Dave Clark Five lead singer Mike Smith died of pneumonia Thursday, less than two weeks before the band was to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was 64.

Smith died at a hospital outside of London, his agent Margo Lewis said.

He was admitted to the intensive care unit Wednesday morning with a chest infection, a complication from a spinal cord injury that left him paralyzed below the ribcage with limited use of his upper body. Lewis said he was injured when he fell from a fence at his home in Spain in September 2003.

Smith had been in the hospital since the accident, and was just released last December when he moved into a specially prepared home near the hospital with his wife.

"These last five years were extremely difficult for Mike. I am incredibly saddened to lose him, his energy and his humor, but I am comforted by the fact that he had the chance to spend his final months and days at home with his loving wife Charlie," Lewis said.

Smith wrote songs as well as singing and playing keyboards for the Dave Clark Five, one of many British rock acts whose music swept across the United States in the 1960s during the so-called British Invasion.

The Beatles are the best remembered, of course, but at the time the Dave Clark Five posed the strongest threat, commercially and critically, to their pre-eminence.

The Dave Clark Five claimed a string of U.S. hits, including "Because," "Glad All Over," and "I Like it Like That." By 1966, the band had made 12 appearances on "The Ed Sullivan Show," then a record for any British group.

The group's antics were captured in John Boorman's 1965 documentary "Catch Us If You Can," which followed Smith and his band mates through the English city of Bristol.

While the group -- which broke up in 1970 -- was named after him, Dave Clark himself was the drummer.

The group is going to be inducted in the rock hall on March 10, a ceremony Lewis said Smith was trying to attend.

"We're very unhappy about the whole situation -- it's sad," Rock and Roll Hall of Fame President Joel Peresman said.

He said the ceremony would go ahead as planned, but that there would be "a little extra significance this year."

Said Lewis: "He was extremely excited and honored to have been inducted ... and I am glad that he will be remembered as a hall of famer, because he was in so many ways."

Smith is survived by his wife, Arlene (nicknamed Charlie).

The band that knocked the Beatles out of the #1 spot on the charts.

I remember fondly and mourn.

I remember the DC5 way back when I was a kid in 1963. I liked a few of their songs but the Beatles were the best by far. I knew it was over for the DC5 about two years later when they dressed as 20's style gangsters in slick suits for some magazine shot. It was clear to me as a kid that they were really a "novelty" band and had had it.

From what I read in the last few years, they were members of an English soccer team that picked up instruments to raise money for their squad or league. Many produceers, including Ed Sullivan, loved their squeaky clean looks. But they were one trick ponies with just one or two good songs. And actually, their lead singer couldn't have cared less about music anyway, for what I read.

their lead singer was mike smith - not dave clark. mike loved music, continued to record albums long after the DC5, and toured with his band. before his accident, i believe he was preparing for another tour.

the DC5 delivered what was sweeping the world at the time - english pop. not all survived the continuing changing music scene that followed, including gerry and the pacemakers, herman's hermits, the zombies, freddie and the dreamers, billy j kramer and the dakotas, the kinks (as their original pop band), and quite a few more bands that don't readily jump to mind. but from all of those british "invasion" pop bands we still have songs that are favorites 40 years later, including "because," "glad all over," and "bits and pieces" from the dave clark 5.

click on the link below in a previous post of mine to see how many records the DC5 sold while still in their heyday and performing on shindig.

Shows what I know .... I thought they had a great sound but since I was just a casual fan, I always assumed Dave Clark did the lead vocals. Well, that's what happens when you assume ... it makes an ass out of u and me! RIP, Mike Smith .. thanks for the catchy music that still makes me smile.

and on....I'm being a little rough on them. The few songs they made were fine and I liked them. That's what pop music is for.

They were great. Apparently the sax player also died recently as well? Idiots in that Jann Wenner mafia there that keep putting in every single goofy Winwood/Clapton spin-off act(Blind Faith?! Derek and the dominoes? Hello-didja guys know that Alias and Bad English are available now?!) at the expense of guys like the DC5, the Spinners, the Stylistics, Connie Francis, Brook Benton, etc. etc. Sure Rock Hall. Tell us you didn't blow this one, and but good.

RIP Mike Smith. This was a fine group.

It's somehwat of a crime that it took so long for the DC5 to be inducted, especially when far inferior groups went in before.

LOL. You're right of course. Rush? Pretentious pseudo-intellectual twaddle. Neal Peart reveres Ayn Rand for chrissake.
DC5, unpretentious tuneful pop. Should have been inducted long ago. Glad All Over is worth more than all the Rush albums combined.

They were Great 60's pop. Some of my fondest memories are driving around aimlessly & listening to the Dave Clark 5 . Smith had a great voice, the group had a fine sense of melody & were always fun. Rest in Peace / Best to the family.. Thanks for the music..

Who cares about DC5 going into the hall, the R&R Hall of Fame is about as relevant as George W. Bush. Perhaps when they stick KISS in there, then their other selections will be worth a byline. Dead musician...what a tragedy. How rare.

Really though. What is relevant about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Has music ever really influenced real world events? Maybe hymms or tunes or whatever have been sung by the frontline activists say during the Civil Rights marches or whatever but it usually has nothing to do with anybody's commercial industry. Back then it would have been a gospel hymm or maybe Dylan. Woody Guthries not in the rock and roll hall of fame. But he did what Rock N Roll was suppose to do but never did. Rock N Roll though I love it, does not connect on a street level politically. Maybe that is not it's function, but if it's not why venerate it?

The Dave Clark Five and Mike Smith didn't make any earth shattering social rock like the Clash and they weren't as prolific and savvy as the Beatles but they made good pop with great melodies and you could dance. RIP Mike.

Dave Clark Five, The Kinks, MC5, Iggy, The New York Dolls, The Ramones, The Pistols, The Clash it's all punk rock. Maybe the DC5 weren't political but the act of playing the kind of music they did when they did inspired other people who were political. For me Punk rock goes back half a century now, because I include Gene Vincent and The Burnett Bros.

Precisely right. There's nothing wrong with well done pop. All protest and no pop makes jack a dull boy. Getting it all said in two and a half minutes takes discipline and artistry.

rest in peace, mike. back in the 60s, you were my favorite member of the dave clark five - i still can recall you standing at the small electric keyboard singing "because" looking slim, trim and handsome.

in the photo posted here at huffpost, that's mike on the right, standing and facing the camera.

i was saddened to learn awhile back of your injury in spain and i've followed your progress at the web site dedicated to your recovery. for those of you unaware, mike fell from a high fence in his yard in spain. it was a freak accident - he didn't have his keys to the house and on whim, decided to climb a back fence adjoining the house to enter through a high window.

paralyzed from about the chest down, mike spent about 4 1/2 years in hospital and was only just recently able to live with his wife. though still wheelchair bound, he was able to experience a bit more independence.

he had great support from many fans, industry legends, and friends throughout his recovery. he was elated by the nomination of the dave clark five to the rock and roll hall of fame and was doing all that he could to make sure he attended.

by all accounts, mike smith was a happy, upbeat guy all his life. my condolences to his wife and family.
