Geraldo Won't Shake "Shameful" "Hate-Monger" Lou Dobbs' Hand

Geraldo Rivera appeared on "The View" today to promote his new book, His Panic, which prompted a discussion of how Americans fear immigrants. He explained that this fear is "a nativist reaction that started at the grassroots" and that it is "driven by the most savage talk radio campaign in history." When asked to name names, Geraldo targeted Rush Limbaugh and Lou Dobbs (who, incidentally, makes his debut as a talk radio host today).

"Lou Dobbs of CNN has been shameful in his hate-mongering," Geraldo said. "I would not shake his hand because this is a man that's done more damage to the cause of sensibile, comprehensive reform than anyone with a microphone."

I am a liberal, and I am against comprehensive immigration reform. Anyone who cares about labor rights should be against CIR. How can labor rights be protected if corporations are free to subvert labor laws. I also agree with the comment that this is predominantly a Mexican issue. The government of Mexico and the rich Mexicans benefit from the remissions sent by illegals so they don't have to improve government services for the poor. This is also an environmental and financial issue. We are suffering from over development to build new housing. And, part of the subprime crisis is banks giving loans to illegals without requesting any documentation. Absolutely ridiculous.

I heard Geraldo Rivera on public radio last week make the case for giving citizenship to all of the twenty million illegals (invaders) in this country.

Rivera's plan called for all of the illegals to show up at Walmarts across the country to be fingerprinted, have documents reviewed and be given a green card with a photo ID.

On the surface it sounded somewhat alright, until the host asked what would Geraldo do if only twelve million showed up. Would Geraldo then deport the other eight million.

Geraldo would not directly answer the question. His ramble suggested that these eight million would be given an indefinite time period to show up.

So Geraldo's bottom line is, we should just leave the borders open to whom ever wishes to show up at a Walmart parking lot. In another words Geraldo has no plan.

Geraldo is just as full of shit today as he was thirty years ago.

There is nothing racist about stopping people from entering this country illegally.I think we should adopt Mexico's immigration laws, then you would see what getting tough on immigration is. What I do not understand is, some say this is good for our country. My question is, how good were these people for Mexico? Not only did they not do anything for Mexico, they did not have the guts to stand up and fight the Mexican government for what they wanted. I believe in what Lou Dobbs is doing, he is the ONLY one discussing the middle class problems in this country and in part, this is related to the illegal immigration.
I come from a LEGALLY immigrant family and I believe that this country is made up of immigrants in the first place.
I have nothing against immigration, and I would like to see us allow more LEGAL immigrants in. But I am extremely against ILLEGAL immigration and I find Lou to be the only one bringing this up over and over hoping someone will listen.

Try to look at things as if you were a manager in charge of running this country. One of your responsibilities would be to know where we are in performance over many factors with competing countries. The birth-rate of white america is 1.8, while the replacement ratio needed for a population to be able to replace itself as it's peoples age and die, is 2.1-2.2. In Europe and America, in order for the retirement system to work, in order for there to be enough nurses, doctors and other healthcare specialists, in order for there to be enough young military age people, in order for there to be enough skilled labor, not just educated labor, it's population birthrate should be above 2.1-2.2, but, like the U.S., their white birthrate is below the replacement rate. Minorities in both continents are out-birthing whites, 2.6 for hispanics in the U.S. and similarly for Muslims in Europe. As Democrats and liberals, we are for better working conditions for illegals because if we force corporations to have similar working conditions for ALL workers, then there will be no financial advantage for them to hire illegals, thus, less illegals here. On a larger picture, both continents will have to find some way to legalize the current illegals since the financial trend, ACROSS THE BOARD, is that there won't be enough people to support the aging generation. Mass poverty and healthcare for only those who can afford it is the other option. Hope you gots money.

GLENN SPENCER, head of the anti-immigration American Patrol, has been interviewed at least twice on the (Dobb's) show, on Jan. 7 and June 4, 2004. Spencer's Web site is jammed with anti-Mexican vitriol and he pushes the idea that the Mexican government is involved in a secret plot to take over the Southwest -- facts never mentioned on Dobbs' show. Spencer's group is regarded as a hate group by both the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Anti-Defamation League. Spencer has spoken at least twice to the white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens, which has described blacks as "a retrograde species of humanity," and once to American Renaissance, a group that contends that blacks are genetically inferior to whites. Dobbs has never reported those ties, or mentioned Spencer's more wild-eyed contentions, such as his prediction that "thousands will die" in a supposedly forthcoming Mexican invasion. I'm an immigrant, I'm a Latino from South America. I don't like illegal immigration, does this make me a hate monger?
I'm sorry, but Dobbs has points. People who want our borders fixed don't hate immigrants, we just want to secure the border and end illegal immigration.
And let's face it, illegal immigration is not a Latino issue, its mainly a Mexican issue; to some extent few other central American countries and to even a lesser extend, some other countries. But for the vast majority, its the Mexican immigrants that favor open border b/c its them that benefit. I have relatives back home that want to immigrate to the US, but they have to wait for visa approval.

To this, I have great insight. (in the interest of complete disclosure, I will tell you that I know illegal immigrants, I'm friends with some, I've worked along side some, and my family employs some- and lets all admit this, most of us have hired/or benefited from illegal immigrants)

So, here it is, the dirty little secret is that Mexico is awful towards illegal immigrants. I have worked with Mexicans from Chiapas and they all told me stories of how the Mexican military rounds up anyone that might be from Guatemala and the military takes them accross the border and dumps them off. While Americans are having discussions about proper treatment and possible consitutional issues regarding the handling of illegal immigrants, Mexico rounds up anyone who is not Mexican like a cattle, and gets rid of them.

Furthermore, there is a Latino group called Los Tigres Del Norte, they have a song called "Tres veces mojado" ("three times wet"- as in, having to cross three national border in order to get to the US) the song expresses the very common sentiment amongst latinos that its Mexico that its truly the worst when it comes to treating illegal immigrants. - in contrast to popular believe, it is not the US

Read Thom Hartmann's book: "Unequal Protection-- The Rise of Corporate America and the theft of human rights". It will spell out for you how Corporations rule the politics and politicians of this land and why/how they did it and are doing it. EVERY SINGLE ISSUE is affected by our ability to vote into office those whom we want to represent us on any particular issue. When corporatioins trump the people, as they do on immigration, healthcare, war, etc., then we have the status quo and no amount of blaming illegals, or any other monster scared up by the likes of Lou Dobbs will change it. Geraldo recently went through the same riff with Bill O'Reilly, but he gave him a warm, friendly pat on the back. Dobbs is a bit obsessed and I can find points of disagreement on points of substance and style. However immigration arguments very quickly move from reality to emotion so that they then have noting to do with facts like whether we should protect borders and enforce, change, or ignore existing immigration laws. Only sensible LAWS will silence the most extreme voices that would pry children from their mother's arms. Now there's an emotional can of worms that even the most extreme might not have thought through completely...even Dobbs.
