McAuliffe Tells Penn: Stop Talking To The Press

For the second time in as many days, a Clinton surrogate bristled at the public infighting involving the campaign's chief strategist Mark Penn.

As Tuesday's primary elections we getting started, Terry McAuliffe, one of Clinton's highest ranking advisors, was asked to respond to recent comments Penn made in which he significantly downplayed his role in the campaign.

"Why are you paying so much money to a guy that's doing nothing but licking stamps?" MSNBC's Joe Scarborough asked jokingly.

"People ought to quit talking to the press," McAuliffe said, before adding, "When we get through with Texas and Ohio, I'll go talk to Maggie Williams, our campaign manager, about that."

On Monday night, on Tucker, Rep. Stephanie Tubbs-Jones, a Clinton supporter, offered a similar non-endorsement for the campaign's chief strategist.

"I'm not worried about Mark Penn, she said. "We'll deal with him later."

In Monday's Los Angeles Times, Penn sought to distance himself from the Clinton campaign's shortcomings, saying that he had "no direct authority" in the how the Senator ran her race.

"[I'm] an outside message advisor with no campaign staff reporting to me," he told the paper. "I have had no say or involvement in four key areas -- the financial budget and resource allocation, political or organizational sides. Those were the responsibility of Patti Solis Doyle, Harold Ickes and Mike Henry, and they met separately on all matters relating to those areas."

As Scarborough noted in his interview with McAuliffe, Penn had already billed Clinton more than $10 million for consulting, direct mail and other services, a hefty amount for someone who claimed such a minor role in campaign affairs.

This is the problem with Obama. He wants to reach across the aisle and make nice. But it's his supporters on these blogs that say the most vile and negative things about HRC. Makes you wonder about them. They won't vote for HRC if she gets the nomination and that's okay.

Since when did Obama get the nomination entitlement? I thought he had to fight it out in a campaign like anyone else. I guess he gets preferential treatment because he is half black. He does from the press and his supporters and his own smugness shows he feels he deserves it. But the say HRC is the one with the entitlement.....sounds like the pot calling the kettle half-black.

Obama just won his 12th state in a row. The delegates in Vermont give him the edge even if Hillary wins both Texas and Ohio. Mathematically impossible for HRC to get the nomination in a clean way.

She did not quote Obama truthfully in her campaign ad referencing Afghanistan. People need to do some fact-checking when HRC's campaign talk about her opponents positions and platforms.

Old white guy political hacks are running Hillary's campaign and quite badly to boot. Is this what we want? Obama brought young idealistic people into the party and if they get Hillary they will not show up and the Bushies get a third and perhaps 4th term. I would hope that Hillary would put the nation's welfare before her increasingly voracious appetite for power. It will be ironic if the Clintons go down in history as those who stood in the way of a much needed course correction for this country. And who did it it by resorting to messages with a subtext of racism (e.g. "who would you hire?" to which bigots in southern Ohio will say, "not the black guy.")

And who are BO's advisors? Bill Clinton's advisors from his 1992 and 1996 campaign and from his administration. If those times were so bad, terrible, unethical, murderous, immoral, etc., then what is the Mighty Obama doing with them in his inner circle. Could it be....., oh now, Obama-God, say it isn't so. You can't be a hypocrite, can you?

Obama is not running to be the first woman president. Hypocrisy is the keystone of Hillary's campaign since she has been totally dependent on her husband for her political career. Do use your brain.

Here's the thing. If Hillary does wind up stealing this nomination, she will have done so by using every dirty trick available. I actually think Mark Penn must be funneling some of his $10 million to Karl Rove.

Obama has shown amazing restraint (some might argue too much restraint) in not attacking Hillary. How does she take the position that she is going to fix NAFTA when her husband is the guy that signed it and on several occasions she has publicly said that, "on balance, it is good for America?"

