Uhaul is going to start charging customers a $1-$5 fee to defray the cost of throwing away the various nasty junks associated with its rental business, according to an anonymous store manager. It will be called an "Environmental Fee." Ok, whatever, but we like the rebuttal supplied in the Q & A for Uhaul managers in case a customer complaints: "Do you want clean air and water thirty or fifty years from now? If so, pitch in." Nice, avoid raising upfront prices and get customers to cover your operating expenses through the power of guilt. Full text of the announcement, inside...

ENVIRONMENTAL FEE Effective the week of March 4, 2008, Web BEST will begin charging an "Environmental Fee". This will be charged on all truck rentals. It is $1 per day on an In-Town with max of $5 and it is $5 per rental on a One-Way. This money will be set aside and spent on waste disposal and related activities.

Most auto part, tire stores and auto repair facilities have charged a similar fee for several years. Both Penske and Budget charge similar fees. The customer expects U-Haul as the industry leader to deal responsibly with these matters and we are.

I guess our only choice is to just say no; Tell them it's ridiculous and you're not paying. If they refuse to give you a waiver, walk out the door and use some Ma and Pa shop - better for the economy anyway.

My phone company has started charging me a "paper invoice charge" of .99 cents PLUS tax on the charge. Corporations are now using the enviornmental movement to rip us off even more. Like the United and USAir charging for an extra bag. Pretty soon the govt will be charging us a "fart" charge for soiling the air. Whatz next?

So, will this fee be adopted by airlines, Amtrak, rental cars and Greyhound? How often do they change their batteries and tires, anyway? Isn't that factored into their rates as a part of scheduled maintenance? Wjat's next, a surcharge for our asses wearing out the upholstery? If so, there's no way I'm going to pay the same rate as fat-assed Hastert.

Why not? Auto repair shops charge a "recycling fee" and tire shops charge a "disposal fee."

I think that is a little different because they actualy dispose of the waste. How much junk is actually tossed when someone is using a moving van to move? I have never been able to just return a U-Haul truck with crap in the back. It is just a way to charge more.

I don''t think the fee they're talking about is for crap left in the vans - I think we're supposed to believe it's to reimburse them for when they get charged recycling fees and disposal fees for parts and tires. It's like an implicit threat to toss the stuff in the nearest wetlands if we don't pay.

Actually that charge is figured into the rental fee already, else their profits would be lower. So buy calling it an environmental fee, they can bill us twice for the same thing.
