Democratic Nominee: What Is In Store For Barack Obama And Hillary Clinton After Tuesday's Primaries

Pro-Clinton 527 Prepares For Pennsylvania Air War:

A new pro-Hillary Clinton group spent $830,000 airing ads Texas and Ohio in the run-up to her victory in the March 4 primaries. And the group has at least $300,000 in the bank to launch an expected air war on her behalf in Pennsylvania.

American Leadership Project raised a total of $1.2 million - $1 million of which came from AFSCME, which has endorsed Clinton - since Feb. 21, according to a report it filed Wednesday with the Federal Election Commission.

The group, run by longtime Clinton allies, is registered only under section 527 of the IRS code, not as a political committee with the FEC. That allows it to raise the huge contributions barred by federal law, but also bars it from explicitly urging a vote for or against Clinton, a New York senator, or her opponent in the Democratic presidential primary, Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.

Nancy Pelosi Is Confident Democrats Will Have A Nominee Before The Convention:

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said Wednesday now is not the time for superdelegates to wade into the fight over the Democratic presidential nomination. "I think the electoral process has to work its way," the California Democrat told reporters. "There are still many voters unheard from yet, and I think that our candidates both have the capacity to inspire, to bring out a big vote that will hold us in good stead in November, and I think that now is not the time for anybody to weigh in."

Pelosi said she was confident the nominee would be decided before the Democratic convention in August, and that she was "never among those who believed this would be resolved by now."

Hillary Hints At Sharing Ticket With Obama:

Hillary Rodham Clinton, fresh off big primary victories, hinted Wednesday at the possibility of sharing the Democratic presidential ticket with Barack Obama -- with her at the top. Obama played down his losses, stressing that he still holds the lead in number of delegates.

In a night that failed to clarify the Democratic race, John McCain clinched the Republican nomination. Clinton won primaries in Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island, halting Obama's winning streak. Obama won in Vermont.

Watch the video from CBS:

Obama Responds To Shared-Ticket Hint:
"We are just focused on winning the nomination. That is my focus. I respect Sen. Clinton. She has been a tenacious opponent. It is premature to talk about a joint ticket."

Clinton To Have Hard Time Overcoming Obama's Delegate Lead:

"Tonight we won three out of four contests and began a new chapter in this historical campaign," the victorious Clinton told reporters on her campaign plane.

But even if she wins every contest left, Clinton still would have a hard time overcoming Barack Obama's pledged delegate lead. In fact, her task got even harder because even though she won Texas, Ohio and Rhode Island Tuesday night, she didn't do much to close the delegate gap -- and with every contest that passes, the number up for grabs drops.

Obama Focuses On The Math:

Obama focused on the math while addressing supporters in Texas. "We have nearly the same delegate lead as we did this morning and we are on our way to winning this nomination," he said.

Clinton's best hope is to try to rack up big margins in the spring contests. Even her own advisers acknowledge Obama will probably win the two other states left this month -- Wyoming on Saturday and Mississippi next Tuesday. If she is able to continue turning voters against Obama in the races after that, she could plausibly clinch the nomination by persuading superdelegates to back her.

Read HuffPost's OffTheBus Superdelegate Investigation to find out more about the superdelegates who are likely to decide the Democratic nomination for president.

Remember when Hillary talks about Obama as V.P it is all politics. Rhetoric. And she may be serious
too. However for now it is more words that will be exchanged back and forth. Last night she won and therefore it gave her a chance to continue the fight further. In the end I would hope that the powerful
democrats in the party would see to it that there is a dream ticket. If Hillary is nominated let Obama be the V.P and vice versa. As for Florida and Michigan they are important states and they better have
a duel there - let the democratic party work that out. So that Obama and Hillary fight for votes there.

VOTE DEMOCRAT. That's all that matters in the end. If you don't, don't complain about the Republican administration. Don't complain about the rights that will continue to be taken away, the torture that will continue, the war that wil continue, abortion becoming illegal..

When all is said and done you will either have a democrat or a republican in the white house. You need to ask yourself which group you can put up with for another bunch of years? It's not just the one person you decide on. You are deciding all the folks they bring with them. ALL OF THEM.

After all her bad campaign behavior she is not worthy of any elected office period! How dare she say she wants to run with Obama considering how she belittled him and reduced his whole life to a speech. She is destroying the party, let's get rid of her quick!
I'm also not trusting the wisdom of Nancy Pelosi. Is she a leader?

You mean Nancy "Impeachment is off the table" Pelosi? She has TOTALLY betrayed the people who voted to put the Dems back in power in 2006.... who mainly did so assuming the Dems would go after Bush & Co!

