She might not win the presidency, but Hillary Clinton has succeeded at one thing: getting us all to think about whether the press prefers Barack Obama over her.

Last night, three of the most prominent political commentators -- Time columnist Joe Klein, Newsweek scribe Jonathan Alter and National Review editor Rich Lowry -- tackled that issue in a discussion at Manhattan's 92nd Street Y moderated by Jeff Greenfield.

Klein, who's also a CNN regular, was most unequivocal in spotting bias.

"I do believe there's something weird a few of our colleagues have [against Clinton]," he said. "They tend to be Roman Catholics, actually. People like Tim Russert, Chris Matthews, Maureen Dowd. They've had it in for Bill and Hillary Clinton since Monica Lewinsky. They feel that the Clintons are trying to put one over on us all the time."

The Catholic Church supported Bush over Kerry, save the babies but kill the adults in a stupid war.
The Catholic church will support the Republican nominee. The Catholic Church wants to be in bed with the Republicans. By the way, the Catholic Church is withering, failure to change over the milennia has it's price. Better to go to the mega church down the street.
Is there any chuch that does not support the Republican dogma?
First Adventists of San Francisco?
All churches need to be taxed on their earnings and property, church and state separation must be an imperative, otherwise it will take at least 500 years for America to throw off the yoke of these false prophets.
You don't need a god, people!

One would think an intelligent person would refrain from speaking in absolutes.
Based upon a poll of three, he generalizes the opinion of millions who have nothing else in common with his three.
There are Catholics on all sides of the political racial and sociological spectrum, including the clergy themselves. Am old woman in texas or unhappy teenager in the mid-west does not represent anything except themwselves. There is even an opioionated TV station in the US that pretends to speak for the Pope, but they do not.
I think Pinochet was but certainly many of his army officers were as were the many thousands they murdered. So, they did that for personal political and monetary gain.
To use the words...The Jews...The prodestants..The Catholics...The Muslims at the start of a sentance making some broad generalization, is about the dumbest thing one can do.
Klein is a fool hoping to appeal to fools...he makes his money as a fellow among fools.

Klein is a swine this is from the boob who wrote "Primary Colors" made huge money for the movie and wouldn't put his name on it. He is an anti Clinton industry. He should have been canned from Newsweek the minute he did it. Alter, Dowd, Russert and Matthews are really a disgrace when it comes to the things they have said about Hillary Clinton and I voted for Obama.

lolllll...what is funny is I quit watching Tim Russert early on because the ONLY thing he talked about was how Hillary was destined to win the brass ring.

Right up until Obama started winning, that is. Then suddenly he was all Obama!

Me, I think most of the MSM is just addicted to being "right", so they rely on "conventional wisdom" too much.

Except for Fox, of course: Fox slants their disinformation to achieve specific goals. Murdoch must have a bunch of old MI guys stashed somewhere.

it seems that the right has decided to beat up and do some powerful lying about the catholic church. first, unlike protestants, catholics have minds of our own- we don't count on preachers and radio and fox pundits to tell us what to believe. we also don't judge other people like, it's called free will. the holy father has not told us how to vote, that is the same crap republicans put out about kennedy. think about it, who has more interest in political system, rome or jerusalem?

This headline had really nothing to do with the article. And Klein never said Catholics "hate" Clinton. Like any group, they cannot be boxed in. Many, who happen to consider themselves Catholic, like her and are going to vote for her. (Hate is such a ....well, hateful word.)

Imagine Klein said,...".they are pouncing in her and.... whisper whisper....they happen to be Methodist, or Jewish, or whatever. What does this tell us about Klein? If there is a story here, that is the story.

What does this tell us about the Huffpost editors?

When Hillary is losing primary after primary, is in financial trouble and not paying her campaign bills, and there is dissension among the campaign workers, what should the media be reporting? That everything is going really well for Hillary? Obama has none of those problems, so what is the media to say about him? That he is a loser and his campaign is in trouble?

This is all such a crock of bullshit. The news is not that the media is reporting it.

Remember that part in Christianity about "love your neighbor as yourself?" Oh that's right, it was only Jesus who said that. Why would Joe or the Catholics care about THAT?

Catholics generally have a disdain for anybody NOT Catholic. My forefathers left Europe to get away from Catholics. They should have never been allowed to come over. They still have a lot of explaining to do. They bear responsibility for the deaths of over a hundred million lives since the Pagan emperor Constantine stepped on the Church of Jesus to regain control of a failing empire.

I'm afraid he's right. I heard some rather disturbing information from my devoutly Catholic mother-in-law. In a rare moment of candor she confessed to me that "the holy fathers" have been urging their Texas flocks to vote for Hillary in the Democratic primary because they believe her to be a more defeatable candidate than Obama, THEN to vote for McCain in the general election. I think this is the Republican strategy, and I'm afraid, judging from the past that it will succeed. Hope not! Oh well, just passing it along.

In their rush to find answers reporters and pundits make sweeping statements that belie their prejudices.
I am a liberal practicing Catholic as is my husband. I voted for Obama in the Primary and he voted for Hillary. I keep seeing polls that are just the reverse of how we vote and now we are supposed to hate Hillary??? What are they drinking???
I am an individual with a life experience that is different from others--it colors how I make decisions and what I am impressed by...quit trying to pigeon hole me.

Well, it's hardly news that there's rampant misogyny in the Catholic Church. As one raised Catholic, I can attest to that. Such a strict, paternalistic hierarchy is hard to justify without the explicit message that there's some work women are, by their nature and God's plan, simply not fit to perform - particularly leadership over men.

I'd be surprised, though, if characters like Russert, Matthews and Dowd are suddenly working to live out their religious creed. More likely they're opportunistic whores who've sold their soul to Corporate Media, who is only too delighted to destroy the reputation and legacy of our last two-term Democratic presidency. How ironic that Democrats are so easily recruited to this effort thanks to media's helpful framing that anything good for Hillary is bad for Barack.

Not to say Catholics don"t wield tremendous power in our country. They may well have taken over the Supreme Court. All five of the right-wing majority voting block are Catholics. No disrespect meant to the millions of liberal Catholics who quietly ignore the worst of their church"s teachings.
