I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Hillary Clinton

Earlier this week an aide to the Hillary Clinton campaign publicly predicted that a "kitchen sink" barrage of attacks would be launched at rival Barack Obama -- and the sound you hear today is precisely that of the sink, the flooring and perhaps the plumbing getting thrown around the room.

The first bang this morning was a Clinton campaign ad featuring images of children sleeping and a red phone beeping. A voice asks: "Who do you want answering the phone in the White House when it's 3 a.m. and something has happened in the world?" A studious-looking Clinton is seen diligently answering the call.

The new ad was just one of several attack strategies at the center of a lengthy conference call with reporters later in the day, in which Clinton aides took Obama to task on issues ranging from national security and NAFTA to his ties to indicted Chicago political insider Antoin Rezko.

The campaign operatives also engaged in some standard fiddling with expectations, arguing that if Obama failed to win all four states that vote on Tuesday -- Texas, Ohio, Vermont and Rhode Island -- it would send troubling signals about "dissatisfaction with [his] campaign."

Speaking for well more than an hour, top Clinton aides Howard Wolfson, Mark Penn, and Phil Singer sounded a markedly aggressive tone. Wolfson lamented what he charged was media unwillingness, up to this point, to dig deeper into Obama's relationship to Rezko, whose federal corruption trial is scheduled to start on Monday.

"How many of you [on this call] know how many fundraisers Tony Rezko hosted for Sen. Obama?" he asked. "How many of you know how much he gave to Sen. Obama?" These were two among more than a dozen similar challenges put to the reporters on the call.

The Clinton camp also tried to draw attention to recent news reports that an aide to Obama had made contact with Canadian officials, assuring them that the senator's criticism of NAFTA was not as severe as he has been publicly suggesting during the campaign.

The Obama camp denied the story, saying no contact at any level had ever been made, but the Clinton aides pressed the attack.

Story continues below

"I've found the Obama campaign's response to this has been less than definitive," said Wolfson. "Has Austan Goolsbee [the Obama aide] had any contact with anyone in the Canadian government or embassy to tell them that Sen. Obama's criticism of NAFTA was not particularly sincere? This is a yes or no question."

Earlier in the day, Obama had addressed the new Clinton "3 am" television ad as well, saying: "It plays on people's fears to scare up votes... We've had a red phone moment. It was the decision to invade Iraq. And Sen. Clinton gave the wrong answer."

Once again, Clinton's aides jumped all over Obama's response. Insisting their work was not comparable to President Lyndon Johnson's famous 1964 "Daisy" advertisement, which suggested that the election of Barry Goldwater could trigger a nuclear war, they accused Obama of attempting to remove the issue of national security from the campaign debate.

"It is an absolute insult to the voters to suggest that a discussion of national security in this campaign constitutes fear mongering," said Wolfson. "National security is an essential part of every election, it is a essentially part of what the president does. If we can't talk about it during an election, when can we talk about it?"

Added Penn: "It is not playing on people's fears, it is putting before people one of two central questions, who do you think is ready to be commander in chief and who do you think is best for the economy?"

On the conference call, anger and accusations were certainly in abundance. But so too was standard-issue campaign spin. The Clinton camp, playing off of a memo it had sent to reporters earlier in the day, insisted that if Obama was unable to pull off a four-for-four day in Tuesday's primary, it would signal "buyer's remorse" with his candidacy as well as "interest in having this campaign go on, at least to Pennsylvania" (which votes on April 7).

("There's a problem" if Obama doesn't sweep the March 4th contests, the memo states. "Democrats, the majority of whom have favored Hillary in the primary contests held to date, have their doubts about Senator Obama, and are having second thoughts about him as a prospective standard-bearer.")

One reporter asked whether this line of reasoning was a departure from comments made earlier in the week by Bill Clinton, who said that his wife had to win both Ohio and Texas to secure the nomination. No, said Wolfson, before adding that he would never question the judgment of the former president.

Asked another reporter: What would the message be if Obama won every state but Rhode Island (where Clinton holds a sizable lead in the polls)? Would that, too, be a sign of Democratic unease?

"I don't anticipate that that will be an outcome," said Wolfson. "I'm much more optimistic than that scenario being presented."

Does anyone remember when Yahoo! used to allow comments on news stories?

Because it was abused, and degenerated into insults and name-calling, they did away with it.

So will the Huffington Post.

Can people maybe stay on topic and maybe stop being assholes to each other?

Nah. Probably not.

