Clinton Camp\'s Election Eve Strategy: Attack!

Clinton Camp's Election Eve Strategy: Attack!

Sounding at times optimistic and at time incredulous, the Clinton campaign on Monday used every tool at its disposal in an effort to push the senator to victory in Tuesday's primary elections.

No attack line went unearthed. During a conference call with reporters, spokesmen Howard Wolfson and Phil Singer as well as chief strategist Mark Penn hit Obama on issues ranging from national security, to his relationship with indicted Chicago political insider Antoin Rezko, to what is now being dubbed as "NAFTA-gate."

All the while, they insisted that the pressure to win in Ohio and Texas was on Obama, not Clinton, who has lost 11 straight primary elections

"Let's say we do win in Texas and Ohio," said Wolfson. "Then we'd we will be able to say that we've won Texas, Ohio, New York, California, Massachusetts, Arkansas, Tennessee, New Mexico, and Arizona, a diverse set of states from coast to coast, north, south, east, and west, red and blue... Senator Obama came into Ohio and Texas with every possible advantage. He outspent us massively. His allies outspent us massively. He and his allies have declared the race over so many times I can't even count. And despite that we have been successful."

Added Penn, somewhat defiantly: "We expect that on Wednesday morning, the momentum of Barack Obama will be significantly blunted..."

The Monday morning Clinton attack was more than just the hour-long conference call. Even before the clock struck noon, the campaign had sent out 15 emails to reporters on, passing along damaging news articles concerning Obama, offering up condemning Clinton statements, and suggesting questions the media should ask the Illinois Senator.

At 10:19 am, Singer wrote to the list: "Here's a quick rundown of items for your radar since we're killing you guys with email this morning." His note was followed by stories of Rezko's trial as well as video clip of Obama denying that his staff had told the Canadian government that his criticism of NAFTA was not entirely sincere (a memo surface on Tuesday showing that an aide had discussed the matter with a Canadian embassy official).

The campaign would send seven subsequent emails.

In addition, the Clinton camp launched a new ad this morning taking Obama to task for not holding a hearing on Afghanistan despite heading the Senate Subcommittee on European Affairs.

It was the second spot in the last week that directly questioned Obama's national security credentials. The first, the now-famous "3 A.M" ad, the campaign credited with fundamentally changing the state of the races in Ohio and Texas.

"Now, I think you'll be able to imagine many things Senator McCain will be able to say," Sen. Clinton said Saturday, while on the campaign trail. "He's never been the president, but he will put forth his lifetime of experience. I will put forth my lifetime of experience. Senator Obama will put forth an [anti-war] speech he made in 2002."

Taken together, the attacks raised the specter that the Clinton team thought McCain was better suited than Obama to be commander in chief. No, said Wolfson, offering a fleeting bit of praise for the Illinois senator. "If Barack Obama happens to be a nominee of this party, there is going to be enthusiastic support of his candidacy from this campaign. And the fact that John McCain wants us to stay in Iraq for 100 years raises questions about how he would [operate as president]."

As voters go to the polls tomorrow, one hopes that they will consider which candidate has pledged to restore the constitution back to before the damage that Bush as done to it. This choice is clear:

The status of our constitution, which guarantees and protects our rights, should be the number one issue. Without it, we are all in danger.

Has anyone wondered how frequently nearly all forms of media, refer to HRC as a 'fighter'? Apparently she is such a good 'fighter', that her campaign has now emulated this character trait and is now fighting within itself.

I dare suggest that the country is simply tired of fighting. I think we are tired of fighting this war, we are tired of fighting the Republicans at every turn and we are now growing tired of fighting each other for this nomination.

I am not suggesting that we necessarily surrender on any point. However, when there may be a general national mood against constant fighting, would it be any wonder that the message, of 'Hope' and 'Yes We Can', grows to become so appealing.

I must admit that I am a strong Obama supporter, but lately I started to question why specifically I support him.

Point for point, there is not much difference between the remaining candidates on policy issues. Further, I value HRC's 35 years of life experience and everything it can bring to the table, while simultaneously, I am not concerned about Obama's relative lack of life experience. HRC is, no offense intended, older.

But the argument of experience, to me is a non-issue. Did Kennedy have enough experience? How about Reagan? Better yet, how about Bush?

Ultimately, why I support Obama, is more a question of where I believe the country to be emotionally and psychologically, rather than what are the substantive differences between the candidates.

