The Chinese military continues to increase spending on efforts to break into U.S. military computer systems, expand its Navy, and invest in intercontinental nuclear missiles and weapons to destroy satellites, according to the latest U.S report on China's military power.

Chinese military officers after a meeting about the People's Liberation Army in 2007.

The annual report from the Pentagon to Congress says China's total military spending in 2007 was between $97 billion and $139 billion, but it is hard to tell exactly how much was spent and on what.

In comparison, the U.S. military budget request for 2008 is $481.4 billion, not including war requests.

Hard to fault the Chinese, who are traditionally isolationists, from wanting to cover their asses. After all, it's not been the Chinese who've promoted imperialism, but the Americans. My country - America, is the one pushing for global control.

I say, it's about time someone put a stop to our foreign policy, a policy that has been in place for the past fifty years. So, even though I fought against Chinese influence in Vietnam, I say, "Go for it." Please, go for it. Stop us now before we destroy not only you but the rest of the world.

Only $418 billion? Boy. We really have to "strengthen" our military.

I can't believe the Republican Congress let military spending get so dangerously low.

Come on. There is no need for China to try to hack U.S. computers.

Since the U.S. is now a wholly owned subsidiary of a handful of international mega-corporations, the Chinese government can much more easily just buy whatever they want directly with all the U.S. dollars we have sent them in exchange for all the worthless, tainted, sometimes toxic, crap they have sold us through Walmart, etc.

And they could get it for a bargain price.

In selling out the American People, the corporations that now control our goverment won't be undersold.

The Chinese may want to buy quickly though. The value of the dollar is dropping like a rock.

With respect to the growing controversy over NAFTA in this political campaign season, it is completely understandable why all Americans should be up-in-arms over such a self-destructive trade deal. It points to a larger problem where a pattern of self-destruction seems to have emerged from that nexus of political activity where politicians and lobbyists negotiate and pass special trade deals -- Washington DC.

In this context, it is important to note another story appearing on this morning's Huffington Post that is emblematic of the serious problem facing average Americans today. It is a story that, once again, originates within political circles in Washington DC but quickly translates down into our homes, workplaces, and communities. The story that I refer to is "Report: China Trying to Hack US Computers, Buy Nukes". This story is "joined at the hip" with the NAFTA controversy.

Yes, China is trying to hack into our computers, buy nukes and other strategic assets, control our infrastructure and gain access to our top secret technology, and all while, of course, building up their military and -- here comes the sad part -- financed with U.S. dollars that have been the direct result of our insane, suicidal trade policies. I guess the military industrial complex is getting exactly what it wants: "Cold War, Part Deux" and several more decades of padding their wallets at U.S. taxpayers' expense. We are all going to hell in a handbasket faster than you can say, "Special Interests"!

Isn't it time that we grabbed this bull(shit) by the horns and interjected some logic and reason that prioritizes and values "self-preservation" above personal greed? It's high time that all Americans DEMAND that our politicians, for once, begin representing the real interests and welfare of all Americans, rather than the interests of a few greedy bastards who think that life is nothing more than a means to hoard wealth at everyone else's expense.

It is important that we hold our political leaders to their word on these ridiculous trade agreements. No longer should we tolerate the old "wink and a nod" between our politicians and special interests. The simple truth is our way of life -- our very lives -- depend upon it.

It has reached a crescendo, a point where we should all go to our windows and shout out at our neighbors, our politicians, and the world, "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore!"

All financed by your purchases at WalMart and other corporations subsidized by the Chinese Gov't. If you really look at it, it would seem that American corporations, who downsized and moved jobs to China to save money on labor and environmental costs just to become even more profitable than they were, have done a treasonous act by financing Chinas military's growth. This a country who we will be fighting a resource war with in the very near future.

And shame on the American people for buying this crap and continuing the cycle.

Follow the money and you will find a manchurian candidate type corporate philosophy where money trumps patriotism.
The truly sad thing is that we invented free markets and many a corporation, or country, rode Americas back to get obscenely wealthy and now are happily throwing us under te bus.

I agree totally with your post. Most inciteful is yourstatement on the looming resource war. Russia and China are gobbling the rights to the worlds resources and we're planting corn. Most ominous is China's new ballistic submarine program, which of coarse made possible by the sale of U.S. technology. Maybe whan the Chinese pollution cloud settles over Los Angelos in a couple years, we'll wake up. As we tout the World Economy mantra,we forget thes comminist regimes are still very much nationalists.

Some circles always need an Enemy ... something to fear. With the Soviet Union gone and Iran too small to cause enough people to wet themselves in fear, the Authoritarian set turns its eyes to China.

The US spends more on militart than the next five countries combined. Add to that 2 years of a yahoo cowboy preznit who thinks he can saunter across the globe 'spreadin' Democracy' for the US and its corporations and step back to see a LOT of countries start askig themselves if they shouldn't be "weaponing up."

"We" (e.g., the Bush Administration and the lunatic fringe we call the Radical Right) caus eour own problems, in this country.

BIll Clinton passed US Missile Technology to China. But liberals either are dangerously unaware or don't realize it's significance - all at their own peril.

The greatest threat to America security is the bulk of the officer corps of our military. Look at how they screwed up Iraq. These backwards thinking knuckle draggers are still fighting the Cold War. To improve our military we need, first, to enact Roman decimation, that means kill one out of every ten officers beginning in the Pentagon where there is more worthless grabastic amphibian crap per meter than any place in the U.S..

Over the past few years the greatest threat to our freedom and democracy has been the Bush Administration not some foreign sovereign government. Personally, I am more afraid of our government than the governments of China or India.

Tax incentives for corporations to not repatriate profits and continue to invest in foreign operations are hurting the US economy - it is wrong to blame our policies on the manufacturing beneficiaries such as China.

Having been to China about 50 times, I am more comfortable with their intentions than ours. Walk down the street in China and a homeless guy will try to sell you a pack of cigarettes from a carton, walk down the street in San Francisco and a homeless person will beg you for a quarter. You tell me, which fosters socialism or communism and which fosters capitalism?

With over a trillion dollars of US Treasuries, the Chinese do not need to threaten with a nuke, all they have to do is threaten to dump the bonds and interest rates will rise to 20% overnight crippling our economy.