There are several people I'd be ok with Obama choosing as a VP. But there's only one person who I'd be ok with having Obama as the VP rather than president. I think this would settle a lot of the arguments going on (except with the hardcore Clinton backers), and would be just as much of a "dream ticket": Al Gore & Barack Obama.

Here's something that I've never heard mentioned on MSM:

Obama has won 26 states; 23 of them by double-digits.
Clinton has won 13 states; 7 of them by double-digits.
Obama's average winning margin, for ALL states won is 29%.
Clinton's average winning margin, for ALL states won is 10.5%.

Add to this the delegate count and the popular vote count....

..... can someone explain to me how the Clinton people think SHE should be the nominee?

Barack Hussein has won in areas which do not matter to the Dems in the General and he has not won one big State except his own of IL

Hillary has won registered Dems and the Party's Base. All Fluffy has managed are the left-wing-loonies who are politically clueless, the very young, who are, well, just clueless! No wonder the clueless go around floating high on the Hussein Helium!

Real America, Real Dems are voting for the REAL candidate: Hillary!!!

That makes as much sense as a Huckabee-McCain ticket. Anyway, I won't vote for any ticket that Hillary is on, top or bottom. I want the Clintons gone from Washington for good. I voted twice for Obama yesterday and plan to do so again soon ... but I will never again vote for a Clinton.

Oh my god. Just now they said Clinton is saying "Seat these delegates", referring to Michigan and Florida. Ok, just about everyone's name was on the Florida ballot, so that's not a huge stretch. But Michigan?! In Michigan, it was Clinton and "uncommitted" . . . that's it. So of COURSE Clinton wants those delegates seated! Is she for real?

In Michigan it was Clinton, Dodd, Gravel, Kucinich, and Uncommitted. Biden,Obama, and Edwards were originally on the ballot but had their names removed as a pander to Iowa voters who resented any attempt by another state to move up. They gambled and lost. Everyone with any sense knows that both Florida and Michigan have to be seated or the GE will suffer. How this happens is TBD but it will happen.

Nice try Hillary. How, exactly, do you come off thinking it's YOU that would be at the top of a joint ticket? He's gonna have more votes, more delegates, and more states than you. So any joint ticket would have HIM on top . . . of course hopefully he won't choose you.

Holy Cow! What venom!

Is it possible that the most ardent haters among you just MIGHT be playing into the wet dreams of the Republicans? Naaaah!

Think about this -- without injecting your vilification filters: for either of these two candidates to win the nomination would present a far different choice than the Republicans have just locked into (let me finish before going over the top). For either candidate to then agree to be the others' Vice Presidential candidate would not only be an honor, not only would cue them up for 2016, but would present a unification that would make an astonishing ticket for November.

Think about the debate in Los Angeles, when Wolf Blitzer injected: "The more I speak to Democrats out there -- not only the Democrats here at the Kodak Theatre, but all over the country -- they take a look at the two of you and they see potentially a dream ticket. A dream ticket for the White House."

Remember the response? No "applause" signs flashing, just pure spontaneity. Sustained applause. Twenty seconds.

Either candidate, when victorious, would be foolhardy in the extreme to ignore that spontaneity, that outpouring of hope - so get over your respective sniping already! Work as hard as you can for your candidate -- and may that person win. May that person have the foresight to ask the other to join their ticket, and may the other have the foresight and grace to accept the opportunity to help change the abyssmal course this country has been taken the last 7+ years.

Remember 2000. Remember that McCain has all but been in lockstep with GWB on the worst of issues -- the war (including walking away from the torture debate in the latest round), on privatization of Social Security, on appointing judges based on "Original Intent" (bellwether language for anti-Roe v. Wade), on the Schiavo debacle (and thus privacy as a whole). And remember that if you do not vote, your apathy (or worse, your vote for the opposition candidate) could put that kind of thinking back in the White House.

Look at the goal. Everything you do today and tomorrow -- including your rhetoric -- should bring us all closer to that goal. Everything else is noise. Turn off the noise.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:01 PM on 03/05/2008

Problem with your analysis, DrBuzz, is that there is very little difference between Hillary and McCain. When the voters can choose between McCain-lite and the real thing, why would they vote for her? If Clinton is the nominee, McCain wins. And, she would prefer that single-term look-alike to an 8-yr run of President Obama. She will be too old to run after that.

Shillary may throw progressive a few bones, but at great cost. Like Slick Willy, Shillary will engage in scandals, lies, corruption, and machiavellian politics. This will ultimately hurt the democratic party and the progressive movement, just like Slick Willy in the 90s. So, I wont vote for Shillary precisely because I do keep my eye on the goal as they say.

