Geraldo Won't Shake "Shameful" "Hate-Monger" Lou Dobbs' Hand

Geraldo Rivera appeared on "The View" today to promote his new book, His Panic, which prompted a discussion of how Americans fear immigrants. He explained that this fear is "a nativist reaction that started at the grassroots" and that it is "driven by the most savage talk radio campaign in history." When asked to name names, Geraldo targeted Rush Limbaugh and Lou Dobbs (who, incidentally, makes his debut as a talk radio host today).

"Lou Dobbs of CNN has been shameful in his hate-mongering," Geraldo said. "I would not shake his hand because this is a man that's done more damage to the cause of sensibile, comprehensive reform than anyone with a microphone."

Geraldo may not be everyone's cup of tea. From time to time, I think he's nothing more than a self-serving, grandstander. But, in this matter, I say 'Bravo!'
Lou Dobbs is, pure and simple, a demogogue. He demonizes Mexicans BECAUSE HE CAN!!! They have no way to fight him or his scurrilous rants.
Dobbs is a one-trick pony whose vitriol verges on hate. He compartmentalizes all Mexicans who've crossed the border illegally. To him, they're not human beings. They're easy targets for his self-promotion. They're 'ALIENS", viruses that've contaminated his United States!
Geraldo, no matter what you may think of him, at least humanizes these people and gives them credit for doing the kind of work that Dobbs is incapable of acknowledging.
I'm not naive enough to think that we're getting Mexico's best and brightest. But I'm at least not so hate-filled that I can't think these people have made genuine contributions to our economy. They're the ones who keep salads from costing twenty-bucks a pop and kids named Lance and Heather from breaking their freaking backs in the hot Imperial Valley sun.
Screw Lou. I hope he can at least see past the 'tainted' blood of his wife, Debbie Segura, which the last time I checked, was Latina.

In all fairness to Lou Dobbs, his demonizing isn't limited to just Mexicans. Before Latinos, blacks suffered his wrath, and continue to do so, but now that hispanics are the largest minority the target is on their backs.

Geraldo is part Jewish, part Puerto Rican of Spanish descent. He doesn't have much in common with, say, Mexican-Americans in the Southwest. His attempts at pan-ethnic pandering will most likely fail because most of those who'd buy into his pandering will want one of their own, i.e., a Chicano like Antonio Villaraigosa. And, some of those on the extreme end of his target market (like those at aztlan.net) are anti-Semitic. I'd imagine that even many Puerto Ricans would consider him nothing more than an opportunist who's simply trying to sell books.

No doubt your definition of "racist" is, for the most part, "anybody I don't like whose skin is lighter than mine". Dobbs is going to bat for the poorest Americans, whose wages are artificially depressed by illegal immigration. Those poorest Americans are, disproportionately, people of colour. As for Rivera. He's an embarrassment to journalists and Latinos everywhere.

I am a liberal. I agree with Lou Dobbs in some ways on immigration, but stopped watching because he went overboard. Immigration every night was a bit much. We need to keep the issue in the minds of the public and pols, but watching him go all apopletic with his tirades was pitiful.

I cant figure out this guy. I live in Canada so I never see him on tv but I've always seen him as a right-wing fox news, sensationalist, egotistical nut job...
