Report: Bush Backed Covert Coup Attempt Against Hamas

After failing to anticipate Hamas's victory over Fatah in the 2006 Palestinian election, the White House cooked up yet another scandalously covert and self-defeating Middle East debacle: part Iran-contra, part Bay of Pigs. With confidential documents, corroborated by outraged former and current U.S. officials, David Rose reveals how President Bush, Condoleezza Rice, and Deputy National-Security Adviser Elliott Abrams backed an armed force under Fatah strongman Muhammad Dahlan, touching off a bloody civil war in Gaza and leaving Hamas stronger than ever.

The Al Deira Hotel, in Gaza City, is a haven of calm in a land beset by poverty, fear, and violence. In the middle of December 2007, I sit in the hotel's airy restaurant, its windows open to the Mediterranean, and listen to a slight, bearded man named Mazen Asad abu Dan describe the suffering he endured 11 months before at the hands of his fellow Palestinians. Abu Dan, 28, is a member of Hamas, the Iranian-backed Islamist organization that has been designated a terrorist group by the United States, but I have a good reason for taking him at his word: I've seen the video.

Bush sees himself as the puppetmaster, yet he wonders why there are strings tied to his arms and legs???

What a mess. The Repugs from of democracy, if they can win by rigged elections then a reelection should be decided by the supreme court or the court of the AKs.

As for Dr. Rice, who the repugs still tout as a potential presidential or vice president canidate. My God, who are they kidding? Has anyone verified that her PhD degree did not come form some small Caribbean island that anyone can pay for from the back of a travel magazine?

All yes on Condi Rice, the most Christian woman! --- Who is her pastor, by the way? Who gives spiritual guidance to this monster?

Democracy is clearly not enough. It must be a pro-US democracy or it doesn't really count. This may also be a part of why Bush is not keen to pull out of Iraq. What will he say if he has to deal with an American-installed democracy that is not pro-US. Could be embarrassing.

The Gang That Couldn't Shoot Straight.

When everything is finally declassified it will be very interesting to find out just how much the rise of Islamic fundamentalism is a direct result of covert actions taken by the USA and Israel.

Didn't Israel encourage the creation of Hamas as a counter to the PLO?

The victims of this, including the people of Palestine AND Israel deserve better than the plotting of these fools.

Back when the PLO was nearly wiped out in Lebenon by Israeli forces, the USA forced the IDF to allow Arafat &thugs to escape to Tunisia. This is the classic example of "unintended consquences," as if the PLO had been eradicated the world would have less of the Islamicfascism we're experiencing today. Maybe.
Actually, isn't "maybe" the active word describing any effort by a nation trying to get results for peace in the Mid East? Perhaps any gang that can't shoot straight, republican or democrat, should just back off and let that area sort out its own problems. Maybe.
(Regarding another subject.......I notice there's no mention on HuffPO about the USA hosing a coupla bad guys in Somalia with a missile the other day. Seems our "intelligence" located the terrorist wanted for bombings that killed Americans and others several years ago. Bravo for dogged perserverence, and water intimidation, maybe?)

talk about a lack of judgment. They haven't learned one single thing from all of the foul-ups of the past 50 years or more of lousy US policy and decision making. It's like history and experience do not exist for the Bush administration.

that wouldn't surprise me . . . israel and the us make sure of a Hamas victory to ensure that israel would never reach any agreement with the Palestinians . . . however Hamas was legally elected and should be part of any peace negotiations . .. . it will take the UN army to resolve this and get the israeli's out . . .

Wnenever the USA does something covertly, rest assured it's illegal!

Rest assured it will also end in failure!

Their activities display a complete lack of understanding of Islam and of Hamas!

Reading the Vanity Fair article, I noticed a theme that, while not being emphasized, is persistent. Something I have believed for years, certainly since the end of the debacle in Vietnam (I joined the Navy to stay out of that god forsaken place), and have voiced whenever given the opportunity, is that the CIA was and is as useless as tits on a boar. Everything that organization has participated in has been a dismal failure: the Bay of Pigs (with the involvement of Bush senior), setting up the Shah Pahlavi as a dictator in Iran, consistently lousy intelligence gathering, principally in the cases of Vietnam and Russian missile capabilities, meddling in Nicaragua and Guatemala, and on and on.

I've jokingly said that, if I were elected president, my first act would be to disband that sorry organization. It would save the US government from waisting huge sums of wasted money.

Send him to Guantanamo!
