The kid is tough no doubt about it, he loves to kill things whether fox hunting or bird shooting, animals or humans not much difference.

England should be proud of their royal soldier and their imperialistic tradition of going to war and subjugating every country in the world, only now they have America to pick up where they left off. The sun will never set on the Anglo-American Empire.

We are all proud of you Mr. Macho man for your willingness to kill humans on command; it beats the hell out of wimpy diplomacy, now you can cavort with Bush-Cheney and their fellow gung ho red neck warmongers in America.

"War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige as the warrior does today." JFK

I don't think he is very different from many young men of his age, at least here in the UK. He could quite easily, in another time and place, with no direction to his life, be swaggering about in some ridiculous street fashion selling drugs and driving stolen cars, terrorizing his neighbourhood. I am pleased that he has found a direction for himself which is socially useful, stuck to some tough training and stretched himself, something which its not that easy to do when he has as many privileges in life that he enjoys, and also has the limits on his options which he is also burdened with.

As far as I can tell, people here are proud of him, yes. He has not shirked his responsibilities, (which a few years about there was some concern that he might well go off the rails and end up like the one of those sad children of celebrities who waste so much space these days). I don't think he has just been fighting the Taliban 'on command' like some robot, by the way. He volunteered. British officer's training also encourages initiative. I am glad he has shown himself a capable soldier: I like to know that my country is able to field troops who don't fear battle and who can fight effectively. It defends my way of life, protects my family and, in the long run, saves other lives around the world as well, that there are professional soldiers capable of doing the job properly, if it has to be done at all.

I quite like the fine quote you have included from someone with the initials JFK. Is that the JFK who invaded the Bay of Pigs and sent all those soldiers to Vietnam? I wonder if what he was really saying was that wars will always be with us, because I have met a number of fine people who were conscientious objectors, but they have rarely been respected for that . Its usually some other quality or attribute that endears them to people - something positive they have done for their fellow man.

If the man you quote is really just saying that it will never happen, and war will always be with us, then I think the best I can hope for is that they are fought by people are disciplined, share my values, who know what they are doing and will make sure they win. That unfortunately, usually involves killing people who have organized themselves with varying degrees of effectiveness, to kill you.

Why is this a story? For me a few thoughts spring to mind:

In its war on terror in Afghanistan, the current US administration has contributed 'political leadership' which involves; officially lying to its allies about extraordinary rendition, Guantanamo, friendly fire, contempt for allied judicial procedures, insulting the troops that the US's allies have put into the field and generally criticizing the level of effort these allies have made. (A sport Obama Barack has just joined in with).

A couple of interesting facts, from NATO"s website: the UK had 7,800 troops deployed in Helmand Province as of February 2008 (one less as of today), and the USA had 15,000 troops as of February 2008 in Afghanistan. 14,000 of which are under the command of NATO-ISAF as of December 2007. The remaining 1,000 troops are under US command to train the Afghan National Army and to hunt Taliban leaders and al-Qaida members.

Population of UK: 60,776,238 (July 2007 est.)
Population of USA: 301,139,947 (July 2007 est.)

So, the UK has a population a fifth the size of the USA but fields an army over half the size of that put in place by the United States. Among them the third in line to the throne goes to fight. (The UK has also had members of Parliament, who are also in our army, serving). With only a couple of notable exceptions, there have been very members of the US political elite at any risk of having to live personally with the consequences of the 'war on terror' other than watching their share portfolios.

Which country would people say was proportionately making the most effort in this enterprise?

In general I don't think much of the Royals, and Im glad our tax dollars aren't going to keeping some inbred family living the high life. That being said, I think it was great to see him serve over there, and makes me realize how pathetic our own leaders are, since hardly any of the sons or daughters of our most powerful government officials (you know the people that decided to go to war) have served in either current war zones. Good for Prince Harry...

Fortunately, you don't have clue as to what you're talking about. I suggest you try reading about a topic, in this care the British Royal family, before demonstrating your ignorance.

I mean, for shit's sake, do they actually think this is 1942 and this propaganda crap will work? This is not The Good War, this is The Unnecessary War. We don't need knights and princes.

Well, we're short of photos showing GIs and Marines lounging at sidewalk cafes in Baghdad (the place of gardens) or Kabul, sipping tea. And we're still working in those war bride stories. Have they cleaned all those British bodies from past wars and campaigns? Historically, I'm sure the Afghans are oh so happy the Brits are back.

What this publicity stunt was all about, in a nutshell...

Harry's media image will certainly benefit from his adventures in Afghanistan.

Top-selling daily The Sun described him as "a man of outstanding courage who has risked having his head blown off by the Taliban so he can serve his country with his mates."

By breaking this news Drudge did us all a favor. Drudge exposed the danger this little parasite created for everyone in his unit just so he could get his bones. The subsequent press coverage is reminiscent of Paris Hilton's jail release AND just as important. Harry, go back to wining, wenching and living off english society. Nothing more to see here - please move along.

They tried to foist this little prick on the troops in Iraq. I guess they figured if they did it would be too risky and bring too much shit on other country's troops around him. Now we are subjected to this bullshit. This smells to high heaven. He did nothing worthwhile, or even slightly risky while he was there. The truth will come out. Set up job. Like the scientist the Brits whacked and called it a suicide while he was walking his dog. Happens all the time.

It looks to me like we've got a whole lot of big talkers on this site. You guys are good at trashing a kid who knew he was going to be a walking target and went into a war zone anyway.

I wonder how may of the guys who want to trash the kid have the guts to do the same. The fact is that the establishment over in the UK never wanted to send Harry in there. He pushed them again and again, publicly, to treat him like they did every other soldier and they finally agreed.

You guys need to get out more instead of listening to your own political monologues. You might just realize what pussies you are, get up from your computers, and walk the talk. Harry is just a dumb kid but at least he was ready to let his actions speak. Enough with all the soapboxing.

This whole scenario reeks of fish to me. One big PR fish or should I say fish named "Propaganda"?Already there are lots of action packed photos of Lt. Windsor on British online news sources. He's quoted as saying his mother would have been proud of him. And exactly how are we to believe one of the most stalked trophies of the world's paparazzi could disappear from the tabloids for 3 months? He's no Dick Cheney when it comes to dropping off the radar screen for months at a time. Did his people have a portfolio of photos and video of him partaking in his usual non-military social life they were planning to milk to the media during that time? Was the initial Australian report that Drudge made use of part of a plan to out him after a couple of months in order to cut short his assignment in that dangerous place in an "honorable" manner? And what of his unit? Are they still in harm's way? I'm saying this so-called story was one big photo-op for the failing British and American neo-con agenda. Oh, and one for the failing British monarchy.
