L.A. Times Captures Clinton Camp In-Fighting, Fingers Bill, Penn

One emerging narrative of how the Clinton campaign ended up going from front-runner status to late-stage delegate scavengers is that hers was a good candidacy that got nibbled to death by the quacks with whom she chose to surround herself. Too often, the offstage players have brought unto themselves too much of the wrong sort of attention: the apparently profligate spending of Patti Solis Doyle, Howard Wolfson's constant denigration of whole voter slates as unimportant, and the lack of an apparent post-Super Tuesday plan are some of the examples of internal campaign failings that have put a drag on Clinton's candidacy.

A new article in this morning's L.A. Times continues this narrative, capturing a campaign so riven with infighting that the only thing the story lacks is an admonishment from Merkin Muffley that you can't fight in the war room. The article casts a wide net in general, but more or less comes up fingering two figures for the most blame: former President Bill Clinton and campaign strategist Mark Penn.

Some of this is hardly surprising. Bill Clinton's decision to mount a not-very-charming charm offensive in South Carolina is ripped apart again, depicted by a campaign aide as a quixotic "one-man mission" in territory that had already turned fallow, culminating in the former President's "Jesse Jackson" remark, which only ensured that the negatives from South Carolina would follow the New York Senator elsewhere.

But largely, the Times article is more bad news for Mark Penn. The big pull-quote from last week's New York Observer article on all things Penn was his confident negation of the need to emphasize Hillary Clinton's softer side: "Oh, come on, being human is overrated." In the Times' recounting, however, it looks like even that belief came out of some focus group:

The campaign produced a 60-second television ad before the Iowa caucuses that attempted to do so. In it, Clinton told the story of her mother leaving Chicago on a train at age 8, accompanied only by her 3-year-old sister, to live with grandparents in Los Angeles. It was a poignant story that campaign aides hoped would also highlight Clinton's interest in children's issues.

But Penn tested the advertisement with voters. He reported back that it did not play well in Iowa, and it never aired -- leaving some aides grumbling that an opportunity had been missed.

Now, according to the Times Penn is trying to downplay his involvement with the campaign, essentially sidelining himself as an unimportant player, and placing blame at the feet of his colleagues:

Penn said in an e-mail over the weekend that he had "no direct authority in the campaign," describing himself as merely "an outside message advisor with no campaign staff reporting to me."

"I have had no say or involvement in four key areas -- the financial budget and resource allocation, political or organizational sides. Those were the responsibility of Patti Solis Doyle, Harold Ickes and Mike Henry, and they met separately on all matters relating to those areas."

Wolfson counters Penn's interpretation in the Times' story, saying "that it was Penn who had top responsibility for both its strategy and message."

UPDATE: Howard Wolfson called in to Morning Joe to defend Penn as an "integral part" of the campaign's success. Watch it:

The campaign "resets"? Excuse me. Does that mean Obama's lead of over 100 pledged delegates magically disappears so long as Clinton wins by at least 1% in Texas and Ohio? What are these dudes smoking?

Oh, and the uncritical way that the reporter echoed the Clinton campaign's assertion of this fallacy certainly does smack of media bias... but not _against_ her...

Has anyone wondered how frequently nearly all forms of media, refer to HRC as a 'fighter'? Apparently she is such a good 'fighter', that her campaign has now emulated this character trait and is now fighting within itself.

I dare suggest that the country is simply tired of fighting. I think we are tired of fighting this war, we are tired of fighting the Republicans at every turn and we are now growing tired of fighting each other for this nomination.

I am not suggesting that we necessarily surrender on any point. However, when there may be a general national mood against constant fighting, would it be any wonder that the message, of 'Hope' and 'Yes We Can', grows to become so appealing.

I must admit that I am a strong Obama supporter, but lately I started to question why specifically I support him.

Point for point, there is not much difference between the remaining candidates on policy issues. Further, I value HRC's 35 years of life experience and everything it can bring to the table, while simultaneously, I am not concerned about Obama's relative lack of life experience. HRC is, no offense intended, older.

But the argument of experience, to me is a non-issue. Did Kennedy have enough experience? How about Reagan? Better yet, how about Bush?

Ultimately, why I support Obama, is more a question of where I believe the country to be emotionally and psychologically, rather than what are the substantive differences between the candidates.

We are mired in a seemingly endless war, we are fast approaching a recession (if not already in one), the middle class is being torn to shreds, the gap between rich and poor is ever-widening, the Congress seems to be perpetually in a state of inertia (except for the stimulus package), Bush & Cheney have made a mockery of the Constitution, our phone calls and emails are being intercepted, the rest of the world hates us, the dollar is practically worthless...and the list goes on and on...

And HRC wants to fight. For what, I ask? There is not much left!!!

