Michelle Obama:

Michelle Obama: "Don't Go Into Corporate America"

National Review   |  Byron York   |   February 29, 2008 04:39 PM

digg Share this on Facebook Huffpost - stumble reddit del.ico.us RSS

I have a new story today about Michelle Obama's visit to Zanesville, Ohio, where she met with a group of women at a local day care center. According to the U.S. Census, Muskingum County, where Zanesville is located, had a median household income of $37,192 in 2004, below both the Ohio and national averages. Just 12.2 percent of adults in the county have a bachelor's degree or higher, also well below the state and national averages. About 20 percent don't have a high school degree. Nevertheless, Mrs. Obama urged them to foreswear lucrative professions like corporate law or hedge fund management and go into the helping industry, even if the sacrifice is great:

As she has many times in the past, Mrs. Obama complains about the lasting burden of student loans dating from her days at Princeton and Harvard Law School. She talks about people who end up taking years and years, until middle age, to pay off their debts. "The salaries don't keep up with the cost of paying off the debt, so you're in your 40s, still paying off your debt at a time when you have to save for your kids," she says.

Why is a progressive website like the Huffington Post helping to spread the lies put out by the extreme right-wing National Review? What's this, the Neocons don't like Michelle Obama? What a suprise!

I also happen to agree with Michelle Obama that more of our talented young people need to consider going into professions like teaching, nursing, and science. Let's face it, this country has too many lawyers and not enough people in these important fields. In Florida, the shortage of qualified candidates has caused the school boards to hire Math and Science teachers from overseas. What does it say about the current state of our country that our schools are forced to advertise in India in order to attract qualified teachers?

Its standard fare for the Obama's. I think its what I loath about them the most. They tell people to be noble and good and work together-but the two of them are the most ruthless people in politics today.

for one, the article author byron york posts at huffington.

for another, it helps to know what the rats are up to.

for me - always trace the source.

byron york lives in DC, has worked for numerous top-shelf conservative rags... in short - i bet he's not pining for creature comforts. his hit piece falls flat and rings hollow.

funny thing - i grew up in birmingham and used to watch his dad anchor channel 6 news.

I grew up in B'ham, too. Remember when Byron's dad hosted "Dialing for Dollars" in the afternoons?

Michelle Obama is correct. "Let them eat cake"---as long as it isn't anyone in her household. Four years of this woman will get old very quickly.

And....Michelle Obama could lead the way by giving up her lucrative job and teach in a public school in the south side of Chicago...............Lead by example for her daughters and the country
What has stopped her if this is her true belief?

It seems the central problem here that should be remedied is not that people won't go into the "helping industry" (seriously, is that what she said?), but that they can't afford to be teachers and social workers and such. So, shouldn't the focus be on making those professions more lucrative and less stressful? Of course, that would take a lot of that great government money away from the corporatists that own and operate this country for the benefit of their own bottom lines. While Kennedy urged people to seek ways to work for their country, he didn't specifically say to become an indentured servant in the process. This would've been a good opportunity for Mrs. Obama to tell us what her husband would do, if he were President, to attract and keep all those teachers and other "helping industry" folks he says he wants to provide. I guess he's just expecting us to sign up while in a rapture from one of his great speeches.

Seeing as this article appeared in the right-wing National Review, it is not surprising that they gave it a headline ("Don't go into corporate America.") instead of the true import of her words, which is to encourage young people to go into teaching or public service.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:29 AM on 03/01/2008

She is only anti corporation in her speeches-remeber she is an Obama-speeches are used when you don't have to act.

The Clinton supporters would really love it if Obama stopped making speeches! Then we could only hear Hillary's rhetoric and her job would be so much easier. And of course, Hillary HAS "acted:" she voted in favor of the pre-emptive war in Iraq.

