At a town hall meeting in Richardson, Texas, Thursday afternoon, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., made a gaffe that will surely provide myriad conservative radio talk show hosts confirmation of their views, by accidentally calling himself a liberal.

"I will conduct a respectful debate," McCain told the crowd at Texas Instruments, per ABC News' Bret Hovell. "Now, it will be spirited because there are stark differences. I am a proud conservative, liberal Republica--- conservative Republican," he said, catching himself. "Hello?" he said as the crowd laughed. "Easy there."

This was definitely not a mistake.

I agree- this was to appeal to the middle of the road democrats and independents who would be happy with either Obama or Mccain. Let's face it- either one is better than hillary. The turning point was Romne3y's comment about not wanting to leave bill clinton in the white house for 4 years with nothing to do. So accurate. For the left- this election is a win-win.

He is doing this on purpose. Don't kid yourselves he is appealing to disenfranchised Clinton supporters.

I've heard both Clinton and Obama supporters say they would vote for McCain if their preference is not nominated - slightly more Clinton than Obama supporters.

I don't understand how any Democrat could vote for John McCain, but then again I don't see how any Democrat could vote for Hillary Clinton.

The Obama campaign has called me twice so I would vote for Obama Tuesday. I told the guy that I liked both McCain & Obama & he said he's been hearing this quite a bit. He suggested that I would vote for Obama because McCain is already the nominee. I will but Obama is way ahead of Clinton in my state.

Right. Unfortunately for McCain, he can not be Reagan who while appearing to be a 'moderate' to capture the independents and some Democrats, lead the nation from the right. McCain has actually voted against what some conservatives believe is in their own interests, and hearing him make this gaffe will only confirm in their limited and narrow minds that he is not one of them. This in the end, will appeal to some of Clinton's supporters who will eventually determine who will win this thing.

And couple this with Hillary's own slash-and-burn style of politics, she will basically help to make Obama 's job far more difficult than it should be in naturally picking up her supporters. But, what this really exposes is how weak both parties' national leadership has become, as one can't force one candidate out of the race and the other can't find a concensus candidate to represent its core values.

The longer Hillary stays in the race, the longer and more difficult it will be for Obama to bring his own coalition together, but the good news is that McCain who apparently looks like the republican nominee won't be that much further ahead himself, as he too is facing an uphill battle in bring together parts of his party, who distrust what he actually stands for.

This is going to be a wide open race, and one that will be just as close as the last two. Hopefully, Obama will be able to pull together his side in time to squeeze by McCain, who will be a formitable opponent in spite of the fact that he is hampered by his own party and his ability to concentrate while on the grueling campaign trail.