Wow! The posts today on this topic are especially vitriolic toward Clinton, which is saying a lot. Clinton allowed the Clinton/Obama ticket idea to float because it would offer a solution to super-delegates at the convention which might be acceptable to followers of both candidates, therefore offers political cover for people like Kerry and Kennedy. Since ordering the ticket with the less experienced Obama as VP makes perfect sense, by definition it can't be too appealing to Obamites on this website, but Clinton has a lot harder hide than Obama's progressive loyalists and would not allow a little internecine acrimony to shoot down a winning ticket for the Democrats. When push comes to shove, the convention will have to deal with this possibility as a way to go forward. Knowing that it would be likely both to win and to provide another President in 2016 is a powerful inducement for compromise.

My definition of perfect sense is that course of action which achieves the desired goal of winning the 2008 election and offering the best chance of winning again in 2016, and along the way electing both the first woman and the first African-American President. I guess I'm taking the longer view.

And for HRC, Exposure = 100% republicasn and 50% of democrats dislike and distrust her.

Since Obama is the candidate backed and supported logistically by Karl Rove and the neoconservatives in these primaries, rather than McCain, it would be odd for Clinton to pick him as her VP if she wins. Republicans have been organized in droves by the G.O.P. and Obama's campaign to crossover and vote for him in the primaries, using the pitch that this is how these folks can get rid of Clinton before November (when most of them will cross back and vote for McCain). Obama's direct mail hit piece on Clinton's universal health care program came directly out of Rove's 1990s campaign against her, which as you may recall, made her really angry. Obama now also has the albatross of NAFTA-gate and the Rezko friendship around his neck - certainly grist for Rove as soon as the time comes to turn on his trojan horse. The Times of London also reported Sunday that Obama is considering Republicans for cabinet positions in his admin., if elected, especially Chuck Nagel as Sec. of Defense. For these reasons and others, it's not likely that a New Deal F.D.R. Democrat like Clinton is going to support an ally of the conservative cause, which, speeches aside, Obama has revealed himself to be. For more on the G.O.P.'s role in manipulating the Democratic primaries, see the article I've posted at thecityedition.com Here's a direct link:

It does seem ideologically unlikely that she would pick Obama, for exactly the reasons you state. He certainly is the preferred candidate of the GOP and they would love to have him in the top spot. She does, however, have all of these newborn politcos who have found religion in Obama so picking him would give her a little insurance. It depends on whether she wants to be ideologically pristine or if she wants to actually win. If I were her, I'd just put him on the ticket and go with it. He would be great arm candy internationally and he would be primed and ready next time around.

Exactly. Progressives like to think of themselves as visionaries, so visualize this. The election is over, Hillary is President, Barack is Vice President, and everything is in place for the Dems to hold the presidency for the next 16 years. How many Supreme Court appointments does that cover? America reaps the benefit of both a woman and African-American in office, with both barriers shattered forever. Dems controlling the Presidency also control both houses of Congress, so stuff like universal health actually gets done. Now reverse the order and visualize an inexperienced President Obama struggling Carter-like to achieve anything substantive, and the GOP retaking the Congress after 2 or 4 years. Meanwhile, Hillary is out of the picture and the gender barrier remains. Alternately, John McCain wins in 2008 and all is lost. Give some credence to these scenarios, because one of them is likely to occur.it

This is a joke right. As I stood in line to vote in Texas, more than a third of the people waiting to vote with me in the democratic primary were republicans. You may recall, the Limbaugh endorsement came during the time that Obama was coming under more intense scrutiny by the press. It could have been used as a cover for the Rove plan, or possibly as a tactical maneuver to use against Clinton down the road - i.e that conservatives prefer her to Obama, so Democrats should prefer Obama to Clinton. Remember, McCain went home to Arizona the weekend before the primary, essentially ceding votes for the crossover campaign, so something was going on here. It's also possible that the original plan to support Obama unraveled as Republicans decided (after seeing the 3 a.m. ad) that they really didn't mind the idea of a Clinton presidency, Rove's "high negatives" smear campaign aside. We can only speculate, but with something as important with a VP nomination, it needs to be looked at.

She's not winning either, why would she suggest this.

While I don't recall her quote exactly what she said wasn't at all presumptuous. She was asked by someone if she would ask Obama to be the VP and she said something along the lines that it could come to that but that they don't even know who is going to be at the top of the ticket.

I support Obama, loathe Clinton, but it's an example where decisions are made, opinions decided, and stones being thrown by only reading headlines and not finding out the information ourselves.

I mean who ever knew that someone could change the momentum of a race by essentially saying "He's Just Like Me" and that actually be a negative campaign?
