Study: Press Looking Harder At Obama Post-SNL

NEW YORK — Life imitating art or just a coincidence? A study of campaign coverage found the media took a sharper look at Barack Obama the week after "Saturday Night Live" spoofed journalists enthralled by his candidacy.

The NBC comedy show on Feb. 23 opened with a mock debate where journalists were rough on Hillary Clinton while being starry-eyed about Obama. It matched complaints the Clinton campaign had made _ and she even referenced the comedy skit during a real debate last week.

During the week, Obama was the dominant person in 69 percent of presidential campaign stories, according to a study by Project for Excellence in Journalism. That's the biggest percentage one candidate had received in any week this year.

Many of the stories took a tough look at Obama, such as a Feb. 25 ABC "World News" study on his Illinois legislative record and a "CBS Evening News" report on his career three nights later.

It's hard to say whether "SNL" acted as a de-facto assignment editor, since some of the stories were probably being prepared before the NBC show aired, but it did seem to crystallize a thought that had been percolating, said Mark Jurkowitz, the project's associate director.

"There were a lot of factors at play," Jurkowitz said. "But there's no question the skit, if nothing else, was perfectly timed."

With no primaries last week, news outlets had the time to look at other stories, as well as the time to look at their own performance. The Washington Post, New York Times and ABC's "Good Morning America" all ran stories addressing whether the media has been fairly covering the Obama-Clinton contest.

"Saturday Night Live" this past weekend opened its show with another fake debate where journalists played easy for Obama. This time, the skit ended with an appearance by Clinton herself.

The project studies 48 different media outlets, including newspapers, Web sites and television networks, as part of its examination of campaign coverage.

Saturday Nite Live...DIES.......

In an attempt to throw the March 4 Elections to Senator Clinton, NBCs' long running Saturday Night Live crafted a well orchestrated 10 minute skit with a 5 minute Live follow-up by Clinton. The skit included a sympathy piece that was a continuation of Senator Clintons cry that the Media is biased against her. Then in a sign of solidarity or what might be called "Girl Power", The actress who played Senator Clinton in the skit joined her In a segment to compliment each other on Clothing then Clinton Opened the show with "Live from New York" handle.

The producers of the show obviously were taking full advantage of Senator Clintons recent rants about the show In the Democratic Debate aired last week.
The show has been dying for the last 3 seasons due to of subpar writing and competiton with shows on Comedy Central and Fox. This will surely put the show on it's final path towards retirement. Senator Clinton was spoke directly to the people in Ohio, Texas, Vermont and Rhode Island in her message. When there is a bias in the media that is obvious.... as this was, it is hard for the Network to deny that it was scripted to influence the March 4th primaries and attempting to give unfair advantage to one candidate over the other.

Saturday Nite Live Died........

Really, there was nothing brilliant about either of the pro-Hillary skits SNL has done over the last two weeks. They weren't insightful or funny.

The only irony about the skits was the fact that SNL fawned over Hillary the EXACT way they accused the media of doing for Obama. Hypocrites.

Task,. tsk, tsk, somebody's sore. How about the 69 percent of the time Obama got good press coverage? Hillary's been piled on for months by the media.
Besides, SNL is not that powerful. So, take it easy. People are coming out of the fairy dust effect and thinking hard about who's the most qualified to be president. It's as simple as that.

For years SNL made fun of the Clintons in some very negative skits, so I supposed you liked them then.

I'm amazed at the power this show still wields at pointing out the social injustices that exist in a comedic format.

They bitch slapped the stinking MSM real good. They deserved it for beating up on a woman.

MSNBC still hasn't got the hint. They're right back at it again tonight putting up their human shield around Obama as Hillary wins Rhode Island, then Ohio, then Texas.

With the popularity of this primary, SNL's ratings will soar once again. Watch and see!

Why is it that some feminists want total equality when it comes to positive benefits, yet when it comes to negative criticism it's "beating up on a woman"?

Equality is equality, and Hillary Clinton is not immune from legitimate criticism.

I've had to give up MSNBC. Countdown used to be "appointment television" for me, and I miss it. But I could not stomach Olbermann's blantant fawning over Prince Obama. And this has nothing to DO with anything the Clinton camp has been "whining" about, I decided this back when they were concentrating on pushing Edwards out of the game.

If you go try to read The News Hole (Countdown Blog) the bamabots infesting the place are still high-fiving themselves over their perception that that SNL sketch skewered Hillary, not their superboys.

Chris Matthews and Tim Russert are even worse.

Worse than Fox by a long shot.

The only problem with your little theory is that Lorne Michaels is an Obama supporter. And that there was a little sketch a few months ago with Obama (the real one) and a Hillary Clinton that everybody mistook for a witch.
It's called comedy- it goes after the easy targets, and it doesn't worry about whether "thatwasntfunny" supports them or not.

There is NOTHING left to say against her (although I know how much you guys love repeating the golden oldies). Btw...let's put things in perspective, here's how little there is left to throw at her...Limbaugh was reduced to attacking her looks(!)

I did not know that watching TV, or not, was on the list of rights that we have. It's a choice, but I don't see where it should be elevated to rights status.

