Addressing a roaring crowd of thousands at the Historic Stockyards, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton said Saturday that Texans have a chance to make up for giving America George W. Bush.

"Everyone has a right to come home, but we're just going to be happy when the moving van pulls away from the White House," Clinton said. "We need a president at Day One who can go into the Oval Office and start repairing the damage."

The crowd trickled in all morning past the metal detectors, but when Clinton approached the stage, many people were still stuck far away behind the barricades.

"I know all of you can't see me, and there are all these people we couldn't get in, but I see you," Clinton called out.

Those getting close to the stage area were wearing "Hillary for President" T-shirts and carrying signs with phrases such as "Give 'em Hill" and "The eyes of Texas are on Hillary."

"I used to say I never wanted a woman to be president, but that's one tough lady," said Genevieve Ruelas of Fort Worth, who said she was leaning toward voting for Clinton on Tuesday.

Both candidates have poured millions of dollars into campaigning across Texas, with TV and radio ads, phone banks and a slew of public appearances.

How does voting for Clinton, who has supported Bush in attacking Iraq and Iran, make amends?

Besides, Texas Democrats aren't responsible for Bush. Clinton is largely responsible for Bush by leaving such a mixed legacy in 2000, which made it harder for Gore to win.

THE CLINTONS JUST WON"T LEARN
Feb 27 2008

Published on TheHill.com on February 26, 2008.

Whether one likes, dislikes, loves, hates, admires, fears, despises, or envies them, every Clinton watcher has this in common: They are dumbfounded both by the incompetence with which Hillary has run for president and her intransigence at sticking to a failed message. In a demonstration of inability and inflexibility reminiscent of her healthcare debacle of 1993-94, Mrs. Clinton seems destined to fulfill Voltaire"s description of the Bourbon kings of France: "They learn nothing. They forget nothing."

Even now, with her back against the wall, fighting for her political career, Hillary, presumably with Bill"s acquiescence, insists on making the same mistakes that landed her in the soup. No new tactics, no new strategy, no new message emerges.

Incredibly, both Clintons are harping, once more, on the theme of experience to carry the day. No matter that it hasn"t worked since before Iowa; they repeat the same mantra endlessly " that Hillary can "hit the ground running" on "Day One." Will they ever realize that voters grasp two essential facts:

(a) That Hillary"s experience is derivative of Bill"s and her claims to his achievements are largely invented and spurious, and

(b) That the real edge she has in experience is her ability to repeat the strategies, tactics, message, fundraising models and campaign style of the 1990s, something modern voters reject emphatically?

Why, after losing 24 states, do Hillary and Bill fail to get these messages? Are they saving up these insights for their memoirs?

And why do the Clintons persist in running a negative campaign even when they can"t find anything to be negative about? Alienating voters with their abrasive attacks without attracting them with their content, they throw pitty-pat punches accusing Obama one day of plagiarism for borrowing speech lines from his close and consenting friend and the next day for accurately describing Hillary"s healthcare plan as requiring sanctions to make those who do not wish to sign up do so against their will (albeit for policies Mrs. Clinton deems to be "affordable").

If you are going to pay the price of going negative, throw real punches. Hit Obama with big negatives. You take the backlash for going negative in order to pass the lethal message on to the voters. But if you don"t have any negatives to throw and your detectives have, indeed, come up empty, then stop trying to go negative. Stop alienating people to no purpose.

But as obvious as these observations are, they seem to be lost on Bill and Hillary and the geniuses who are running her campaign. Despite defeat after defeat, we still hear about experience and still get a daily dose of so-what attacks on Obama.

The deeper reality of this campaign is that Obama has shown, by his incredible skill in the way he is waging it, an ability to handle himself and a talent for the demands of center stage that show, experienced or not, he is better able to be president than the inept Hillary.

We are watching a grim re-enactment of all of the character traits that led Hillary to decompose in the healthcare debate of her husband"s first term. The blind reliance on a guru-delivered strategy, the religious insistence on following the same rhetorical line even when it obviously isn"t working, the inflexibility in adapting to one"s opposition, and the inability to formulate new strategies or to improvise tactics when her pre-conceptions are found to be so obviously faulty " this is Hillary at her worst.

As citizens, we are entitled to watch Obama"s skill, leadership style, and savvy sophistication and contrast it with Hillary"s doctrinaire insistence on approaches that aren"t working and to conclude that Hillary would be a disaster as president and that Obama would be pretty good. We can, at least, conclude that the same tenacity that led Johnson into Vietnam and may be inducing Bush to risk his party, his reputation and the attitudes of a generation in Iraq may be abundantly present in Hillary.

But we are driven to wonder: Does Hillary"s rigidity stem from a false conviction or from an absence of sufficient imagination and creativity to formulate an alternative course?

excellent analysis PTTY . . . "But we are driven to wonder: Does Hillary"s rigidity stem from a false conviction or from an absence of sufficient imagination and creativity to formulate an alternative course?" the latter I think . . . hillary is too owned by lobby groups, relies to heavily on focus groups has completely lost any inner convictions . . . her vote for the Iraq war showed that; her vote for kly/lieberman . .. she is incapable of moving America away from the same old same old ossifying status quo . . .she has repeatedly shown herself to be a follower with poor judgement and not a leader .. . I don't think she has the guts or the imagination nor the creativity to formulate an alternative course . . .

Why should Texas make up for Bush? He wasn't born there any more than Hillary was born in New York. Should we blame New Yorkers for her negative campaign?

Actually the blame should be laid where it belongs - at the Clintons feet. If Bill had not lied about his zipper under oath, if the 2 of them had not spent the entire 8 years going from one scandal to the next, people would not have been disgusted with the Democrats and voted in Bush in the 1st place.

