Today on Oprah Drew Barrymore announced she was donating $1 million to the World Food Programme, to which she is an ambassador.

From Oprah's website:

Charlie's Angel Drew Barrymore is a real-life angel as an Ambassador Against Hunger for the World Food Programme (WFP). The actress decided to take on global hunger after a 2005 trip to the slums of Nairobi, Kenya, where kids live in shacks and often go to school with empty stomachs.

When disasters like the Indian Ocean tsunami strike, people who have lost everything rely on the WFP to deliver food assistance. The WFP is the world's frontline organization in the fight against hunger, and every year, it helps feed more than 70 million people in nearly 80 of the world's poorest countries.

The WFP has a dream--to feed 10 million more children in Africa by Thanksgiving Day. If every Oprah Show viewer gives $50 to help fill a child's cup for a year, they will reach that target.

Even a small donation will go a long way. Porridge, rice or beans--it takes just 25 cents to fill one of the red cups WFP uses to give hungry kids regular meals. This food will not only feed bodies and minds, it will transform lives.

That will be the day that Hannity or O'Reilly do anything quite!! There are so many millionaires out there that could do the same as Drew, but rather lavish themselves with six thousand dollar gowns and such. Thank you Drew Barrymore and God bless you!!

Drew's Covergirl ads were a major sponsor of her appearance the Oprah show.

Call me cynical, but I suspect she waived her fee from CoverGirl, and the company put up the million, just to be on OPrah.

Good for Drew, but did she really use her own dough. Out of pocket?

It still can't hold a candle to the widow's mite.

Drew took her life in her own hands and came back from alcoholism and drug addiction too be a contributing human being. The numbers of young women who wallow in their own narcissism and overblown opinion of themselves could well take note With initials like BS. PH and LL being some of the aforementioned

This is a wonderful answer to the Bush administration's refusal for at least four years in a row to fund birth control measures for women in third world countries because he thinks it will lead to - GASP! - sex.

Fact? Then my absolute respect for Ms Barrymore. That she should go public with it is appropriate if she is trying to lead by example. What a welcome relief from typical "celebretard" hi-jinx. An expression of "nobles-oblige" almost. Luv, get a polli-sci education, the leap from the stage to political action is always a possibility. Male theatrical figures do it successfully with some regularity. You seem to have made your bona fides, now grow in your role. This can only make your family very proud.

Call me a fool, but I just adore Drew Barrymore - everything she does seems true, transparant, and heartfelt. If only more celebrities would make such alleged "public relations", er, gestures. Perhaps hse'll inspire others to do the same. The world can certainly use more Barrymores and Bonos.

And oh, to have been Dave Letterman on that infamous night when Drew danced for him...

The intent is there; but most of us know that a U.N. sponsored hunger program is just a way to fill the coffers of the IMF and World Bank and pay off warlords for the further seizure of land and resources. Although most of the people on the ground really do good work, why did we come to a point where we trust the U.N.?
