UPDATED 3/05

Prominent Backer Says Obama Has 50 New Superdelegates, reports the Political Wire:

Rep. Lacy Clay (D-MO), Sen. Barack Obama's Missouri co-chairman and pledged Obama superdelegate, said Obama will gain the support of 50 undecided Democratic superdelegates later this week, according to the Columbia Missourian.

Said Clay: "She (Sen. Clinton) will not make up those numbers. This race is over."

EARLIER

Tom Brokaw appeared on Morning Joe this morning to discuss the state of the Democratic primary. While discussing Hillary's long odds he mentioned that a source "very close to the Obama campaign" claimed the campaign had around 50 additional superdelegates "ready to go public before too long."

Here's Brokaw's whole appearance; the comments are around 3 minutes in:

Well it seems as if now there are two of us. I really suspect many more are under the rug and just do not want to talk about it. For weeks now I have been clocking the difference in delegate matching with the total of delegates gained. The difference percentage wise (for all of you non-math students) is and has been in the range of 3%. . If one had all of the delegates that candidate would have a 100% lead. Three percent is mind you 3/100,30/1000,300/10,000 etc. It certainly is not a mandate in any sense of the word and is much closer to almost no lead. It is not enough to claim any kind of a lead. In fact a leader ought to do a great deal better.
That said stop whining and let this primary go to completion. Super delegates who jump the ship early are not to be congradulated. Their activity shows a lack of respect for the rules of the party and the reason superdelegates were devised for in the first place. They really have a very important place in the primary and they certainly should remain neutral until convention time. This is not some kind of sport ritual, too much TV. It is the process by which we select, not elect, the candidate which we feel will handle a most difficult position in this country. The candidate we feel will WIN in the general election.
A three percent difference tells us that as a party we really are not able to select a winning candidate and therefore it will be up to the superdelegates to find that candidate.
I also feel that neither of the current candidates has, nor will they by convention time, proven themself to be a winner with a mandate. It will then be necessary for the superdelegates to make that final decision and not by whim or fancy. A draft may then be necessary to select that probable winning candidate.
This is not the time to play," if you don't play the game my way I am going to pick up all of my toys and go home.".

What's the matter with people? If everyone is so afraid that Hillary will win, then I can understand all the negative comments. But, if they are so sure Barack will win, why don't they let the process go through to completion.

Nothing except the voting should be considered until the convention. No super-delegates saying who they will support, etc. , etc..

The party won't die with a little honest competition. We need to show the world how a democratic society works. We believe in the process, let's prove it. The best candidate's have come forward to this point.

I'm proud to be an American and I believe our system works. We don't need the negative that feeds into the media including the blogs.

I remember 1968 when the fight for the Democratic nomination went all the way to the convention. The floor fight that ensued split the party and handed victory to Richard Nixon. Now there's an election that changed the course of history! Competition is healthy, to a point.

All is fair in love and politics. And so it goes. We have two candidates on the Democratic side.
One stands out more than the other. Experienced, concerned and able to roll with the punches.
A proven candidate, whose turn has arrived. The other requires more seasoning. More time
to learn from elder statesmen in the senate. That has been the way, and should continue.
We cannot afford just a great speaker, but someone who can provide both change and
experience to face what lies before us. An individual determined to stand up for our future and our well being. Not just speak at rallies about it., but ready to act as we are threatend by our
enemies. Policy speaches must be backed by explaining how those policies would be put into
place. Senator Clinton has explained her position and policy on the matters of importance to us
all. Do not be afraid of putting a woman in charge. She can and must succeed where the
men of the past have failed. Perhaps were it not for women during WW2, we might not be here
having this discussion The lack of experience gave us 8 years of George Bush. We must not suffer this way again.

Hey, get real. stop being a dreamer. this is politics. We face danger from our enemies.
This is not the same world we once knew.. Joe Biden would be a great candidate and
President. Sure has credentials. Look back in History and you will see that each
individual does have their time. Senator Clinton does have the credential to lead this country. Part of the senate process is to have those elected in the new class is
to have them learn from their elders and earn the respect that makes it possible to attain
the next level of office. The extreme right like limbaugh, O'Reilly, and Mistress Coulter
would love to have Obama as the oppositioin. He would be the easy touch. It's time
to understand and learn the lessons of history, and stop being the dreamer.

