John McCain went back to the future last night suggesting that an old anti-drug program should be revived to stem demand for illegal drugs.

"We're creating a demand here in the United States. We all know that," McCain said at a town hall meeting in Waco.

"Now maybe we ought to go back to - remember when Nancy Reagan used to have a program called 'Just Say No' and it had some effect?"

Nancy Reagan received $3,000,000 of tax payer money for her "Just Say No" program. She is on record as spending $100,000 of it. The rest of it ended up in her bank account.
I suppose from a Republican standpoint this was a successful program.
Drugs were completely legal, freely and cheaply available for all of human history until about a century ago. Since Drug Prohibition was instituted the problems with drugs have increased at an accelerated pace with every year.
The "War On Some Drugs " is the greatest failure in US domestic policy, and one of the most failed policies in human history.
Only terrorists, violent drug dealers, corrupt politicians, police and customs agents and self righteous moralists and those who are ignorant of the actual effects of drugs could support this failure.
I will bet anything that when Drug prohibition is lifted the murder rate will drop 50% in 2 years.
For a safer, saner, richer and more peaceful world end Drug prohibition now.

Just Say No "had some effect?"

Sure John, but I don't think you're talking about the effect of making us all laugh, at how naive the First Lady can be, in America.

Just Say No was a joke, and is still a joke.

"During the 80's and the beloved Reagan presidency, the very few people who were doing illegal drugs in America were restricted to hippies/democrats and other America haters."

Ummm....wasn't there a huge crack cocaine epidemic in the 80's?

"wasn't there a huge crack cocaine epidemic in the 80's?"

Yeah, but that was a CIA black ops operation that funded the contras and the mujahadeen in Afghanistan to fight the Russkies, so we just pretend that didn't exist -- except as a rationale to put a bunch of people of color in prison, while us white folks on Wall Street snorted ourselves silly into the economic growth and prosperity that was the Reagan Revolution.

So, shhhhhhhhhhh..... don't tell anybody, its national security, you know.

Now you know, McCain is living in the past. Senility does that to one.

The Clintons want to take us back to the nineties

McCain wants to take us back to the glory days of the eighties and the Reagans.

Let's all move forward, bravely, into 2009. Does anyone want to do that?

I think we should just say no to "Just say no". Our increasingly costly prisons are overflowing with prisoners, and some sixty percent of those prisoners are doing time for some sort of drug related offense. We really need some NEW thinking in this area (not to mention others) because the current bullshit is NOT working.

I'm a registered Republican and I really want out of the G.O.P. They give us a war-hungry nut, McCain, who wants to rev up ALL the wars, including the "War on Drugs". He should have no trouble with that, as the Mob loves that tax-free monopoly, the prison "industry" gets more cells, the Narcs get more narc money, the pols have a sure-fire mob vote, the whiskey industry keeps its competition at bay.... Hey! who's against that "War"? -- only two names that I know of, William F. Buckley, and Ron Paul. Buckley is dead and Paul, according to the media, is near death. So, on with the War! Baaa-baaa....

It must be the apocolypse...I'm in total agreement with a Republican. I grew up in the 80s and under the "Just Say No" program which educated me all about all the drugs and what they would do for me! I like to call it the "Just Say Now" program. Rock on, Stirner!

Yeah, that's cute. Let's just go back to an 80's slogan and keep the prisons full. This guy is full of answers.

GREAT!!

There is an other thing the Repubs. are doing to wipe up terror, it's playing the EMERGENCY BROADCAST ALERT every week or sometimes twice a week. Anybody noticed?

John Sydney McCain: you are a dumb ass and a moron. I suppose you would encourage the continuance of abstinence programs (sex ed) as well.

Get thee to a retirement home, you fuck wad.

Oh, YEAH! Thats really what we need; More "head in the sand" idiocy, more otherwise innocent people in jail, families torn apart, no markets for our farmers who cannot legally grow industrial hemp, and more $BILLIONS wasted on a continuation of the failed BS "war on drugs"! Now There's real policy integrity and leadership!
