, divide it, polarize it, and that Obama would, with some hard work and enough time, unify us with other countries. Not all countries, that's a pipedream.
Why should anybody belittle hope? Every voter there has ever been has had hope in a particular candidate. If hope is silly, elections are too, for pete's sake.

What is Hillary, with her talk against hope? A hope-killer, of course; and is there anything worse?

the fear monger?
the war monger?
the hillary goes cybil?

The reality is, this woman has badly mismanaged her campaign and i couldn't trust her to deliver my newspaper

btw folks, these ads are straight out of the 90's and exactly like the ones bill used in his campaign.

hillary doesn't have an original bone in her body

Anyone notice Bill Maher's sexist sketch on Hillary. Pretty sad he's stumping for Obama, too.
He has 3 people on his panel ethier pro Obama or anti-Clinton. Started out with Ed Rendel so he could appear to be "balanced." Bill the Shill.

If Christopher Hitchens is against you, you must be doing something right. That is the best indication that I've made the right choice. If this PBA Pompus British ASS, thinks Hillary is bad, then you know we're on the right track voting for Hillary!

I think I'll stand with Hillary and Mother Thresa!

Both Hillary and Obama are historic figures in American history, But Hillary seems more and more driven by personal ambition, whereas Obama seems more and more called to the historic moment.

Yeah, that makes, sense, that's why he is running for pres at 46 after only 3 years in the Senate and few years in state senate and one failed Congressional run. He is way more ambitious.

"A few years" = EIGHT years. Let's be accurate. ELEVEN years of legislative experience, half his working life.

Based on JerDem1188 great analysis I am convinced now that Hillary is running what is in effect a ponzi scheme to enrich her supporters like Mark Penn. Face it, people like Mark Penn specifically know that Hillary does not have the numbers to win the nomination, but if the campaign stops his company does not take in the windfall profits anymore. This goes for her paid staff as well. I would check if any of them are getting unusual bonuses or raises in pay at this time. I have no doubt that Hillary paid herself or should I say Bill back the $5MM loan by now. It almost goes without saying that her staff is living high of the hog right now in order to spend all the money they can by this Tuesday.

Whatever people may say about Hillary Clinton, she is a public servant. And she wants to be president. No Ponzi Scheme here.

Nellie is right. Hilary has just as much right to pursue the presidency as anyone else.
But Nellie, here's a question for you. What about when Hillary believed in the inevitability of her run for the White House? Did she believe then that Obama had just as much right to run as she did? Some have said she behaved as if she didn't. Is that true, do you think?

"Clinton Camp Throws Sink, Chairs, Table At Obama"

It's looking more and more like they need to throw in the towel...

Yes, but has anyone here got the very latest polls out of Texas? I don't and I need a poll fix. Every time it goes quit with regard to poll info, I get nervous. Anybody got the numbers?

bad news from the Zogby tracking: she had a great Friday and the numbers tightened up. It's neck and neck in Ohio, but I think he came up a bit. No news on the other tracking polls. But the Zogby numbers disturbed me greatly. The 3-day average doesn't even reflect how well she did on Friday. The mud stuck.

Thursday, I had never seen so much mud slung at a candidate in one day. It was breathtaking. And some of it stuck -- that's Hillary's great moral ground, isn't it? At another democrat. How anyone can think she's just a well-meaning public servant after this past week, is beyond me.

I know, I know -- it means she's a good mudslinger and will do the same to McCain. Yeah, right. How she thinks she's going to get any of her 10-point plans through when she would have no coattails to add Democrats to Congress, can only seem to fight instead of persuade or inspire -- I just don't get it. If she gets the call at 3:00 a.m., she'll appoint a commission, "work hard", and come up with a 10-point plan. Or just ask Bill. Some great feminist, you feminists are supporting.

She would be a disaster as president. The only good thing would be the Supreme Court. That's if she could beat McCain. Which I doubt.

Hillary Diane, there isn't enough lye in the entire country to wash away the filth you have submerged yourself in.

Never again will I look at her with admiration.

There are a lot of us who loved and defended the Clintons for years. So our disappointment in Hillary that has grown with each passing day -- we are heartsick about this.

To see that her 35 years of "experience" has only made her bitter and as lying, mean and fearmongering as Karl Rove, has been heartbreaking to us. To take Bill's entire campaign from 1992 and trash it when it comes to Obama -- well the dishonesty of it is breathtaking.

CLINTON: Now, one of Clinton's laws of politics is this. If one candidate is trying to scare you and the other one is try get you to think, if one candidate is appealing to your fears and the other one is appealing to your hopes, you better vote for the person who wants you to think and hope."

He said this at a Kerry rally in 2004 and again in an interview on CNN in 2004. Those are the documented times for which we have video and transcripts.

But the Clintons can drag the entire country through their personal dramas again for their personal ambition.

Still up to the American people to take a stand. I have faith.....