Nobody's afraid of putting a woman in charge. What we don't want is a woman or a man who thinks they're entitled to the position. Nobody's "time has arrived." If such a concept existed, we'd all be working on how to get Joe Biden or Chris Dodd elected. As for relevant experience, Hillary has no more of it than Barack does. Probably the biggest task either of them has handled is running a presidential campaign, and by all accounts, Barack has done it more deftly, efficiently and without the infighting and backbiting we sadly take for granted in a Clinton operation (says this long time Clinton supporter).

If the experience of this campaign tells us anything it's that Obama's the one who rolls with the punches. He's unflappable, his demeanor staying even and dignified in the face of the most dishonest, ugly attacks. He has exactly the poise and grace under fire you'd want in a leader during a crisis. And he has consistently kept his priorities straight, refusing to say or do things that might help him beat Hillary, but that would certainly help McCain if Hillary is the candidate. Sadly, the same can't be said of Hillary.

Because the process is NOT FAIR. Obama should have won already. The primaries are been rigged on all the voting machines. Why do you think Hillary HATES CAUCUSES and refuse to allow a revote in Florida and Michigan by caucus? Use your head and think. What is wrong with people getting together and counting one another to make an accurate vote? Nothing other than it prevents HILLARY and the Carl Rove fanatics from preseting the voting machines for the witch.

Wake up my friend. Things are not as they seem. Read more and get away from that TV of lies!

CAUCUSES ARE RIGGED FROM THE MOMENT A VOTER GOES THERE.

THE OBAMA PEOPLE ARE ALL OVER THEM.

THE PRESSURE TO CONFORM IS ON.

LOST HILLARY BALLOTS ( UNDER TABLES, ON FLOORS, IN BATH ROOMS, IN GARBAGE, ETC.. YOU NAME IT, IN ONE CAUCUSES OR ANOTHER HILLARY AND HER VOTERS GET THE SHORT END OF THE STICK. )

PREFILLED OBAMA BALLOTS BEFORE THE VOTERS EVEN SHOW UP

HILLARY VOTERS CALLED EVERY NAME IN THE BOOK INCLUDING RACISTS FOR NOT VOTING FOR OBAMA. IT IS VERY,VERY UGLY.

I WILL TAKE VOTING BY MACHINE ANY DAY OVER FRAUD CAUCUSES.

WHY DO YOU THINK OBAMA LOVES THEM SO MUCH??

Rove is working behind the scenes for Obama.

It is a simple fact that this country has run on fear for at least seven years now. There is a genuine fear of the harm H. R. Clinton, would and could inflict on the interests of this nation concerning fair trade, foreign policy (ie Iraq), WAL-MART, and overall unity and well being of this once shining nation. This fear is not based on media hype, sexism, or any other superficial motivator; but rather, because of the surprise that we all got from "innocent looking" George Bush, who's gift to this nation has been a more cautious mind, for the sake of rejecting the next ne'er-do-well candidate. Your argument can be considered akin to saying, "Lets not look towards peace talks and diplomacy in the Middle East, lets keep fighting and see who wins." In your last line you stated that you "believe our system works." I sincerely, hope I am not the first person to tell you that after W and Cheney's second term, I am not so sure. There is highly suspicious evidence suggesting that particular election was a heist.
Hillary Clinton IS that shadowy figure that we cannot afford to have in the Presidential seat, the Commander-in-Chief seat or any other seat she would be taking. I fear for the entire nations sake, that the more than 50% of all individuals in this nation who are not informed enough, or intelligent enough to make an educated, rational decision preceding their vote are voting. It is simply an undesirable consequence that this more than 50% are either voting for Hillary or not voting at all. This fact, however is not merely accident, but a political strategy that has worked by mobilizing masses of rural voters and undereducated feminists. The best candidate HAS stepped forward and is leading in delegates, the only recourse that the Hillary camp has, is that the spitting cobra that is your first choice, for why I don't know, has temporarily blinded Senator Obama, and has encouraged the notion that the high-road is not working. The reason we have superdelegates is such that the high-road CAN work, despite the misguided masses with at best a high-school diploma, let alone a misappropriated degree from a respected institution. Obama must maintain his forward-thinking message and bring the message of unity and inspiration for ALL citizens back into his campaign. We want Barack Hussein Obama, not Senator Obama's response to Senator Clinton's nasty remarks. This is not ping-pong and Barack Obama has no obligation to constantly defend baseless attacks, we need forward progress. The job of diminishing Hillary Clinton's credibility is easily done through his educated and informed supporters, news media coverage which exposes her shadowy past, and jokes which stab at the fact that well, Hillary Clinton is simply too spiteful and selfish to run this nation towards real change.