The 3 AM ad really had the feel of a Karl Rove "fear" ad. Sure would be nice if someone answered the phone before the 6th ring.

I wish he would have hammered her on their tax returns. I'd love to know what they're hiding and apparently these returns are locked in some vault that they can't find the key to. I wish Russert would have asked her if there was anything in the returns that the American people might be uncomfortable with. Like, say several $ million in payments to Bill from the Emir of the UAE?

You can be sure that the Rupublicans will not let them get away with not releasing that information in a general election. So the Clinton's still have some secrets that we don't about yet.

And how about the White House schedules during her time there? I mean, flat out, she doesn't want anyone to see them. My guess is that it will look pretty much like Laura Bush's itinerary.

The point is, she has clearly done far more negative campaigning than Barack and as an Obama supporter it turns my stomach. I can not imagine myself voting for her in a general election and I do not believe I am alone.

Me either. And I used to support her! She has shown just how low she can go. My feeling is that it will backfire. People are sick of dirty tricks. Who needs the Swift Boats when you have Hillary?

My feeling is that the Democratic machine will put a stop to it, behind the scenes. The super delegates will come out to endorse Obama and she will be asked to leave, so that the place can be disinfected before the General.

I actually never believed her capable of being so dirty!

You are not alone and I and I have heard many other Obama supporters in my area say they will sit home if she steals away this nomination. Not just young but all the Barack supporters of all ages, and races. We are tired of the old politics and the winds of change are starting to blow across country.
Are you listening Dem Party Leaders? Are you listening Super Delagates?

Yes, what about those tax returns????????

I agree. And having more dirty tricksters in the White House, for another four to eight years, means a very terrible total of 16 years of having people with questionable ethics in places of power.

Stealing the nomination by getting the number of votes she's entitled to from MI and FL? It wasn't the people who changed the date in FL, it was the Republican Gov and Legislature who said that if the Dems wanted paper ballots (remember 2004) they would have to give on the date -- knowing it would screw the DNC, and, as usual, the DNC did the Repugs bidding by not allowing the date to change in order to protect Iowa -- WTF with Iowa? Their caucuses are outdated and un-democratic and should be changed to a regular primary and why do they have so much power. Give it to NY, CA, TX, OH but not a little nothing state that is a red state anyway.

As for jerks who won't vote for HRC, that'll teach her -- having McCain as president to stack the Supreme Court with more Alioto and Roberts people. This is why BO is bad for the Dems because he has gathered a bunch of sore loser, losers who if they can't get their way will kick and scream and take their ball away. Boo, fu...kin, Hoo!

I just put on my business suit after getting home from my side job at a local hardware store, and I'll be making my appearance at the polling place in a few minutes. I'll be voting for Obama and I feel very good about his candidacy. My 87 year old mother, who before today had never voted for a Democrat, also voted for Obama early this morning after she had fed her horses. My mother's second cousin William, who had been a bothersome neocon Bushbot until recently, is also strongly considering voting for Obama, although the last I heard he was a bit concerned about Farrakan's endorsement. William has become very disillusioned with Bush and I'm glad to say is a bit contrite these days. I think Barak handled that Farrakan issue the best way he could, saying "no thanks", and I hope that reassured William. We really do have a unifier in Barak Obama, and someone who inspires people. I met one person here in NE Ohio, as we were talking a bit of politics at the paint desk, who told me that he had never, ever voted before, but was definitely voting for Obama today.

I sure hope you are right, I would like this to end and Obama supporters would feel such gratitude to Ohio if they chose Obama decisively. The media may be enjoying how dragging this out has increased their ratings, but the cost has been very high.

Yes. the media is partly to blame and I do not always scapegoat the media. They frame every question as Barack vs. Hillary when speaking to to either candidate and ask nothing but 'gotcha' type questions. I have not heard Russert or other media once ask Obama or Clinton how they will restore and protect our vanishing civil liberties. How will they restore checks and balances and make sure this concept of a unitary executive is suppressed. It is a very important topic.