In any event, I assume you must stay glued to MSNBC and all the pro Obama shows [you know, the ones disguised as fair and balanced news shows.]

Looks like they will split winning the 4 states. Now which way will the media go. Obama still will be ahead. Will the media start digging into Hillary's current background the way they have Obamas. She keeps saying she's been vetted. Wasn't that more than 10 years ago. How have the Clintons made all this money since leaving the WH? Is the media to afraid of the Clinton machine to find out. It's ashame that only Obama has the cuts to go up against the clintons.

Bill Clinton is a private citizen. Do you care what other private citizens make? Is it any of your business?
Hillary, as long as she isn't taking bribes, can also make money too...there isn't a law against making money in this country, not yet...

BTW: Obama ain't exactly a pauper, either...does anyone begrudge how he has made his money?

Hillary won three and Obama won one.You are in for a big shock along with a lot of Obama supporters. Rezko went on trial yesterday and he is on his way to prison. If you were going to prison would you testify against the politicians you were bribing to get a reduced sentence. Obama is dead meat as soon as he is called as a witness since he will probably have to purger himself in an attempt to avoid prison.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:21 AM on 03/05/2008

People, get real. SNL was funny the past few weeks but there are structural reasons why obama is now getting more press attention, some of it negative. He is the frontrunner now, and secondly the rezko trial in chicago, which was scheduled many months ago, began this week. many articles examining obama's relationship with rezko ran to coincide with the start of that trial. if the trial had been delayed for some reason, the "negative" coverage would have been delayed, and the SNL effect would not have been alleged. THINK.

It is not just that - it is also the Canadian issue, his continual "copy cat" approach of HRC to everything he does, missing files for his 8 year term in IL Senate, lack of work in the short term he has been in the Senate ... the list goes on and on ... and it will only get longer!

Journalists must really be in a bubble world if it takes a SNL ( a mere shadow of its former self) parody as social commentary.
I can't figure out if they have have whipped themselves into a frenzy over the Obama phenomenon, OR have partially created a frenzy over Obama, which has become a phenomenon.
I am still trying to understand who Mr. Obama is, what he says he will do for us, and whether or not he has what it takes to deliver. Mrs. Clinton is a known entity and explains her plans clearly. Unfortunately, I believe I am familiar with the delivery system she will use, and I don't much like it.

The idea that the Clintons' republican concocted personal investigations need to be revisited after all these years is laughable. We already went down that road years ago and it yielded very little. The only fair game for media scrutiny should be current events, or, the discovery of dated yet relevant information that was never vetted and which makes a poignant statement about a candidates ethical and moral compass. Certainly the Rezco affair qualifies for careful review because the land deal in 2005 involved Obama and Rezco buying a 2 million dollar plot and house , adjoining one another, on the same day and from the same source. The fair question has to do with Obama's admitted "poor judgment" (one of his alleged attributes) as well as any possible political impropriety in the form of mutual favor. The other area of concern is certainly just what his economic adviser was saying to the Canadian official about Obama's NAFTA stance. Matters like his middle name, his cultural heritage, his wife's patriotism and his religious affiliation are all red herrings which have been effectively used by Obama himself to take the focus away from the more significant issues.

There is a 17 million dollar fraud lawsuit against Bill and Hillary Clinton in CA http://worldnetdaily.com/index.php?fa=PAGE.view&pageId=57009

That's a big difference from being a friend with Rezco when he had a good reputation. According to a reporter at the Chicago Tribune Rezco had a good reputation for years up to 2004 and because Barack didn't cut him off quick enough, the press is trying to create something that doesn't exist. Senator Obama is not a part of the trial against Rezco, but Bill and Hillary Clinton are the defendents in a 17 million dollar fraud suit. Can anyone say power builds up with years in the White House. It helps to know the owners of the networks, doesn't Bill and Hillary?

How DARE they make fun of him!

And since when has SNL not made fun of politicians?

Remember the hilarious portrayal of Papa Bush by Dana Carvey?
Terry Sweeney as Nancy Reagan?
Chevy Chase as Ford?
and so on...

If Obama's fans are so thin skinned that they can't laugh at him, then they are a sorry lot...

The Dana Carvey inpersonaton of Bush 1 was so hilarous. I taped it and watch it once in awhile and it is just as funny every time. I miss Dana Carvey on SNL. It's not really that funny anymore. I missed the Obama skit.
For years SNL made fun of the Clinton's when Bill was President, I didn't hear complaints then and these skits were not flattering.

With news media deciding winners in advance and shaping coverage to ensure this foregone conclusion - until comedy shows humiliate them into pretending they really are legitimate, unbiased news reporters, Fred Friendly must be rolling in his grave. The rest of us aren't happy about it either.

The media knew for a long time that they were part of the Hate Hilllary/Love Obama Club and were hoping nobody would bring it up. They must have done some polling recently and found that the public has internalized that the media is unfair. Suddenly their reputation was very much in the tank with FOX news. With the prospect of a Democratic congress with lots of clout could pass some laws about the use of the public airwaves they were staring at having their licenses yanked. Nothing like the prospect of being cutting them off at the pockets to gain their attention.