Words of encouragement are not going to be quite as effective as attaching a respectable wage to teaching and public service jobs.
While I might find my corporate existence alienating and most often meaningless, thank god for the opportunity to earn a decent salary with which to meet my financial obligations. Teaching is an honorable profession and likely more personally rewarding that what I do on a day-to-day basis, but even more rewarding the the ability to keep a roof over my head, put food on the table, and pay on those exorbitant student loans. I earn 4-5 times as much as any teacher, I don't face the pressure of overcrowded classrooms or the violent workplace conditions that teachers in my area confront.
When our society finally (if ever) decides to address our crumbling educational system and gets serious about making teaching a viable career option, perhaps I will reconsider. Until then, no way.

Would anyone say that JK Rowling doesn't know what it means to struggle? Yes she has money now but does that mean that she can't empathize with those who don't? Maybe she should start writing books where the corrupt powerful forces crush the little folks now? Of course not.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:18 AM on 03/01/2008

According to the dummies here, and the Conservative trolls who'll sell their mothers for a Republican vote, JK Rowling is no longer qualified to speak about the lower class. Even though she was on welfare, she now has no idea what it means to be on welfare. =P

If you have student loans to pay for law school or medical school and want to go into a helping profession then it does take almost all of your take home pay to just pay off the loan. And I'd like to compare their income to that of other people running for office. And their home value. The Obamas used his book to help pay off their loans.

I believe the Obamas have made their tax records public, and I can't speak about McCain, but of all the Democrats who were running in the primaries, Barack Obama was the least wealthy.

Another wealthy do as I say not as I do liberal. Prior to Barack's books coming out they had close to $500,000. in income yet had trouble paying back loans. Why is she able to work in corp America making over $300k yet tells us we should take low paying jobs. The truth is, in a liberals world we would have the high earners like the Obama's and the rest, no middle class.

earlier in her career Mrs. Obama left a highly compensated position at a top law firm to work for Public Allies, a group which helps young people develop skills for careers in the public sector. that sure sounds like a "helping job," she's not just talking the talk, she's walked the walk as well.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 01:46 PM on 03/01/2008

Why is she discouraging people from doing better for themselves? That is just a little weird to me. Oh yea she is a liberal, she wants everybody else to do poorly so she can earn more. Now the question is, who is going to listen to this nonsense. I know that too, the underacheivers just got the ok from Michelle to continue to do nothing with their lives, and to continue to depend on the government.

If she's so concerned with helping people, then why is Mrs. Obama worried about raking in the big bucks ? Shouldn't she be in a classroom, hospital, somewhere in the 'helping" sector or is that just for the "little people" ?

I see this Obama love fest extends to Michelle Obama. My crystal ball says that more than half posting on this forum will be back in a year if Obama is elected, bemoaning her arrogance.

These conservative smug smears always make me chuckle. (Whatsa matter?? Don't you libruls want to make any moneeey?) I am supposed to feel all outraged that Michelle Obama is not telling everyone that the corporate life is going to be their salvation in the end. I am supposed to resent her for becoming a lawyer, making some serious cash, and then telling other people it is not all that.

Ok fine. Maybe she is a hypocrite. But, name a politician who hasn't been, at least a few times.

I relate to her message. I am not cut out for the business world and, thank God, realized this when I was young. I still had misgivings and self esteem issues about not pursuing this path, because so many people in our society tell you that you are a loser or stupid if you don't get into the business sector.

Fortunately for me, I ended up dating a guy when I was in college who had one of those business jobs that was supposed to be so wonderful. I met the slime balls he worked for and had to socialize and make conversation with them, as well. I saw how glib and phony they were. I saw the back stabbing and lack of ethics it took to "succeed".

And I saw my boyfriend hate his life, loathe to get up each morning and try to drown the stress with drugs and rabid spending. Was he living the life we all wish for our kids? Was the extra money he was earning worth it, if he was angry all the time about it and spending it on dope and playthings? Would he have been better off working at something he believed in a little more? (I hesitant to say "enjoyed" because, I doubt most of us "enjoy" going to work after 20 years of anything!)

I don't know. But, even though money has always been tight, I know that I made the right choice for myself in avoiding the corporate cosa nostra. I would not makethis choice for anyone else...including my daughter. But you better believe I will give her both the upside and the downside to the corporate world when she is considering career choice.