In fact, since Obama cannot answer questions truthfully he chould just drop out of the race. It just shows how much he will lie to the American people if he were the nominee, because he lied about the NAFTA meeting. He just can't run his campaign honestly.

The ridiculousness of the Obama supporters is getting really old. Try not bashing HRC for about 30 seconds. Obama lied. Be mad at him for betraying your trust and belief. He did it to himself.

He didn't lie- if you bothered to listen to his explanation, as well as the clarification of the Canadian officials (who, if you care to know, are from the conservative wing and would like nothing more than to help elect McCain) you would know that they reached out to an Obama advisor, misconstrued said advisors comments and manipulated the story into something it wasn't. Obama didn't call the Canadian government and personally speak to anyone, so before you accuse a man of lying, you had better get your facts right- but then again, when has a little thing like facts got in the way of the Clinton machine.

I believe Obama handled the Canadian Embassy meeting incident incorrectly. I'm sure his people reassured them that the problem wasn't with Canada, it was with Mexico. What's wrong with saying that?

I also believe I read that HRC's people met with the same embassy, as well. I'm sure they reassured the Canadians, in some way, shape, or form, that the problem was with Mexico.

This is a NON issue that has been blown way out of proportion. Not to mention the fact that many of those Ohio jobs actually went to China!

Granted, some of the Obama supporters might be a bit too enthusiastic at times. But don't forget, we were those Reagan Republicans that loathed the Clintons for their ethical lapses and their convenient memory loss. It doesn't surprise us that she is playing dirty, it just pisses us off that she'll say or do anything to get elected!

If she breaks even tonight and doesn't drop out of the race, you know she's plotting to get her hands on those MI and FL delegates, as well as broker deals with the super's.

I don't think that I can take another 49 days of this crap before we get to the PA primary! Hopefully, her donors will just say no and she won't be able to afford to stay in the race that long.

Aye Carumba! (and no, I'm not an illegal)

Plowboy - Obama lied about the NAFTA meeting. His economic strategist met with them and Obama didn't know about it? Don't be blinded by your loyaly. Obama had a chance to tell the truth about the meting and say it was no big deal. He didn't. Obama chose to lie to the American people and say that no meeting took place. Can't Obama answer any questions? This is the primary and questions are sort of good for finding out what people have done and why they lied about meetings. Obama's behvior now calls into question other statements he has made. What else has been disengenuous about? What other lies has told?

Sen. Obama was bound to have a bad press period. So here it is. Time to regroup and give the fight back. So scorched earth is the mode, then that shall be our fight.

But, as her supporter Krugman said, she can fight dirtier than anybody. And consider her fake news report on Ohio radio, repeating false claims about Obama and NAFTA.
One might look at a vast right wing conspiracy there, too. (A right wing government "leaks" a memo written by one of its own people making a false assertion. The Canadian Embassy backs Obama's denial. They they say it was from Chicago, but nothing there supports the memo. Even the Canadian Parliament got riled by this dirty pool.)

Bulletin!!
Neocons everywhere unite! The people must be given some more BS (on the eve of the voting so it will have effect before it is refuted). They might be getting wise to us. And they like this Obama fellow who refuses to be bought. (His support comes from perople and not the beloved special interests. Let's shoot him down!)

What Penn is saying is that he is functioning as the ad agency for the Clinton Campaign, not the head of the campaign, or even the head of marketing.

That is perfectly consistent with the way ad agencies work. They create and execute and implement the message for a client, as in choosing, buying, and placing the media.

But the ad agency has no authority of its client's budget or any administrative control over the client company. Which Hillary's campaign is analogous to.

All that said, the rule of life and politics is never complain, never explain. Penn ought to know this, but he broke both rules. Stupid. And it will cost him business in the future. Political and otherwise at his P.R. firm, a big one, I believe Burston Marsteller.
