Times Online:

AS Barack Obama enters the final stages of the fight for the Democratic presidential nomination, he is preparing to detach the core voters of John McCain, the likely Republican nominee, with the same ruthless determination with which he has peeled off Hillary Clinton's supporters.

The scene is set for a tussle between the two candidates for the support of some of the sharpest and most independent minds in politics. Obama is hoping to appoint cross-party figures to his cabinet such as Chuck Hagel, the Republican senator for Nebraska and an opponent of the Iraq war, and Richard Lugar, leader of the Republicans on the Senate foreign relations committee.

This is a good start. Acknowledging the other half of the aisle is what Bush failed so miserably to do and I applaud his considerations.

Lincoln Chafee would be a better choice than Chuck Hagel, although technically now, Chafee is now an independent.

Jtt:

Sadly, the only thing that Repubs did that worked out well was to start this Invasion of Iraq and make BILLIONS for them and their Halliburton, Big OIL and Blackwater friends. It's gonna take YEARS to fix the other clusterf**k stuff they did.

What an effing legacy to leave for our future generations!

So did Bill Clinton.

That said, I would prefer that Obama not pick Republicans, because they are all utterly depraved.

Every single last one of them?

Well, yeah, thinking back over the last 7 1/2 years and perhaps the last 13 months of obstruction even moreso, maybe you're right.

We have got to mend the divide somewhere at somepoint. At least Barack will extend the branch. If we don't mend the riff then the nation will head down a deadend road to self-destruction and civil unrest. There is to much at stake not to reach across the divide

Not all Republicans are bad. There are good republicans and bad republicans, there are good democrats and bad democrats. It must be an individual basis