Maybe that 1.6 million dollar home they live in is a bit taxing on their finances.

Michelle Obama says "Do as I say not as I do"

Give me a break. She and her husband are sellouts to Corporate America.

They talk a good story but we're gonna get more of the same old same old from right of center democrats that have sold out to corporate America.

Why is the Huffington Post using the National Review, a well known conservative magazine to twist what Michelle Obama is stating? Michelle Obama is correct, the cost of student loans are not factored into salary and wages and it's going to take the average person like myself a long time to pay it off. The author could not refute that fact so instead he tried to present Michelle as a hypocrite based on what she earned. She just paid off her student loans and it was only in the last few years she came into making good money at her job. The author did not know the combined cost of her student loan, home expenses or what her husband was bringing in at the time. What Michelle Obama stated is still valid. That was a really lame attempt at a smear job.

That woman should have picked another subject, the obama's were struggling on that salary,? you know these people don't have a clue what its really like to pay the bills, try raising two kids on less than 56,000 thats the reality of most in rural america, the obama'sclintons/bush's etc never ever had it rough, harvard, yale, my ass, my wife's and emergency room nurse, believe me for the work they do and the shit they put up with they are the people that should be getting the 100,000.00 not the 56,000 that after 20 years they actually get., like i said Michelle you haven't a clue, pick another subject.

Actuall, those "service" jobs you denigrate often require master degrees. Librarians get masters degrees. Teachers get masters degrees. Social workers get masters degrees. Almost everyone who wants to succeed in a profession today has to do post grad work.

i have a masters degree and I have never worked in the corporate sector.

So true. Only in the US will you find a culture that undervalues and criticizes pursuing the higher education required to compete in the world while we send a large part of our higher paying technical jobs offshore on one hand, and issue thousands of H-1 Visas to bring in qualified educated talent on the other. The situation is pathetic and back-assward. In the EU, students attend university for FREE. Education is valued and respected and provided to anyone who is serious about learning. European students do not graduate saddled with unsurmountable debt that will take 30 years to pay off.
What we have here is yet another corporate scam to keep a large part of our population stupid and indentured -- and yes, tied to those low-wage, no future service jobs...if not in jail.

What she said is true about Student Loans, many continue to pay them well into their 60's.

In case no one has noticed, Since Corporate America, no longer makes anything here in this country anymore, they instead have made American's into wage slaves, but keeping them forever in debt.

Then they leveraged the debt, bundled it and sold it to make more money off it. That was after all the point of bankrupcy reform and credit card reform, securing the future of corporate America to leverage the debt of American's into big fortunes. They fixed us by making sure there was no way to walk away from it, and got the right to charge what ever interest rate they wanted.

But now the the dollar is falling, that debt isn't worth as much anymore, and there afraid someone might figure out how they've turned us all into wage slaves, that's why they hate her, because she threatens the plutocracy's very basis.

I agree with her 100%. If I hadn't noticed that this came from the Nationalist Review, I would not have noticed that it was supposed to be a negative article about her.

Yes, you should work for your community, not for $$$. To disagree with that is to disagree with Jesus Christ, plain and simple.

And no, you should not take out student loans for an education. It's just not smart. The SallieMae Corporation is one of the most evil companies of the past century. They ruin the lives of graduates, by making it very difficult for them to pursue the dreams that sent them to college in the first place. And they increase the cost of schooling for future students - Supply and Demand 101: they subsidize your costs, allowing Universities and Colleges to charge more. Go to the library instead, it's free.

If the Nationalist Review disagrees with either of these things, they are the ones who are clueless.

I would rather be a heathen with a college degree and food on the table than a low-paid civil servant indentured. And I don't think Jesus would take issue with the fact that I did what I had to do and borrowed money to get a proper education. I think Jesus would more likely take issue with the fact that our society does not provide access to affordable, if not free education -- like they do in the Godless EU.