Silliness is just an outlet for us, most of our entries are quite serious, staggering in their depth and insight, and worthy of print. Why, some of the many ideas you have seen coming from Hillary today, may God count their numbers, are ones she pinched from this very site. Yes. She trolls here, and has been doing so ever since the cupboard went bare. And there is actually a plot afoot to set her up with some new idea or other, one that looks good enough to tempt her but that is bad enough to ruin her.
It is our patriotic duty to both hatch this plot and see that it comes to fruition.

Does it strike anyone else as interesting that Hillary is fighting harder on HER election than anything else, ever?

Isn't it worth anything that she never felt the need to fight even 1% against the Iraq War?

Can you imagine what might have been had she gone nuclear agains the Iraq War at ANY time between 9/11 and the 2004 election?

Guess it wasn't worth fighting for; guess she couldn't see what was in it for her.

That is correct. Apparently, here is something for her in a lawsuit she is reported to have mentioned---just in passing and just as a possibility---to the powers that be down in Texas.
More accurately, there must be something for her in merely floating the idea of one, just to see the reaction. Which was terse.

How far will she go? How low will she go? Oh when, oh when, will she go???!!!

The Arugment for better judgement :

My judgment is better than yours, you know why?
I didn’t have to vote when it came to the war. I just had to talk about it.

In the white house my judgment will continue to be better than yours.
I will just have to talk and do nothing else.

YES WE CAN.

BAD JUDGEMENT, In 2005 Obama wanted to buy a house he couldn't afford, but even though everyone in Chicago KNEW Tony Rezko was being investigated by the FEDS, Obama approched Tony Rezko seeking his help to buy this house. Tony Rezko then borrowed $3.5 million from Nadhmi Auchi to help with this transaction because Tony's wife needed the $125,000 down payment on the $625,000 vacant lot that HAD to be purchased to enable Obama to buy the attached house for $1.65 million. To me this sounds like very POOR JUDGEMENT, maybe the readers can decide as well

Chowda-head,

It doesn't really need to be said, because I'm sure you've already heard it:

How many people running for elected office or with anything significant to lose stood up and criticized the War at the point in time?

In careful circles, you were considered a nutcase to stand up and be counted against the war unless you were an absolute nobody.

Tell me the important people you know, except for peace activitists and those like Michael Moore who make a living standing up for liberal causes? Name them.

Well, Barack Obama wasn't a nobody. He had a lot riding on his actions then, too, and a long, bright future to consider.

HRC knew better. She just thought she could hide behind: "everyone did it" and "I thought he was just going to send the inspectors in" (then why not sign the amendment to prevent Bush from going to war? ssshhhhhhhh!)

So your argument leaks water.

No body asked Obama for his answer on that war. He just had to speak then.
And when it came to voting ever since on anything related to the war. He just did what Hillary did.
Try a new argument.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:46 PM on 02/29/2008

Will all do respect, you're post isn't really that insightful or clear, or even intelligent for that matter.

On voting, well that's such a preposterous statement. Not only is it borrowed from Clinton's talking points (so much for a "new argument"), but it dubiously suggests that Clinton was somehow anti-war, or so appalled by Bush's invasion.

I suppose if you can't understand the Bus/Ditch analogy, then I suppose a more nuanced discussion won't do any good, will it?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:05 PM on 02/29/2008

You are right. Obama didn't have to given an answer about the war. He could have played the political GAME and remained silent. Instead he spoke out against the war when it was not considered "patriotic" to be against an immoral, illegal war. He risked his political future when he did that; and he didn't even HAVE to say anything.

Hillary, OTOH, did the politically expedient thing, as she usually does.

When she loses and loses big, it will be because of these kinds of activities.

Imagined scenario from the “Phone-y ” Clinton ad:
Hillary answers the phone at 3a.m., wearing her glasses to “see” through the stinky smelly smoke. Hillary speaks: You’re sure? Another witness from that last campaign funding fraud charge? He maybe should have joined the witness protection program. Yah, that was a stupid joke. Oh, he was found dead in the same park where Vince Foster was found? Nah, just coincidence, not to worry. I know Foster committed suicide, they had it all wrong when some swore that Vince’s hands were down at his sides and he was laid out straight like a corpse in a coffin. They didn’t need to consider those minor details: the skull bone fragments missing, no blood on the gun, no dirt on the shoes. Didn’t matter, the final report said it was suicide. Well, I bet they can’t trace the gun this one used either, just like in the Foster case. Oh, well, that’s life. Did you hear about my new fundraiser? It’s going to be great, all those rich little old ladies on that cruise ship, paying big bucks to have their picture taken with Bill. Yep..he still has some power over women, that little rascal. But it’s all in the head, no more kneeling or blue dresses, and these old ladies can barely walk, let alone kneel. When I get back in the White House I’m going to take “real good care” of Bill. HAHAHAHAHA (cackle, cackle).
End of scenario

This is how Obama intends to get the endorsement of the Super Delegates, through threats and intimidations. This has been the core of Obama's strategy from the beginning. And Obama has the gall to say Bill Clinton is a racist?