How about we start things anew, instead. How about we get this country back on track using only the same tool that defeated Nazism and rebuilt Europe, or put a man on the moon, or simply gets each of us out of bed in the morning...Hope!!!

I can actually see Sen Huckleberry Clinton carrying on her campaign with the Celine Dion theme song from the Titanic playing around her campaign as the Dem superdelegates head off to the life rafts....

I can see a table in the corner of the ill fated SS Huckleberry Clinton; a table is adorned with donuts and coffee which is set up for the quartet playing the solemn theme song music. The guest musicians are Mark Penn, Dollar Bill, Harold Ickes & Howard Wolfston ... such a heart breaking scene ...ROFLMAO

Who's running the ship at Clinton for President? The reason i'm asking" At what cost is she willing to all but lose the Black Vote for the Dem Party-and Herself? Seating Mich- Florida after Sen Obama GAVE HIS WORD NOT TO CAMPAIN IN THESE TWO STATES-[IS THIS A FIRST?THERE A GUY WHO MEAN WHAT HE SAY'S!!!AND SAY'S WHAT HE MEAN'S?] and we all know if he Sen Obama would have set up camp in Florida she wouldn't have won by the margin she won at-Now To some like myself it would look as if the rules are being changed because Mrs Clinton could lose her bid and favors would be called in,Or race could be us as a factor in the coming General-To me that cheating -knowing the voters in every state that hes has won would feel cheated also to know the system is RIGGED!!!! Al Gore-vs-George Bush picking the President-BIG BUSINESS WON NOW DIDN'T THEY?

I don't buy the "Hillary is a captive of her bad campaign" argument, not one bit. The buck stops at the top, and the top is Hillary. Hillary Clinton has run a poor campaign because she is a weak candidate, period.

All the failings that have destroyed her campaign for the presidency--poor judgement, worse management, disastrous strategy, lack of fucus, general cluelessness, and arrogance--are ALL traits that matter when it comes to the presidency. No one who scores that poorly on even half of these should be permitted to come close to the oval office.

Simon, you obtuse piece of flotsum. Who is making excuses for HRC?! Have you ever run a presidential campaign? I doubt it! Despite the abysmal mutterings of a very corrupt republican party, the woman has managed to not only get by, but to thrive in a very hostile environment... And by the way if anyone reading this is still a republican after the last seven years, I have to tell you as a friend, that you have pie on your face. But I digress. HRC is still in this race more than any of us knows. A thing I've noticed about good old fashioned dem's is you'll know what they're thinking after the election. I personally am an Independent, but my dem' dad told me,"Every time Americans got in trouble since WWI, it's been the dem's that got us out." Mark my word. Hillary Clinton WILL be the 44th no thanks to you or your ilk. If you ever get good enough to judge someone, God will have taken you to heaven, where that's His job.

It will NEVER happen. Clinton is finished, kaput, over. Moronic boot-lickers such as yourself will have to jack off to videos of Bill Clinton impeachment hearings, because that's as close as you'll ever get to seeing a Clinton in the WH again. The woman is pathetic. Before this election, I decided I could not support her because of her voting record as a Senator. Over time, I have learned to seriously HATE this woman, and her ends-justify-the-means campaign strategy. She's no different than the Republicans. John McCain will show more integrity as a nominee than Hillary ever could. She is pathetic, and, YES, I have grown to hate her, as have a lot of other voters over the course of her pathetic, narcissistically driven, win-at-all-costs campaign. A Hillary nomination is a sure recipe for disaster for the Dems in November!

Yes, she has run a terrible campaign and so did Gore in the general election. He should have wiped the floor clean with Dubya yet Gore couldn't decide who he was in all of the debates. He blew it and she will too if she is elected. I hope the Superdelegates all peel away and vote for Obama - and do it now so she can get the hell out of this race.

Why does everyone keep blaming everyone but Hillary? This is just "chickens coming home to roost" and if you ask me she got off lucky. She's very lucky Barack Obama is such a class act because there's tonnes of mud on her that could be smeared in a nice thick layer!

I just wish she had character and would surprise us just once and do the right thing.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:21 PM on 03/03/2008

That's exactly what I was thinking. This is the candidate of "experience"? She's lucky Obama's so classy. (And, no, she has no character so don't hold your breath on that one).

Her "experience" has translated into a mess of old-school pols jockeying for power around her... gross mismanagement of strategy and tone....dirty tactics showing no core principles....and that she apparently has no idea about money management (it still bugs me that she first said her campaign manager "lied to her" about where the money went---then Hillary called in BILL to go over the books and tell her what happened.)

And then, when things go wrong, she ALWAYS pins the blame on someone else (dishonest advisers....black voters.....the caucus system.....unions......the press.....on and on and on).

But I still say "Thanks, Hillary." "Thanks", because you've given us a PERFECT idea of what your presidency would look like. (And, to that, I say, "No, thanks.")