Tx - great idea! You know Hillary folks will flood the DNC headquarters. I have made and continue to make numerous phone calls in support of Senator Obama. My phone bill is something else! I do not run into as many staunch supporters of Hillary as I used to. When Hillary starting running a negative campaign - it has turned many Democratic voters off and has swung many Independents and moderate Republican voters into Senator Obama's camp. The fact that Haskert's house seat fell to a Democrat in a Republican stronghold is a sign in the right direction. Voters are just plain tired of same old, same old.

Hillary supporters are calling Howard Dean as I type. And we are telling him that without Hillary supporters Obama loses in a landslide to Mc Cain. And Obamas lies about the Clinton's and his inexperience are just two of many reasons we will never vote for Obama.

And in November if Obama slides into being nominee us Clinton supporters will either:

VOTE NADER

VOTE MC CAIN

STAY HOME

AND/ OR AS MY FAMILY, FRIENDS AND I HAVE ALL TOLD DEAN ALREADY, WE WILL ALL LEAVE THE DEM PARTY.

Dean can pick "come lately" voters. The ones that are here today and gone tomorrow or he can back Hillary and her supporters. We are the back bone of the party. All races and genders
( including the 10 to 20% African Americans) that work our backsides off for the DEM party ever single year. Not just election years. Every year we donate in the millions, volunteer our time to local DNC offices, hold fund raisers, make calls, volunteer our time at local events and on and on and on. And GOTV in election years and everything in between.

Without the millions of us, the DEM party would face serious problems. We love the DEM party and by allowing someone who many think is a cult GOD to come in and try to take over the party is stomach turning. And we are not going to stand by silently while our great DEM party is taken apart brick by brick.

And either seat the delegates from Fl and MI or let them have new primarys. Take a stand for the American voter Doc Dean. Take a stand for Senator Clinton and her millions upon millions of supporters. We are waiting.

JOIN WITH US MY FELLOW HILLARY SUPPORTERS. CALL AND/OR WRITE DOC. DEAN AND LET HIM KNOW HOW YOU SUPPORT HILLARY CLINTON. AND HOW HILLARY SHOULD BE OUR NEXT PRESIDENT.

I'm ready to dump both of these DLC-to-the-bone candidates and ask the Superdelegates not to vote for either. Neither one will accumulate enough pledged delegates alone to win a victory on the first ballot.

I'm writing my Superdelegates and asking them to vote for Al Gore on the first ballot. If no one gets a majority on the first ballot, all the delegates are then free, and he can be drafted.

It's the longest of shots, but if we can trade in these two DLCers for Gore, I'm willing to at least try.

I am done with Huffpo I really am tired on how she post such biased articles and headlines. I was a big fan of hers and own 2 of her books. What happened why are you losing a fan? Your site is so skewed to obama with your guided hand to blame. America"s vote is pretty much split around 10 million each, right? With obama up by 400-600 thousand. But this post acts like America has voted 20 million for obama and like 2 people for Hill, this post does not represent America nor does it represent fair news. So continue to loose the voice of American"s diversity and Embrace your one sided "yes men" bloggers. I will not vote for Obama! And granted I was in favor of Hill from the start but huffpo really turned me off to Obama

Huffpo is just another blog. It's become a grand kool-aid station for the Obama cult. I can understand if people don't like someone's policies, but the personal attacks and dirty lies of these Obama followers and huffpo higher ups are insane.

The truth is Hillary keeps winning states a democrat must win and can win in November, like OH, FL, NH, NM, etc. So far Obama has won a bunch of cacuses in red-states like UT, KS, AL, LA, VA, GA, and SC with the help of 90% of black votes. If you think he is going to bag these in November, you, my friend, are swimming in the kool-aid.

Here is an idea for the Superdelegates. Those that committed to Hillary should cast their vote for Hillary, and those that said they'd support Obama would follow their candidate and simply vote "present" and see how that works out!

It's the suggestion of inevitability that is misleading, especially as regards the likelihood of Obama's ability to replicate caucus victories in a secret general election ballot. One supporter pointed out that Obama can lose OH and FL in the general yet still win by taking 3 out of CO, IA, MO, NM, and VA. Are all Democrats confident that Obama does better than Hillary in those states against McCain? That is the question the super delegates will have to answer.