If a delegate oversees a district that went 62-20 for Obama, and that delegate still chooses to support someone other than the peoples choice, that person needs to be replaced. If there are areas where a district goes for Clinton yet the superD goes for Obama, that person needs to be replaced.

Those delegates deserve to be pressured into voting according to their districts. Anything less is un democratic.

I see, so you're blaming Obama for the grassroots organizations that are applying pressure, such as ColorOfChange.org. Individuals and organizations that are not affiliated with any campaign -- and who do not speak for any candidate -- should not be used as examples of wrongful behavior by either campaign. If you can show that a candidate encourages such behavior, then you might have an argument.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:47 PM on 02/29/2008

That's exactly right, Sisyphuss!

It's not bad enough that Hillary constantly distorts the truth to support her arguments. Now her supporters are doing it.

Below is a quote from the article cited.

"Black superdelegates are getting heavy pressure from such groups as ColorOfChange.org, a grass-roots organization whose members overwhelmingly support Obama."

NEWS FLASH!!!

What's wrong with that?
This is a democracy. It's the right of constituents to exert pressure on politicians to do the right thing.

I'll take bets on this. Soon after Hillary fails to win TX and OH by the margins she needs to have a credible shot at beating Obama on pledged Dels on March 4th, Howard Dean will have a sit down with both candidates and give Hillary a chance for a dignified exit.

If she refuses, Dean, Gore, the DNC and Super Delegates will flock to Obama and help push him over the top on delegates to take Hillary out. She'll have a choice, leave gracefully or in humiliatiion. Hope she chooses the former, expect she'll choose the latter.

One of Obama's advisors is Ziggy Brzezinski, former National Security Advisor for JIMMY CARTER. Maybe you're too young to remember the job Carter/Brzezinski did with the Iranian hostage situation that was caused by their failure to support a friend, the Shah of Iran. They let Iran get taken over by radical islamists. Ziggy Brzezinski connected Jimmy Carter to the ultra-rich eastern liberals and now he is doing that for Obama. These will be the people holding power if Obama wins.

"'It's 3 a.m., and your children are safe and asleep, but there's a phone in the White House and it's ringing,' says the narrator in Clinton's ad.

"Something's happening in the world. Your vote will decide who answers that call, whether it's someone who already knows the world's leaders, knows the military -- someone tested and ready to lead in a dangerous world.

"'Hello, White House?'"

"'Yes?'"

"'Who is this, please?'

"'Monica ...'

"'Who?'

"'Monica ...'

"'MONICA?!?!?!?!'

"'Yes, remember me?'"

Love your post , but it's not really funny. As a 60 year old women....I was embarassed. I was embaressd for our country. For a long time now "I haven't been really proud to be an American. If you want respect, you have to earn it. Billary didn't. How can you be a world power when that shit is going on in your own country. It's time for us all to think about what's going on at home, then we can judge the rest of the world.

We need to stop the political sniping. All of us are guilty. Stop being childish. We are supposed to be debating the direction and leadership of our country. Lets NOT engage in, as Obama put it, "Silly Season" politics. Lets figure out how to go forward. We cannot engage in this any further. It really is destroying the democratic party. Obama! Stop this madness and support Hillary! Please. For the greater good.

Yeah, she needs at least 65% of the Republican vote that Obama has been getting throughout this Primary. Sad but, fucking true. Your friend Obama is the biggest republican life raft floating down the Mississippi. RECOGNIZE, BIATCH. Again, I'll debate any of you "degree-toting-stat-infused-MSM-backed-empty-headed" "college students" any day of the week. Just give me 48 hours to prepare. I'll be ready.

What??, I see delusion has come from the Campaign down to the supporters.

Next, Hillary supporters are going say Obama has to win Ohio and Texas to just stay in the race, since he's lost 11 straight. Why is the media still staying Obama can still fight back, get momentum. Why, why why?
