British crooner James Blunt kept his ladies'-man persona intact Friday night at the Beacon Theatre - until he launched into his poignant ballad "No Bravery," and the collective swooning turned to gasps.

As Blunt revealed that he wrote the tune while serving as an armed NATO peacekeeper in Kosovo, the captivated audience watched a massive video screen display images of bombed homes, dead bodies and graves interspersed with smiling children flashing peace signs.

"The film was my footage, taken from our vehicles while we patrolled," the singer later told us at an after-party. "I recently had a chance to go back and play for the Serbs, and they were all in on my message. It's great because music is the strongest form of communication, and it was nice to connect with them."

Does his video show pictures of the tens of thousands slaughtered by the Serbs in their frenzy of ethnic cleansing? Are the smiling children the same ones whom NATO saved by bombing the Serbs and thus stopping genocide? Sometimes the only way to stop genocide is to take military action and put bombs on target. Non-violent protests won't always stop ethnic cleansing. Thousands of civilian lives were saved by NATO during that war. Far more were saved then were killed. Get a life, Blunt. Your music sucks anyway.

That video has always been a standard part of his concert tour. I don't know why anyone familiar with his work or having heard the song before would be shocked. Kudos to Blunt for keeping it real, even if it disturbs the swooner crowd. I always thought it was just a good, powerful song.
