Meredith Vieira: I Wasn't Sure Jane Fonda Said "C*nt"

About 10 minutes after Jane Fonda said "cunt" on "Today," Meredith Vieira apologized to viewers for the slip-up. "It was a slip and obviously she apologizes and so do we," Vieira said. "We would do nothing to offend the audience, so please accept that apology."

But in a blog post on NBC's iVillage.com, reported by the New York Post, Vieira admits that at first she was unsure whether Fonda actually used the vulgar slang word:

When Jane said that word during the interview her head was turned slightly away from me and I wasn't sure I had heard her correctly. I didn't want to stop the interview and ask, "What did you say?" because if she had said the word I didn't want her to repeat it, and if she hadn't, I didn't want to confuse the audience. But when the interview was over one of the producers spoke into my earpiece and asked me, "Did she say what I think she said?", at which point I looked over at the floor director and he gave me a glance that told me she sure had. I know it was an honest mistake on her part, but we certainly owed the audience an apology.

They apologize for a guest using a synonym for the title of the play but they don't apologize for everything that all of the politicians say or for ignoring the worthy candidates.

Je pense, donc je suis populiste.

Let me make sure I understand this. The Today Show brings on two women to discuss a play called "The Vagina Monologues," one that has been available in published form for years, and is shocked- SHOCKED- that a euphemism for the word "vagina" slipped out? Who's kidding whom, here? If they were that worried, they should have installed a five-second delay. Can you say, "Manufactured Controversey," kids? I knew you could.
Did anyone even call the FCC to complain? Or is it possible television viewers are more mature than television-makers?

That word makes me have a slip of the tongue as well; it's understandable.

If the word as a verb or noun is used as an obscenity then yes it should'nt be allowed on the public airways. But if the word is relevant to the context of what is being said, then everyone should just chill out. Language, as we have come to know is as much a part of social politics as anything else and someone trying to rehabilitate a word shouldn't be accused of using vulgar language. Let's stop being junvenile about this and let's GROW UP!!!