We are mired in a seemingly endless war, we are fast approaching a recession (if not already in one), the middle class is being torn to shreds, the gap between rich and poor is ever-widening, the Congress seems to be perpetually in a state of inertia (except for the stimulus package), Bush & Cheney have made a mockery of the Constitution, our phone calls and emails are being intercepted, the rest of the world hates us, the dollar is practically worthless...and the list goes on and on...

And HRC wants to fight. For what, I ask? There is not much left!!!

How about we start things anew, instead. How about we get this country back on track using only the same tool that defeated Nazism and rebuilt Europe, or put a man on the moon, or simply gets each of us out of bed in the morning...Hope!!!

Thanks for summarizing Clinton malfeasance so ably. You do an amazing job of presenting the shorthand facts to devastating effect.

Clinton is fortunate Obama is too clean an energy to stoop to the depths required to provide an accurate portrayal of the Clinton years.

Now that the gloves are off, I wonder how the feminists feel about this gender-neutral power-lusting harridan that's emerged in Ohio and Texas.

Wake up Dem Party. Reject the dirt, fear, manipulation, lies. Say no. Shut the Clintons down and reclaim the Party.

No Democrat has ever run such a filthy, dirty campaign against another Democrat. It is shameful.

I find it humorous that Hillary would put out an ad "taking Obama to task for not holding a hearing on Afghanistan despite heading the Senate Subcommittee on European Affairs." I would be careful if I were her considering she is a member of the Senate armed services committee.

In February the committee held two hearings on Afghanistan. On February 8, it focused on appropriations for U.S. military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Witnessed by Secretary of Defense Robert Gates. Eight days later, the committee zeroed in on U.S. strategy in Afghanistan, holding a two-part hearing examining recent reports on Afghanistan. Key witnesses included senior officials from the State Department and the Pentagon responsible for the administration's Afghanistan policy. Long story short, she attended neither. Where was she.....on the campaign trail. Shame on you Hillary Clinton!

This is where the msm fail to do their jobs.

Why is it they never seem to have the facts at hand to question candidates?

Heck they never question the Killer Chimp!

If you have a news "network" shouldn't you have staff at the ready with the information

a host needs while doing interviews?

What else are commercial breaks good for?

It's sad when John McCain, Hillary Clinton, and Rush Limbaugh all have the same, unified purpose. Those 3 all despise each other, yet they have this secret pact to avoid attacks on one another and focus on bringing Obama down. We get hit with false accusations from all sides left and right. All because Obama is talking real change and hope to the American people.

Do you smell smoke? Because I do - it's coming from Hillary's slash and burn politics.

Stand with Obama tomorrow and don't let these false attacks bring us down.

There's a way to challenge someone and there's a way to challenge someone. Hillary comes off as if she loathes Sen. Obama. It is pretty obvious to me. This young Sen. comes in and steals her fire.

So, she resorts to that works for some people. They see her saying he's all about speeches and they believe it without looking at his record. What the hell has she done but vote for one war and vote to possibly get us in another one. She whines, and yells and screams at her opponent. I've never seen a candidate yell at their candidate as if they were a child before.

Hillary will keep going after tomorrow. She won't stop because she believes in her heart that this nomination belongs to her. BUT, I will do whatever I can to stop her. Tomorrow, I will be at the caucus in Dallas to assure the additional delegates for Sen. Obama. I happily cast my vote for Sen. Obama on Friday. All she's shown is the kind of president I don't want to have.

In reality, there is no way Hillary can win the nomination unless there is an all-out war in the Democratic Party, which would seriously undermine any attempt to beat the Republicans in the fall. However, she continues to ratchet up the negative ads against Obama in the sleaziest nomination campaign the country has seen in quite some time. What is her end-game? To do as much as possible to submarine Obama's chances against McCain. She wants to run again in 2012 but can't if BHO becomes president. Selfishness and shamelessness are reaching ever newer levels as she attempts to suppress turnout. How low can she go? My sense is that we haven't hit bottom yet...

Unfortunately, you're right about not having hit bottom. If the PTB don't rein her in she may singlehandedly give McCain the White House in November.

"Selfishness" and "shamelessness" about sums it up.

"As Hillary Clinton battles to keep her presidential bid alive, she may be getting help from an unlikely source: conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh.

Limbaugh has been actively urging his Texas listeners to cross over and vote for Clinton in that state's open primary Tuesday, arguing it helps the Republicans if the Democratic race remains unsettled for weeks to come."
