Ellen Degeneres took a moment on her show Friday to remember 15-year-old Lawrence King. King was shot and killed by 14-year-old Brandon McInerney, who he'd asked to be his Valentine, on February 12.

Ellen got choked up discussing it and made a plea to stop the hate."Larry is not a second-class citizen. I am not a second-class citizen. It is okay if you are gay."

She also made a call for voters to look at the candidates extra closely this election season. "We must change our country. We can do it with our behavior... We can do it with our vote... Fight hate."

It's interesting that bigots (mainly Christian) have decided to exploit this news for their own ideological gain.

Prior to this episode of Ellen frankly, since I do not watch a great deal of television, I thought of her as little more than a Hollywood creation, no substance. But, having watched this clip alone and with friends, I was moved to tears, as were the people I was with, she is a powerful and thoughtful advocate for human rights, and I hope that she does not simply stop at this point. As Dr. Warren teaches, the intolerance of factions of Christianity, Islam, and Judaism, as well as other faiths, towards historically marginalized groups should not be a barrier to individuals who wish to build a future of tolerance, acceptance, and understanding - the true principles of the Bible. Those that preach hate or intolerance on the basis of their interpretation of scripture or doctrine will never be convinced by any form of logical appeal, so do not waste your time, invest your time in building bridges with those individuals and groups who are in need and open to dialogue, one person at a time, the world will change.

Sorry, folks, but homosexuality is as much a mental and sexual disorder as pedophilia and transgenderism and necrophilia and bestiality and......well, I don't have as much experience in perversion as PuffPosters, so my list is, shall we say, spent.

Now I know those things are normal to you.........but.........those of us outside of Berkeley have a different opinion. Don'cha' know.

So, this is your opinion on something of which you claim to have little experience. Well, I must say, your depth of understanding is apparent. But it does make me wonder how much the parents of the little 8th grader who gave a valentine to his friend would appreciate your viewpoint on their son's burgeoning "mental and sexual disorder". I imagine the boy who murdered their son shared your perspective, though. He's heard it enough, it's a very popular way to deal with something some people just don't understand. Something scared him enough to cause him to take someone else's life from them, and I don't think it was the valentine. Maybe it was something someone who had little experience or understanding about the matter told him about homosexuals.

I'm sure homosexuals have just as many mental and sexual disorders as heterosexuals. However, loving someone enough to give them a valentine isn't one of them. One obvious mental disorder, in my opinion, is looking down on someone who is different than oneself. It expresses the viewpoint of a narcissistic and paranoid person, (and yes, I have experience with this disorder, so my opinion carries with it the degree of understanding I've gained from dealing with the disorder).....BUT you don't have to live in Berkeley to have a different opinion than yours.

The point of my opinion on the matter is that if we question our own ability to understand something, we might be able to learn to love and respect each other for who they are rather than who we think they should be. We could learn to do this, with work ... that is unless we have a serious enough mental or sexual disorder, some narcissistic paranoia expressing itself in a phobic reaction to same-sex attention...then we will continue to be people who become killers.

Of course, it makes me wonder, what exactly is the point of your opinion ...seeing as you say you have little experience in the matter? Are you subconsciously dealing with something in your own life....or just adding fuel to the fire of misunderstanding?

The simple fact that you put pedophilia, necrophilia and bestiality in the same category already shows you have a lot to learn about sexual deviances.

Qualifying homosexuality as a deviance and mixing it up with the above mentioned is further proof of the extent of your ignorance..

From the bottom of my heart I pity you.

Damn johnny, with all the comments you're leaving here about gay being unnatural, it would seem that you have some deep-rooted issue within yourself. Fairly transparent.

My dear johnny (just?) You don't sound like you have a lot of experience in many things. What degrees do you have that allow you to back up these assertions? My guess is that...since you are so strongly opposed to homosexuality, you might want to check yourself; it is a well known fact that those who are so adamant about hating homosexuality are big homosexuals themselves. You are one scary individual!

Thank you Ellen, maybe one day the people of the world will truly see that gay people are the most gifted people in the world, God made them that way. The greatest artist, composers and writers were gay, that is not an accident that was Gods plan, gays are the most loving people on earth.

