Did SNL Err In Casting Non-Black Actor To Play Obama?

When Barack Obama announced his candidacy for president last year, some observers questioned whether the senator from Illinois was "black enough" to embody the hopes and aspirations of African Americans.

Now a variation on that theme has emerged: Is Fred Armisen, who is not African American, "black enough" to embody Obama on "Saturday Night Live"?

What did Obama do and feel when 9/11 happened?

I REALLY want to know.

I flew a flag after 9/11. I felt love for this land and people.

Obama's father wasn't even African American. It is like electing a newcomer to the highest office of the land.

Do we not have more love for our country than this??

Amy Poehler's take on Hillary expresses a lot of the nervy, overreaching exuberance of Mrs. Clinton as she has revealed herself on in the campaign. Fred Armisen's impersonation of Obama expresses a constipated rather dull character who doesn't begin to represent the boyish charm that's made Barack so dynamic in the campaign. Lacking key traits, the characterization just isn't funny, but rather just a bad attempt to look like him, utilizing makeup and certain body language. If that's the best that SNL can do, then I guess it just goes to show us what a unique personality Mr. Obama has.

I thought Rudy Guliani in his appearance on SNL this Saturday was given the best joke. When asked what happened to his campaign, he answered to the effect that, like a Saturday Night Live skit, it started out good but then just ended up going nowhere. If Lorne Michaels is concerned about funny, he should find a better Obama, cause this isn't even starting out funny...though it's obvious Hillary likes the attention. Most celebrities do.

No. The only error SNL made was kissing Hillary's considerable backside. I see again why I rarely waste my time checking in to see it.

First of all, Armisen isn't white. He's Japanese and Venezuelan, if I recall correctly.

Second, it's a stupid point. It's a distraction from the fact that the sketch was actually pretty bad, and that SNL has a definite pro-Hillary viewpoint.

Obama has not had an easy ride from the MSM like Hillary claims. He just handles the criticism better than HRC. And Fey and the SNL ilk are falling on the side "woman president or nothing".

Hillary is falling behind because of her questionable campaign strategy, her idiotic war vote (done for political expediency, nothing else), her awful Senate record (flag burning bill!), her surrogates trashing states that went for Obama, Bill's subtle racism in South Carolina, etc., etc.. In other words, the reasons are numerous and complex. They run deep, and people of Fey's and SNL's ilk don't seem to be able to comprehend what is really going on here.

I personally find it offensive/moronic that the question was asked in the first place.

I can truthfully say that I have only agreed with Rushbo once - on his term "half-rican-american".
If I were Mr. Obama, i would make that terminology my own and use that term continuously
until limpball's head exploded......

then maybe idiotic subjects like this will go away for ever, Maybe, just maybe, an Obama
presidency will put this crap away for good.

Allow me to date my self and pointout that Godfrey Cambridge played a white bigot that woke up black in "Watermelon Man" to hillarious effect. Aside from all of the PC bullshit we're getting in this post, one questino remains: Is it funny? If it is, then let it go, if it's not, well it IS SNL.

I think the best example of this comes from Chappelle - his blind white supremecist (sp?) who doesn't realize he's black should shut most people up about this stuff.

Obama is 50% white & 50% black!! He can pick from both columns. Therefore, when casting an actor to portray him, it should be a light-skinned/white actor . . . who isn't necessarily white. NO one should be offended. I'm surprised this question needed to come up to begin with. People are stunned that Michelle isn't light-skinned or white, so what's the problem again?

Americans are just retarded when it comes to race period.

That's OK, he'll cast a black guy as Bill Clinton. Even it all out in the end.

He was dead on. I can't wait to see him interact with Daryll Hammond's Bill Clinton. That should be a hoot.

I feel the same way when black folk act in Shakespeare... Hated when Denzel was Don Pedro of Arragon in Kenneth Branagh's Much Ado About Nothing. Black folk can't play anything but what black folk were meant to play --- like endless reruns of the Color Purple, or extras in Roots...

Not !! Get real fools.

Wow, reading the remarks here is enlightening. From reading this it sounds like most of the respondents here need a little history lesson. We used to have white people playing black people all the time on stage. This occurred from the 1850s until well into the 1900s. It was called minstrelsy. I think there is a some of that going on here. As it was when Darrell Hannah played Jesse Jackson. But calling this the worse story that HP has ever had. Come on. This can't be worse than the tens of Britney Spears or Paris Hilton non-stories that have polluted this site.

Minstrel shows had nothing in common with this SNL sketch. They didn't have "white people playing black people", they had white people making up nasty, negative stereotypes about black people out of whole cloth.

We are living in an increasingly multiracial country, thank heavens - and a multiracial actor played multiracial Obama in a subtle sketch on SNL. There wasn't a minstrel in sight.

What ever actor auditioned as the funniest is the one who should have picked regardless of race or sex.

Aren't we all multi-racial? This is such a non-story, it sickens me. Why are we focusing on what Lorne Michaels and Fred Armison are doing rather than the freaking candidates? And why is it that most of the "news" reported is ABOUT the media. Who reports the actual news anymore?

Totally. And isn't Obama half-white as well? So why should he only be played by a black comedian? In the spirit of fairness they should have written the same article if a black comedian played him, but somehow I think they wouldn't have. He's as much white as he is black. I'm glad SNL played on the worship Obama gets from the media (which to be fair - Obama seems uncomfortable with).

hey, didn't Tracy Morgan play Bush on an episode of SNL? Where was the outcry?
Truth is, Samantha Bee did a hilarious segment on the Daily Show on the Obama worship thing over six months ago.

"And isn't Obama half-white as well?"

Actually, he's half black.

There's a difference you know.

yes, people, i feel your pain - the new color and font of the huffington "comments"
is disconcerting, please, carry on - if you can.

fred armisen playing barrack.
hard to understand why a brilliant comic, playing a brilliant politician,
is of anyone's concern.

to me, this is the same shit that sinks the democrats in every election.
all that p.c. shit, that doesn't mean shit.

we could have a vote for the best person to play barrack.
then we could vote on the script, line by line.
then , guess what - it would SUCK!

democracy is good for somethings - not comedy.

comedy is anarchy, that goes against the status quo. that's why we love it.

government is unsovable. lots of people doing fucked up shit that will never be solved.
that's why huffingtonpost will never die. government is forever unsovable.

solving government is like solving money. it will never be done.

live. love. time is spinning away.
love your family and your people.
in the end, we are all
seagulls flying to the horizon.
the line of truth that won't go away.
