Michelle Obama:

Michelle Obama: "Don't Go Into Corporate America"

National Review   |  Byron York   |   February 29, 2008 04:39 PM

I have a new story today about Michelle Obama's visit to Zanesville, Ohio, where she met with a group of women at a local day care center. According to the U.S. Census, Muskingum County, where Zanesville is located, had a median household income of $37,192 in 2004, below both the Ohio and national averages. Just 12.2 percent of adults in the county have a bachelor's degree or higher, also well below the state and national averages. About 20 percent don't have a high school degree. Nevertheless, Mrs. Obama urged them to foreswear lucrative professions like corporate law or hedge fund management and go into the helping industry, even if the sacrifice is great:

As she has many times in the past, Mrs. Obama complains about the lasting burden of student loans dating from her days at Princeton and Harvard Law School. She talks about people who end up taking years and years, until middle age, to pay off their debts. "The salaries don't keep up with the cost of paying off the debt, so you're in your 40s, still paying off your debt at a time when you have to save for your kids," she says.

I like what Michelle Obama has said regarding Corporate America. Who else is saying something like this? Practically no one.

Its nice talk-but she certainly is still corporate from the tips of her toes up to her sharp tongue.

Most people go corporate out of law school to pay the bills. 5 years later, though, and she went into the public sector.

A point often missed by lesser minds who don't understand economics is that a nation can have moneyed people like the Robber Barons of the 19th century who made Wall Street their home while the nation, as a whole, can be very poor. In fact, the wealth of a nation cannot be measured by either the number of corporations it has or how much their CEOs earn. Far from it. The wealth of a nation also includes the good parent, the teacher, the Nurse specialist, the auto mechanic, the plumber, etc. It is ironic to note that Adam Smith's book, "The Wealth of Nations" never once defined what the wealth wealth of a nation is! It is fitting that the World War II memorial in Washington is dedicated to all who worked and fought during World War II. This includes those who worked in the factories and those who fought. In this light, Michelle Obama's suggests that we cannot be a wealthy nation or a great nation according to Wall Street's values. Making a great country is a shared effort. Each of us has a part to play from the poet-songwriter to the cowboy mending a fence after a storm.

And now for the "intelligent" response from NeoCons everywhere:

"SOCIALISM! SOCIALISM! SOCIALISM! SOCIALISM! SOCIALISM! "

I beleive the point has been made. Thank you for your time. /sarcasmoff

Is this the new stradegy to take Obama down, pick at everything his wife says on the campaign trail? How much of what she actually said this time is not in the article?

There are people that do not realize how hard it will be to pay off their college loans. Also more people do need to go into public service and pay it forward. Michele can't win, either it's being reported that she's to uppity or she's a supposed flake. She's a strong independent woman and will continue to speak her mind. She didn't get where she is by being afraid of the big bad conservative boogie man.

Oh my gosh! Here we are with someone supporting an uppity woman, independent woman w;ho speaks her mind! Wonder if you will be getting called vile names or belittled for expressing such an opinion. Seems there has been quite of bit of name calling by Obamamites of those supporting that uppity, independent minded, woman who speaks her mind; i.e., Sen. Clinton.

Think about the context. If any of these women she was speaking to were to go into corporate, they would end up stuck in a go noowhere job. Long gone are the days when you could start at the bottom and work your way up. Especially for women. Isn't the National Review dumbass Cristol's mag anyway--I'll bet he wanted to call it the National Socialist Review only Hitler got there first.

We've had enough Democratic presidential candidates who were right. Now we need one who is elected. Mrs. Obama should fall back and keep quiet. She is just not as attractive or appealing as her husband, and someone should break the news to her. After November she can be right as much as she wants.

"...corporate law or hedge fund management..." is not the same as "don't go to college". I fear she might have been too aggressive about her opinion but I wasn't there, it could have been taken out of context. Being someone from a family that made less than the amount for this OH county, I understand the pressure that some young ppl have to get a college degree. Being in grad school now, I can say, higher education is decreasing the amount of "education" actually produced from many big universities and the debt is somewhat unbelievable... tuition, fees, books, housing+food ≈ >$20,000/yr for an in-state students. I got a scholarship to a private university where the tuition is now $34k/year and I still had to work part-time so that I could EAT!

If you're family can't afford to make *significant* regular payments, either the student is dependent on in-house college scholarships to survive and/or the student goes into debt anywhere from $40k-$100k by the time they graduate + INTEREST. Even you drop out half-way, you now owe >$20k +interest and you have no degree.

It's stressful.

I guess we aren't all "lucky" enough to have criminals buy are homes for us, and actually have to work to earn the things we have. Nice of her to offer her opinion though. Next time someone wants to give me 400,000 off the property I buy, I'll give her a call and ask what she thinks!

Agree. She's asking others to not be audacious about their rightful hope to do as well as she. Tone down your American dream, she says....

What the hell is she talking about? She is still pulling down over 330k and he 200k on TOP of the book deals. If she is trying to relate to the struggling middle class then I guess EVEN SHE is drunk on the Kool-Aid!!! LOL.

She was raised in Chicago. Her dad worked at a water treatment plant, her mom was a secretary.

Well kudos to her! I am talking about her present day comparisons between she and Sen. Obama and the struggling middle class. Bill Clinton was raised by a single mother who worked her ass off, what's your point?

She had a middle class upbringing, she wasn't raised in a slum. Her father was an engineer in the plant.

I gather that Byron York's point is that success should be rightfully reserved for Republicans?

Or maybe he is inferring that if you had the good sense to be born into a wealthy Republican family, you wouldn't be burdened with those student loans?

Or perhaps he just resents the idea that somebody who has risen in an American business might dare to be less than favorably impressed with today's "corporate culture"?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:38 PM on 02/29/2008

I agree. if you are smart and honorable, work for the government instead.

I’m tired of the spotlight being on these meaningless issues…if we want to go there, let’s talk about Cindy McCain’s prescription drug abuse, theft, and lack of concern about marrying someone else’s husband.

Do you think it's meaningless that an indicted criminal sold the Obama's their property for 100,000 even though they paid 500,000. for it. Obama said he showed bad judgment on that, what other bad judgment is in their past.

Get a life. The Obamas bought a 10-foot-by-150-foot piece of the lot for $104,500. An appraisal put the value of the strip at $40,500, a spokesman said, but Obama considered it fair to pay one-sixth of the original price for one-sixth of the lot.

That's a lie. The property cost 600k, the Obamas paid 100k for 1/6th of that property.