Most of her message I agreed with but she did seem sort of hypocritical when at the end, she turned it into a political calling, which in the beginning, she seemed hesitant to do.

You cannot legislate the hate out of people. Voting for either of the three remaining candidates will not end bigotry, racism or hate crimes.

It has everything to do wht politics, the republican party is not gay friendly. Laws do matter!!!!

We all hav sympathy/empathy for this kid but I hope Ellen one day will cry for many other hate crimes happening that are not "so close to her." We should all be against ALL hate crimes and not just the ones that are against "one's own class."

Do you have ENOUGH sympathy/empathy to advocate for safe schools and passage of hate crimes legislation for The GLBT Community?

Right on the heels of Lawrence King"s murder came news of the fatal shooting of an openly gay 17-year-old, Simmie Williams, Jr., in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, at the site of a 2003 unsolved murder of a transwoman. A few days later, a gay couple reported that they were attacked outside a Ft. Lauderdale diner by a man spewing anti-gay epithets. Ft. Lauderdale police are struggling to solve both cases, a fact which brings to mind the urgent need to enact an INCLUSIVE federal hate crimes law. Perhaps with FEDERAL resources, the process of apprehending and prosecuting the culprits could be hastened.

Marriage, Hate Crimes Protection, etc. are not "special" rights...they are EQUAL rights!

Stay safe, healthy and happy,
Love, Loretta

I don't think anyone can fault her for discussing an issue of proximity. It would be unusual for her to make an episode about black-on-black crime.

Ellen was not being political; she was being logical. We have too many, especially in the Evangelical and GOP communities, who have been trying to get us to cave to their homophobia, and they've taught us, through the actions of our not-so-esteemed leadership, that you hate what you fear, and you kill it.

Homophobia is bigotry, a fancy name for fear and hatred. If you have ever known any homosexuals, you will know that they are no different from any one of us. Wanna put 'em down? I'm a straight single who never managed to find a partner who believed in the sanctity of a monogamous relationship. My marriage ended because of a heterosexual relationship, not a gay one.

At the same time, I have two dear friends, gay, who just celebrated their 31st anniversary (of course, they're not allowed to marry, so it truly marks a day), and are more in love than most straight couples. They are two of the kindest, most generous people I know, a sentiment echoed by all those who know them.

So start looking at homophobia for what it is -- fear -- False Evidence Appearing Real. Best way to counter is understanding that we are all one, all made in the image and likeness of God, a part of the One. Vote well. Our future depends on it.

First things first...this is a tragedy. I also agree that as parents, you set the tone for your kids, especially when it comes to how you treat other people, which should be respectfully, even if you disagree, regardless of religion, race, orientation or any other segment of the population you want to throw out.

However, Ellen, you are a hypocrite. 34 seconds into the clip she says she's not political, doesn't mean for this to be political, she's not a political person...yet she ends the clip at 2:04 encouraging you in a thinly veiled attempt to vote for Obama.

Yea, she's not political. C'mon Ellen, who you crapping?

Is it a hate crime if a gay person murders another gay person? When Andrew Cunanan murdered Gianni Versace, nobody was talking about a hate crime, yet the end result was the same. Andrew Cunanan was way more hateful than Brandon McInerney. Just saying.

Was the reason he killed Versace BECAUSE Versace was gay? No.

I am not a second class citizen.

My heart goes out to his kid, he deserved more from his community...he was in the foster care systen as well, I don't know how many of you knew this. To be in the foster care system can only mean that he was going through his own hell on many levels, beyond just his sexuality. What a tragedy. Its in moments like this that I do pray we have an afterlife...that this boy has found peace, love and acceptance from a power far greater than ourselves...a place where asking someone to be your valentine is an act of love, not a reson for hate and murder.

Thank you Ellen for putting it out there....Somehow, I am sure, he was greeted by Matthew Shepard and all those that came before him....http://www.stophate.us/victims.html

I am truly sorry for the family of this boy and their loss. Ellen, no one I can think of exhibits a better example than you of how we are all alike. Laughter is always the best medicine and while this subject is no laughing matter your tremendous sense of humor will win out in the long run. God speed, so many Americans have come to love you and who you are. I just can't find all the words to say thank you for doing so much.