Voters in Ohio: Bill Clinton was the force that pushed NAFTA into law, with the backing of Republicans. Now Hillary wants you to forget that your lost jobs are a result of his actions (which she promoted at that time and for years afterward).

What message do you want to send her on Tuesday?

It's a bit hostile of Hillary to blame all Texans for GWB. I guess with her AIPAC affiliation so deep and strong Hillary is into collective punishment.

LOOK AT HER RECORD
Submitted by melanie simpson on Thu, 02/21/2008 - 1:13am.

Go to the congressional Library online and look up the legislation Hillary sponsored that actually passed into law. There is not one major piece of legislation. Senator Joe Biden pointed this out during a debate - which is what prompted me to look it up for myself. She has a big talent for claiming credit not due to her.

Then do the same for Barack. It is stunning that he is being knocked on substance - since his legislative record is so much more impressive in half the time. Some highlights:

Lugar-Obama Act to decrease nuclear and conventional weapons proliferation around the world.

Coburn-Obama Transparency Act transparency in federal spending, found at httP://www.usaspending.gov

Cosponsored the Healthy Kids Act of 2007 and the State Children's Health Insurance

Program (SCHIP) Reauthorization Act of 2007 to ensure that more American children have affordable health care coverage.

Obama worked to pass a number of laws in Illinois and Washington to improve the health of women. His accomplishments include creating a task force on cervical cancer, providing greater access to breast and cervical cancer screenings, and helping improve prenatal and premature birth services.

As a member of the U.S. Senate Committee on Veterans' Affairs, Obama passed legislation to improve care and slash red tape for our wounded warriors recovering at places like Walter Reed. He passed laws to help homeless veterans and offered an innovative solution to prevent at-risk veterans from falling into homelessness.

Obama passed legislation to stop a VA review of closed PTSD cases that could have led to a reduction in veterans' benefits. He passed an amendment to ensure that all service members returning from Iraq are properly screened for traumatic brain injuries

Congo: Obama and Leahy successfully passed an amendment to provide $13 million in assistance to the DRC for military reform and election assistance. The bill also provided the the US policy is to oppose and fight against the rape and killings of women that is a particular horror there. Obama has recently sent a letter to Sec. Rice demanding a report of their efforts there.

Darfur
Introduced Patriot Employer Act, August 2007, to reward companies for keeping jobs in the US

As a member of the Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions committee, Obama helped pass legislation in the recent improvements to the Higher Education Act to increase the maximum Pell Grant award to $5,10.

Obama passed legislation with Senator Jim Talent (R-MO) to give gas stations a tax credit for installing E85 ethanol refueling pumps.

Obama sponsored an amendment that became law providing $40 million for commercialization of a combined flexible fuel vehicle/hybrid car within five years.
Congressional ethics legislation, called the Gold Standard of ethics reform, passed by

Obama and Feingold that ending subsidized corporate jet travel, mandating disclosure of lobbyists' bundling of contributions, and enacting strong new restrictions of lobbyist-sponsored trips. The Washington Post wrote in an editorial, "The final package is the strongest ethics legislation to emerge from Congress yet."

Obama has introduced and helped pass bipartisan legislation to limit the abuse of no-bid federal contracts.

Please understand how Illinois Senate works!
Submitted by melanie simpson on Fri, 02/22/2008 - 10:46pm.

I understand your confusion - I was confused on this too - until I read an article in the Times last weekend. I refer you to the NY Times article by Abner Mikva, who was White House Counsel to the Clintons, as well as an Illinois State legislator.

Link: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/16/opinion/16mikva.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=pre...

I recommend the entire article and found it particularly useful in understanding the function of those present votes: Here is my brief recap on that:

Basically the Illinois Senate differs from Congress, and most other State legislatures, in that it requires a "constitutional majority" to pass a bill. The Senate is comprised of 59 members, so to pass a bill requires 30 yes votes. If a bill receives 29 yes votes, and the rest of the senators vote present - the bill fails. Thus, in effect, present votes = no votes.

All your examples come from the State Senate, where Senator Obama was considered to be "an outspoken member of the Illinois Senate, and not someone known for dodging questions, whether they were on ethics, police responsibility, women"s choice or any other hot-button issue." (NY TIMES)

As for transparency - he is the candidate who has released all his tax return information, his earmark information, his donor lists etc. Further to that the COBURN-OBAMA Transparency Act is a brilliant piece of legislation, showing the kind of creative imagination we need leading our country to get us out of the mess we are now in.

Talk about transparency in government - this bill has created a free, searchable website that will track approximately $1 trillion in federal grants, contracts, earmarks and loans. It gives near real-time updates of data concerning federal spending, and provides the opportunity for the users to post comments and provide feedback about the website in a public, online user community.
For the first time, most government spending data will be searchable by contractor or grantee and by congressional district.

In a nutshell the American People can track where the money is going for themselves. I think that is a change I can believe in!

There is NO WAY in HELL to make up for the Bush administration. It will take many, many years to even get the US back to where it was 8 years ago. The Bushies dragged the US into bankruptcy, made US a laughingstock around the world. Every time Georgie opens his mouth, his ignorance and lack of intellect shows. The WH will have to be fumigated to rid it of the stench of these repubs. It has been turned into a frat house. Rove, plus many others belong behind bars for treason. How can a failure like Georgie have been installed as president? Rove never graduated from college, yet became, through manipulation of Georgie, a powerhouse in Washington. "Genius"? Not in my opinion, not even close. "Evil" ? Definitely. Georgie "attended" Yale and Harvard, but there is NO WAY he could have graduated. Bought and paid for, those are his diplomas.
